WVKO 1580 amazing

Think of it as a restaurant. If you open the doors before you are able to prepare and serve the food to your customers, then the customers will no longer visit your restaurant. It doesn't matter when you finally get the food and service right, because the customers will have already chosen another restaurant to eat at. A radio station is not unlike a restaurant in that the more people that come in the front door to dine (Cume), you want to do all you can to provide a positive experience so that they return often (TSL). A restaurant would never open before they were ready to provide good service and good food, and neither should a radio station.

I hope you get your food right soon and people still come to your restaurant. Good luck!

I am right now (12:55am on 2/18) listening to WVKO---the message containing a whining dial tone followed by the Dial Global satellite info is playing on a loop.

Waking up (7am on 2/18)...flip on the radio...WVKO still airing the 'Dial Global' loop...I have to admit I love listening to WVKO...but unfortunately, not always for the right reasons...

You know those DG recvs are programmed remotely [DG Sends auth codes for whatever programming you have 'contracted' to carry]... I don't see how they have messed this up so bad.. I understand the shoe string budget, one man operation etc... I have compassion for them on that.. however how hard is it to contact the syndicator and have your ducks in order for airing programming?

"This is Dial Global Radio Networks AMC8 Transponder 13 ... "

Compelling programming!

That loop started about 12:07 AM when I was listening for the 12:07 AM start of The Leslie Marshall Show. That loop went till
about 8:00 AM. I didn't want to put up with that 'Dial Global' loop all night long so I tuned to WVKO-AM's competition, WTVN because I couldn't stand it any more.

Also, noticed that 'Dial Global' loop last Tuesday evening from 3:00 PM till 3:15 PM at which time they joined the regularly scheduled program in progress at 3:15 PM.

The WVKO-AM station manager said on the air today they are still working on the glitches in their new automation system.
How much longer will we have to wait?

5:30pm on 2/18...apparently WVKO is now airing all80s.com....I like it....but hey, the 'wheel of formats' continues...

Yeh this morning they went from "DG Loop" to "Columbus Jazz Radio" (I am guessing it was around 7:30am when they switched to Columbus Jazz -- likely when Mike got up to head in to produce Radio Outlook) .. then sometime after 8am they did locally run music with Mike until the Radio Outlook people showed up ... tonight it seems like they are back to a wheel of formats as you said with "All 80s" .. Guess it beats the "DG unauthorized loop"

Hearing a "Mens health type talk show" tonight... I have to say the cues have been decent -- very little overlap, dead air etc.. Glad to see their working to get this ship on the right track!

For what it's worth, I'm not in Ohio anymore to listen to WVKO, but have some ideas. No doubt, being distracted from programming their computer playlists to correctly switch sources is something that shouldn't be a trial and error process on the air - without someone to monitor the signal, or an alarm system to alert the programmer/engineer/manager when something is off.

However, some years ago in Ohio, when unattended automation was still in its adolescence, I worked at a station where the contracted chief engineer quit, shortly after some staff who were his buddies had quit, in a scheme to drive out management and find a way to work unsupervised, if they could manipulate themsleves back into their old jobs (none ever was allowed to return to the payroll). That engineer had rigged up remote access to the station's automation system from his home computer, and switched programming on the air during a prime weekend hour when the station was unattended. Being short staffed, and distracted by some other stunts that made it hard for everyone to work, he got away with a few other programming switches before IT help boosted the firewall. This "joker" had also made the production room computer cursor move around a few times prior to that, while I was recording breaks, shortly after he said he didn't want to work there anymore. Juvenile, to say the least. Fortunately, I don't think he's working for any stations anymore.

Point is, perhaps some of these program errors on WVKO could be attributed to a hacker - someone who doesn't want to station to ever succeed, for political or personal reasons, and knows how vulnerable it is with minimal staffing. With morning drive programming errors like this, he really need to get someone from another station to help him set up a secure system, with safeguards for playlist mistakes. Expect some heavy duty dirty tricks during this election year, WVKO. So make sure your computers are set up correctly by a professional. And monitor your air signal.

I don't think there is any conspiracy here against Progressive Talk.. This is a matter of not being prepared to launch the format when they did and learning on the fly (how to set up automation, deal with satellite feeds.. etc..) no one is trying to stop lib talk from being on air.

Agreed...

Although it's a cute story, there are so many other things a pissed off engineer could do, versus playing with some automation.

I also have a hard time thinking is is conspiracy, I just think they folks are slowly learning as they go forward. Computer hacking is a new thing, the older automation systems had very little, if any outside access, and it would have been really easy to see and block any intrusion...not to mention the federal stuff on tampering with a broadcast station.

If you've never done it before, setting up automation systems and satellite isn't that intuitive, but after you've done it once, it's easy, especially with some if the newer computer automation, and even the free stuff.

If I could give them advice, I'd say, lose the egos, and get a little help from some of the broadcasters on this forum, rather than alienating them!

Sean Gilbow was doing news this morning on WVKO-AM .... I suppose he was doing fill in work this morning because he is on holiday from his day job at the Ohio DMV. This was a surprise because he told me he had a falling out with Gary Richards when I saw him last Summer at Comfest.
It appears they made up but GR can also use all the help he can get at this point.

[EDIT*-TOS violation for thread disruption]

WVKO-AM had no local news, weather or traffic reports this morning. I wonder if WVKO-AM
would consider hiring back Ron Bryant, the former local Radio News Anchor with WVKO-AM?
I for one have to switch over to WTVN for this information when Gary Richards of WVKO-AM said the station would have "lot of news" in the Columbus Dispatch.

This just goes to prove, you can't run a radio station with just one person.. When that person
is sick or off, the whole station suffers and so do it's listeners. To quote The Ohio Media Watch,
this station is run well below shoestring and it's beginning to sound like it to me.

He ought to start running the fm signal and put Gospel music music on that frequency. He would probably get the listeners radio one lost when they took Joy 106.3 off to put magic there so 98.9 could be come jack. He could have 2 stations 1 for gospel, 1 for progressive talk.

Noticed they are doing some local news in the morning and afternoon drive today. Not sure how long this(local newscasts) will last but this is progress over at WVKO 1580.

Charles Traylor of "Front Street" mentioned his show will back on WVKO-AM as of Sunday June 3,
from 3-4 PM. He announced this as a guest of the "Fight Back" show last Sunday. This
will be a weekly show. Why don't they make this a daily show? WVKO-AM has no local
shows on the weekday.

He remembers the day when the WVKO-AM bankruptcy trustee abruptly silenced WVKO-AM
on May 6, 2006. This is "a date which will live in infamy" he said because that is the date the
"Voice of the people was silenced when WVKO-AM went off the air". His "Front Street" was
the "Voice of the People" as far as he is concerned.
More on when the station went off the air in 2006 is here:

Thanks to Gary Richards for bring 'balance' back to Columbus radio, as Mr. Traylor put it.
This is a nice talk show. I used to listen to on WVKO-AM. It's been ofs the air for six years
now but that will change in two weeks time.

Now, I hope WVKO-AM brings back his co-host to "Front Street":
