WVOC complaint

Most stations, commercial and non-commercial, generate programming and use commercial or underwriting announcements to then support that programming and the other services that the station provides.

Clear Channel about 5 years ago stated (I think it was one of the Mays brothers) that their stations exist solely to deliver ears to advertisers and to generate revenue, with the programming as secondary.

While I don't believe this was malicious or "evil" as some of their critics have said, the fact is that in a market like Columbia, there is no service and the nature and the quality of programming is an afterthought. To take things to the extreme, if WVOC could still attract an audience, Clear Channel would probably go to an all-commercial announcement format and have poor Kev do testimonials from his plumber (really heard that one) to proctologist (haven't heard that one, but you could imagine "Go see the caring hands of Dr. Bottoms, for an insight on your health...").

Sure, there is still a significant audience for what they do, but when you control 6 stations, there isn't a heck of a lot of choice. You want CHR, there's only one place you can get it...

In the end, it really is all about the programming and service. The one sector in radio that was affected by the Great Recession but still grew in audience: non-commercial NPR and religious.

Again, not attributing improper motives to Clear Channel, but I am saying that their approach in a market the size of Columbia is, in the long run, a bad business decision not only for its obligations as licensees and trustees for the public interest, but also economically. If all you are is a mean, lean cash flow machine, you are extremely vulnerable to another downturn. In the end, we will see things start to play out in 18 months when analysts say that Clear Channel will not be able to service its debt and will be forced to restructure in some manner.

When Dave M was at WCOS, he was the Program Director and a jock or at least that's the way I knew it to operate. Heard him doing an airshift. When did he switch over to just news?

When I was there in 1980, Ken "Music" Martin was the PD of WCOS-FM and when he left, Jim Tice became the PD at the Great 98. At WCOS-AM, Hunter Herring was the PD who hired me, and Chuck Finley became the PD after him. Dave was never the PD when I was there. I think that might've happened sometime after I left in 1981.

Scott:

Bringing up Chuck Finley made me laugh. Back in 1988-1989, HITS magazine once captioned a photo of him a F&^K Chinley. An obvious inside joke, but one that was hysterical to me at 19!

With the exception of Ace & TJ, the worst morning show I have ever heard was Chuck Finley and massive-ego, nightclub Karaoke Host Lillian Garcia.

Stinky Pete-thanks for bringing up Mike Collins's name. Yes, he was at the old WIS back during the McKay-Benton days, and if I remember correctly, he was doing the drive-time afternoon show. He later moved on to Charlotte sometime in the 1980's to do a show on WBT.

Does WFAE stream on line-if so, I will have to listen. Always enjoyed listening to him on the radio decades ago on both WIS and WBT.

WFAE does stream. Mike's show is on live 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM Monday - Friday, and repeats each night at 9:00 PM. Mike does a great job.

Finally tuned him in online yesterday to listen to his "Charlotte Talks" show-sounds just as good as he did decades ago when I last heard him on WBT.

Kevin got his shot at the afternoon drive time back in 1999 about six weeks after it was obvious the show he was doing with Jeff Roper was bombing bad. There was really no one else left at WVOC to take over that slot and make it worth listening to. Wrisley had been forced out. David White, who was doing an evening show at WVOC when Wrisley left was the logical choice, but he left and didn't come back for over two years. Kevin is a great guy. He just does not have the depth nor the education to be compelling. But then again, it is Columbia, SC, one of the most collectively dumbed down towns in America.

Ooooooooo...is this the point we all jump in and defend Columbia's honor? By the way, before you flame like this, "On The Edge", you should probably hide your email address in your profile. I'll be kind and not say who you are to give you a chance to go hide it.

Trying to give honest assesment without overtly blowing my own horn. I've been out so long it really doesn't matter to me anymore. I actually miss Columbia. I apologise for my earlier remark.

We may not all agree with you On The Edge but yes your name does fit. As for Columbia yes it could use some revamping but then again name a place in this country right now that doesn't need a change in one way or another. My statement is for radio but yes it could cover a lot more than just that alone.
