The station claims it's not making enough money with oldies/brokered programming, so starting tomorrow, they will become "NBC Sports Radio 92.1 Philadelphia."

Coincidentally, NBC Sports Radio goes 24/7 tomorrow, with new shows including an afternoon drive program, "Under Center," which is co-hosted by former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Eytan Shander (formerly of WIP and WPEN) also co-hosts NBCSR's late evening show.

One of the last real radio stations around becomes a computer in a closet attached to a dish at one end and a stick at the other. Sad.
 
Damn...yet another sports station? How many do we need? Where is the audience coming from? Let's see..in Philly WIP,WIP-FM,WPEN-FM,WFAN out of New York comes in very well..and I'm sure there are others.

Sorry to see WVLT go...as the commercial AM FM band gets worse by the day.

Maybe it's an April Fools joke? Don't think so.

I agree with you wholeheartedly!

The market is saturated with sports format stations. WSNJ-AM 1240 is also getting in the sports games but they are smart about it as they are going to broadcast California Angels games. As you know Mike Trout is a former Millville High School player. With that said there is relevant applicability to broadcasting these MLB games.

On the other hand, we have far too many sports talk stations. They are getting in the game too late.

I wonder how Carl Hemple is taking this.

The pastors that broadcast on WVLT can find a home on LIFT FM and I guess the secular brokered time personalities will go to WNJC-AM or WSNJ-AM.
 
I don't believe this for a second. Brokered programming is one of the easiest ways to make money these days plus Blavat pays a small fortune everyday to be on the air there. The article on courier post doesn't load and I just did a search on that site and others and there is nothing about a format change. Long live Blavat, Costello, Jimmy Dee, DePre, Dennis, Carr, Skip and the others!
 
John Holcomb II, Before they change their format to sports, I think they should consider oldies that aren't quite so old. The truth is this may be just an April Fool's joke from the original poster. ::)

I believe the pie is big enough that WVLT would be more successful if they chose newer oldies(oxymoron :)).

Problem is WVLT's current music format is losing too many people to the grave.
 
I guess better than the average format-flipping April 1 post on this board because it has a link to an article...clever, until you try it & get a message the link doesn't work & searching the Courier-Post website doesn't come up with any article about this...
 
The original poster stays silent. All those news stories he posts but this weakens his future credibility.
 
As I very much suspected, it was an April's Fool joke. It was too far fetched to be realistic. Not a format change but a format change to sports - A change to another type of oldies format such as 80s would have made the joke believable.
 
And there's no sign that they're skewing younger anytime soon. I just heard Bobby Darin's "Up A Lazy River" and Debbie Reynolds "Tammy." I could do without the latter, but otherwise keep the real oldies coming!
 
A lot of people like to complain about this station because of its lack of consistency and the fact that it doesn't sound like WOGL did 25 years ago, but who cares? Many of the complainers still listen to it on a regular basis and enjoy it for what it is. One day it will really be gone for good so let's appreciate it while we can.
 
they could have said 80's oldies and mentioned the Point....
not sure how believeable that woulda been with Adult Hits Ben-FM though.
 
I should have read this before tuning on WVLT's stream on Tunein this afternoon. I had no idea that everyone would have such a laugh about this but in retrospect after the fact I had a good laugh with you even though I haven't lived in the Delaware Valley for such a long time. The local Oldies station I like to listen to in Jackson, MS has stopped streaming and I have a hard time tuning it in on AM being 1000 watts and 40 miles away, so I must admit that I have gotten fond of listening to what I consider as the best oldies station I have ever listened to on WVLT. And to suggest that they were going to sports would have been a great loss for Philly and vicinity if it wasn't a joke. Thank god it was a joke and I hope everyone got a good laugh out of it.
 
A station switching to sports seemed very real. It happens quite often, so I didn't even think it was a joke. Besides being April Fools Day, it was also a Monday and the first day of a new month, and it seemed a logical date to make a change.

I remember WWDJ switching from Top 40 to religion on April 1, 1974 which fell on a Monday,as well.

Glad to see WVLT is still with us, Last thing any market needs is yet another sports station. The pie cannot be sliced any smaller.
