WVSG

Did anyone notice that WVSG has applied to increase day power to 6.5 KW ND from their night site? It looks like the new tower on the OSU Golf Course won't be there for long.

Do they think they need that much more power to cover the metro in the same fashion as 5K from Upper Arlington does now?

Looked for this application early last week, with no luck. Mark, from WLOH radio said WVSG was going
to apply for 6.5 KW N.D.at their nighttime site a couple of months ago. He must have had some inside knowledge on this.

I think tOSU is going to miss the rent money from Saint Gabriel radio after WVSG moves their day time transmission site to their nighttime site near Grove City. St. Gabe appears to want to move
as quickly as possible. When I asked the WVSG station manager about this in early September, I was told this.

Regarding the tower site locations… we are considering all options regarding the best way to arrange our transition. We probably won’t make a decision until next summer.
Peace,
Bill

Here is the WVSH app:

St Gabe radio is paying $1,500 a month tower lease on tOSU Golf Course. Checked the FCC application.

From the other thread on this topic three months ago:

I wonder what prohibits them from using the night site as the day site too? Just use one tower @ 5kw instead of 6 @ 720 watts.
Stay Tuned Del...will be more like 6KW ND from that site...

Or just common sense and the ability to calculate coverage areas and protection ratios :)

True. A power of 6.5 kW ND from a tower at the night site results in nearly the same field efficiency as the existing 5 kW from the current day site.

It makes me wonder why OSU didn't make this move in the past, aside from the fact that they already owned the land for the existing day site and had been there for years. I wonder if they will remove that tower at the golf course? I sure wouldn't...vertical real estate is valuable with all the NIMBY issues involved in new tower construction these days, and now that it won't be a hot AM radiator it would be much more attractive to potential renters from a technical standpoint.

It seems odd to me that OSU spent the money to replace the tower on the golf course just a few years ago when they could have made the change to the night site instead. I just don't see how replacing the tower didn't end up costing them more, but spending money wisely never has been standard operation procedure for OSU from what I have seen through the years.

tOSU would be dumb to remove the tower.... WVSG is thinking smart.. They want to save all the $$ they can with the big cost of them purchasing AM 820 so removing $1500 a month tower rent from their budget is common sense. (since they own the night time site)

If it was replaced a few years ago, it should be in great condition and ripe for renting out to cell/paging/2-way customers for some income. Get a few of those in and they'll make more in rent than they are off the rent to St. Gabriel right now.

Assuming the City of Upper Arlington allows them to rent tower space, and that is the wild card. There are houses very close to the tower, and that has been a problem in some parts of the country where local residents have sought protection from RF enough to get the city or county involved.

By the way, does anyone know what the status is of the looney application of the Bellefontaine AM to get relicensed to Grandview Heights since it at least at one time proposed using the WOSU day tower?

I believe that app was dismissed.

WVSG said on the air last week that they have paid back 70% of their loan to the bank. Someone
posted on the R-I board last year that St. Gabriel Catholic Radio could not afford to buy WVKO-AM. They now just about own WVSG outright and are going to pay more for WVSG then WVKO-AM is
worth.

Wow.. They must really be seeing a surge in listeners since moving to 820 AM.. I know I see their bumper stickers on cars around town at least once a week..

I've seen them as far away as Zanesville within the past month. I imagine they are seeing quite a surge seeing how superior 820's signal is to 1580's.

Happy for them, tis' not my cup of tea but its something other than another country or rock station so I am happy they are getting some success ... good use for an AM signal.

Noticed the FCC has approved this application at the end of last April. Not sure when this will be
on the air. St. Gabriel Catholic radio has been leasing the land at OSU Golf Course for the past nine months so this will save them money in the long run. On the flip side of this, WOSU and tOSU will lose the income from the tower lease.

As some say, these coverage maps are for entertainment purposes only.

Almost as good as WTVN with a similar coverage...

guess I'm a little surprised at the coverage around Detroit. From just north of Findlay and from that point northward, CKLW always pretty much rode over 820.

Good for them... I still see "Catholic Radio 820" stickers all over town... at least see one usually once a day so they have a loyal following (However small it is for their niche format).

WVSG tells me they are working on the new daytime tower move and upgrade. They should be up
and running within the next three weeks they say.
