WVLT

John:To answer your question about WVLT for dead air on Nov.23 & 24,there was problems with the feed coming into the station from oldies satellite Jones network.Whether it was a case with it being internal,it probably was.Headphones doing my show on WVLT was going in & out that night. As for Matt's 80's show being more promoted, his show is a by-product of the hours he puts in when he board-op the previous shows before he comes on.As for more 80's being added into the rotation,it's a fact of life that we all said that when 70's were intoduced in the late 90's.It's just a natural progression that most oldies stations do to attract younger audiences.Whether it works is a different story. Finally, brokered shows pay for their time, there are some Jones spots that run every hour because of their contract with Jones to use the satellite service. Finally,Sally has a show on Thursdays for an hour.As for ratings, they post in the AC & Wilmington markets, but not very high(anywhere from a 0.2-0.6).Anything less than a point usually doesn't get a reading except as "others".Arbitron does not include Cumberland County in it's ratings & WVLT is not rated by Arbitron.

WVLT is a very sad case.

The station has a killer signal, even at just 6,000 watts. Here in Ocean County I can get them clearly in Stereo driving around Manahawkin / Long Beach Island / Tuckerton.

WVLT *could* rate in Philadelphia, Monmouth/Ocean, Wilmington and Atlantic City/Cape May if properly programmed. However the ONLY market they ever show in is Wilmington and that's usually just barely a blip.

As for ratings, they post in the AC & Wilmington markets, but not very high(anywhere from a 0.2-0.6).Anything less than a point usually doesn't get a reading except as "others".Arbitron does not include Cumberland County in it's ratings & WVLT is not rated by Arbitron.

Cumberland is part of Arbitron's Atlantic City/Cape May Total Survey area. In Cumberland, WVLT usually shows up with about a 3 to 5 share, good enough for top 10 below a number of Philly stations.

Even as a 6 Kw class A, it is a fringe signal with no penetration power for ratings purposes into any of the heavily populated areas of the surrounding markets. It will always only get a trace share into those markets, no matter what it does. Even the very well programmed WSJO with a much better signal into Philly and Monmouth/Ocean only gets a trace share into those markets.

It is better off trying to super serve the listeners in Cumberland itself where it has the signal advantage.

Mike's right. It is not a flamethrower, and doesn't have the horsepower to be a regional station.

But, I think the point that was trying to be made was that 92.1 is receivable from Tuckerton to Center City Philly, because it what I call the wiffpig syndrome like 96.9...no adjacent channels nearby to interfere or impede in weak areas, except Cape May. The average decent car radio will pick it up fine in those distant areas, but not the $12 clock radio that the secretaries have at the desk, (That's the penetration to which Mike referred). It is NOT received in most all Cape May County as it's in a signal shootout with Fenwick Island, DE.

WVLT is not an Arbitron subscriber, but Cumberland surely is rated. However, ithe area is dominated by Philadelphia listening. WVLT is successful at super-serving the local area, which garnered them a 6th place tie in the Spring Book M-Su 6a-12a 12+. The tie is with WSTW.

Now, to prove Mike's point, the other Cumberland FM, WXKW, full powered, tall towered 50kw, and everything going for them, comes in 13th! WXKW is seen as out-of-towners, although licensed to neighboring Millville. WVLT has hundreds more of local listeners.

Yeah .! What happened to WVLT ? When I came to town about 3 years ago it had the absolute best music mix on radio. Then it changed to an unlistenable mess again. It truely sounds like 4 different radio stations. I can't play it in my staore at all. What happened and why ? ???

i dont know what that place has going on, but it sounds terrible. I have not tuned in since they had that monthes long glitch that made the music crack every 2 minutes

The problem is, they allow the jocks to play the music that they like. Jimmy Dee is a blavat boy, Lou Costello is a doo wop dope, and Dave Fleetwood is the only one who actually follows the format. The music director caters to the jocks and does not do what is good for the station. I have not listened to WVLT on a regular basis for years. Ill tune in to see if anything has changed. But of course, it doesnt. It is unlistenable. The brokered programming is horrible also. But it comes down to the bottom line and WVLT does a good job at making money. Thats all the ownership asks for.

The Ventresca's haven't owned the station in quite some time. According to their website they sold it to current owner Clear Communications, no to be confused with Clear Channel, for a song. Wether the song fit the format is unknown.
