Thank you, Scott.
I had inside knowledge of what transpired re: WWNQ. Tim Miller was already campaigning for WWNQ to flip to Classic Hits because he saw it as a hole in the market. This was even while Chuck McKay was GM. Ownership agreed with Tim, who had previously worked at the cluster doing mornings on Country Legends. Hence, satellite delivered Classic Hits.
Secondly, you will notice by the almighty Arbitrons, that the satellite delivered format didn't do too badly. That is because it was was well researched. It was never going to be a winner because it could not be tailored to the competitive situation in the market, but did far better than it has as a locally programmed format.
Second, Carolina 92.1 is a pyrrhic victory. It has already maxed out and 55+ is not a sellable demo. If they had stuck with country and continued to refine the format, it would have far exceeded Carolina 92.1 in revenues and audience simply because there is more opportunity there and no other competitor than WCOS.
I have nothing personal against Tim Miller. I think little of his programming judgment and care little for his personal demeanor, but that goes for a lot of people in this world. I have dealt with far less pleasant people.
As much as I love programming people, it remains consistent that they are (with few exceptions, like Scott) completely ignorant of the business realities of broadcasting. That is why I admire Randy Michaels. Business first. Art second.
