WVUM

I remember hearing WVUM from the University of Miami back when it first went on the air. Not all the time but once in awhile their tiny 10 watt signal made it all the way to Hollywood! It was refreshing, the people on the air were funny and you were never quite sure what you might hear next. Is WVUM still like that?

Having been the Production Director (72), Program Director (73) and Chief Engineer (74) for WVUM while attending the U I can tell you that it was a great training ground for broadcasters back then. A lot of Alums went on to pretty successful careers in broadcasting. Skip Herman was there in 70 - Herman of Herman and McBean. Dave Van Dyke was there at the same time and ended up the GM or KCBS for over a decade. Me, had some success in the business as a jock, PD, VP, CEO, and Owner. There were many others that went on to great success from WVUM. What they're doing now? Who knows. I do know that the Communications Department no longer teaches any radio courses - the rational being that "nobody wants to be on the radio these days". What a crock.
