WWCS is back on the air....in Espanol!

Oops, thought I was in the KHB thread.

The information still applies vs. 105.5, though, which EMF does not actually own anymore...IIRC they traded 105.5 to Keymarket in the 98.3 deal.

EMF not only owns the translators, it is in the process of buying 98.3 from Keymarket, so it will not be an LMA much longer. After acquiring the license, EMF will upgrade the facility, making the translators it currently owns unnecessary. Hence, it is selling them off.

Had them on for a bit today and they actually got a call from Pittsburgh.
I don't speak Spanish but the host clearly said "Peetsahboorgh Pennseelvayneeah"
several times. Turns out the caller was actually from "Washeengtun" PA. The
only other part I could understand was something about Home Depot. But the
caller was speaking Spanish so clearly they've found their first listener here.

I didn't make it up. I believe the girl called from Home Depot to request a song.
They seemed to be making an awfully big deal about getting a call from Pittsburgh.

And they will get more. One thing about a lot of ethnic communities is the fact that they're close-knit. Word-of-mouth will get around. It will gain momentum over time.

But they're not an economic force here. This is just about doing the cheapest thing they can put on the air. I'm sure they aren't paying any music royalties, nor are they likely to be paying the airstaff extra for being heard in another market. He's paying for an ISDN line, and probably a small fee to have someone from Radio Disney keep an eye on it at this end.

I believe the folks in Michigan buy the time. I haven't read and heard anything contrary to that.
On the other hand, I would not rule out some effort to keep la musica en Pittsburgh. There is a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce even for the tiny Latino population of the region.
Let's see how many more Home Depot employees phone in ... or anyone else here who speaks Espanol.

That would make sense. It's how Birach operates in general.

It would be interesting to know then if they are also buy the time here. Maybe it explains the ridiculous prices that were quoted to LMA 540, he already had these guys lined up.

Or maybe the time brokers in Michigan are "good clients", and he's basically throwing in Pittsburgh as a bonus because he has nothing else to run and needs to keep the needles moving?

Just a guess. I'd say it might be otherwise if you hear Pittsburgh spots on the thing (not just a call from a listener at a Western PA Home Depot).

I have no reason to believe that the Spanish format is anything other than a stopgap measure. In the
2000 census (I haven't found the data for 2010) Allegheny County was less than 1% Hispanic, and 1%
of its population spoke Spanish as a first language. That's not enough to sustain a format unless they
simply choose to continue simulcasting.

The Post Gazette Has removed the Listings for WWCS and WZUM from their Sunday TV Guild. They still list 1250 as WEAE, and 1510 as WAOB.
