WWNQ IS GOING CHR! For Real!

Bugz said:
Short of hiring Jonathan Rush to do mornings (which they probably can't afford and he is probably under contract) there's no real way to create a buzz. If you syndicate a big name, WNOK already has Ace & TJ and Ryan Seacrest. What names are bigger that will draw listeners away?

kid kraddick

Stevie (DudeFan) You as always know only a little of the facts. WWNQ flipped to Classic Hits before Tim Miller became GM. The satellite format sucked I recall entire weekend of listening to PSA's being played over and over so dumpping the Bird was the right move, plus Columbia is too big a market for satellite crap. Real World: Too many stations playing the same music somebody has to bail out of the format makes sense for Double O they can't afford to have one station doing poorly.
Heck, nobody can and listen to all the dog formats still on the air.

CHR would work but not in this market I don't care who the owners are. If you totally understand Columbia then you know what I'm talking about.

As far as WWNU it had no choice to dump Country the music selection, rotation and image tanked. Charlie has one good book and he is programer of the year? Charlie is a good talent but he (or anyone) could never turn that piece of junk around.

AC is smart move. Its not going to be a huge ratings winner but who gives a crap it had a down trend so does every other station have ups and down. Hello Stevie, its Arbitron! AC offends nobody the net is bigger for the advertising pie. Heck, did they spend any advertising money? To even get what they have is a huge win.

Well Said BigGus. So if dudefan is a lawyer that would explain his money 1st and I'm better than the staff attitude. What station does he run? And are they successful? And since Dudefan didn't answer my prior question, Maybe someone else can shine some light on what's his beef is with Tim Miller?

Not necessarily...he is most definitely NOT motivated by greed...monetary or otherwise, nor has he ever given me the impression that he is "better" than anyone. I can only guess, but I suspect that Steve's tendency to keep his eye on what, formatically, will profit and what will not, is a combination of his responsibility to his investors and the fact that radio is a business(which is why it's called the radio business). Also, I did Steve an injustice when I said he was a lawyer. I guess I should have said he has a law degree with, as I understand these things(which is probably why I do not have a law degree), the emphasis in broadcast law. He isn't, to my knowledge, a practicing attorney. And, again to my knowledge, he has no beef with Tim Miller. As I said earlier, his take on things is as neutral as it gets...to his friends as well as those who are not his friends(which, before assumptions are made, doesn't necessarily mean they are his enemies). The thing is, his take on things isn't always what people, friends and others, want to hear. Is he correct 100% of the time? No, but who is? He is, however, just as entitled to his opinion as you are. Why can't a spirited, yet respectful, substantive debate transpire...without a groundswell of suspicious ulterior motives being alleged? As for Tim, I've worked with him and think the world of him. I know few people who do not think the world of him. As for Tim and Steve...I respect both of them immensely...both as insightful broadcasters and quality people.

Thank you, Scott.

I had inside knowledge of what transpired re: WWNQ. Tim Miller was already campaigning for WWNQ to flip to Classic Hits because he saw it as a hole in the market. This was even while Chuck McKay was GM. Ownership agreed with Tim, who had previously worked at the cluster doing mornings on Country Legends. Hence, satellite delivered Classic Hits.

Secondly, you will notice by the almighty Arbitrons, that the satellite delivered format didn't do too badly. That is because it was was well researched. It was never going to be a winner because it could not be tailored to the competitive situation in the market, but did far better than it has as a locally programmed format.

Second, Carolina 92.1 is a pyrrhic victory. It has already maxed out and 55+ is not a sellable demo. If they had stuck with country and continued to refine the format, it would have far exceeded Carolina 92.1 in revenues and audience simply because there is more opportunity there and no other competitor than WCOS.

I have nothing personal against Tim Miller. I think little of his programming judgment and care little for his personal demeanor, but that goes for a lot of people in this world. I have dealt with far less pleasant people.

As much as I love programming people, it remains consistent that they are (with few exceptions, like Scott) completely ignorant of the business realities of broadcasting. That is why I admire Randy Michaels. Business first. Art second.

I hate to tell you but Dude Fan does run a verry good LP in Columbia called WXRY. I just wish I could pick it up here in Pine Ridge better, because it has an awesome sound and it really sounds fresh when I hear it, and as for passion, this guy has it from the inside, so just go blow off. I wsh we had more radio owners as passionate as Steve is.

Hey Dude Fan are you in radio? And if so why? Are you in it just to make a buck? If you do have anything to do with the management of a radio station.... Please Quit Now! You and people like you are what is wrong with radio.... No Passion.... Go sell insurance or real estate or if all you really care about is $$$ become an Attorney!

Stevie, you know nothing of Tim Miller. The guy owned a radio station in his twenties, he worked in major markets, corporate programer for Citadel. He doubled the ratings and revenue for WOMG a proven fact. The Pilot Group offered him the GM position to leave WACH, they wanted someone with integrity to run the joint after the past Bozo's. The guy has his work cut out for him but they ain't nobody better to pull it off (if it can be done). WWNQ NEVER did well under the satellite a ton of dead air, jocks not from Columbia and poor ratings from the start. Classic Hits was not a good move. A Radio Ink story three months ago spoke about the 45-65 demo as having more money to spend than any demo and are willing to spend. So targeting a 45+ demo is a super smart more. The question is are they making money, I'll do some digging and find out.

Scott Summers said it best about Miller. Now, let me let you in on some inside I found out. Your beef is not with Miller as more it is with Double O Radio. You were working a deal with one of the higher ups when something went sour a position, a LMA its something close to that, still trying to ask around but its clear they ticked you off and you never forgave them.

In any event Double O made a ton of mistakes over the years but you have it out for Miller and Double O and thats too bad for if you were a true broadcaster at heart you would be pulling for the guy to finally make something out of that place.

BigGus your last post got me curious so I made a couple of calls and I was told that everything you said about Tim Millers backgroud checks out and is true. I was also told this guy Stevie aka DudeFan was very close to and in cahoots with a former WWNU employee who was dismissed from WWNU for using some colorful descriptions of what he would like to do to Carrie Underwood's tender side... And this went out live? Did anyone tape it? Could that possibly be true? Is it also true that SSummers & Lhsh are former double o employees? If true all I can say is ....WTF!

Hey DudeFan did you really mean this? "I admire Randy Michaels. Business first. Art second." Really? That's very revealing. Do you know him? I do.... He's not on my x-mas list

I don't know Randy Michaels. His personal behavior, if true, is not something I admire. But his life time track record in ownership, operations, and financing is something to be admired.

In the end, in this business, you are either an owner or you are peon.

Secondly, I believe you are referring to Tyler Ryan. I liked and still liek the guy. He works hard. Probably harder than many of you. When he got fired the first time from New 92, I offered our facilities to make and edit an aircheck and send and fax out resumes. He got hired back by Double O.

The offer still stood when that voice-track went out and he does some work as a volunteer. He also still does freelance for Double O on occasion.

Yes, we did have some initial discussions with Double O. But they were on an exploratory nature. It is no secret that Gamecock Alumni Broadcasters, Ltd. is interested in acquiring one or two full-market signals to continue our mission and mandate. But the right deal hasn't come along. It will. It depends on how desperate the seller is and how realistic they are on values.

To that extent, I should probably be backing Tim (and his aparent apologist Hoffa) because the end result may be a valuation that approaches stick value.

Dude you always take an economic approach to radio which is why your LP station is one of the more successful LP's in the indrusty. When we met and talked last year I started using your advice for WLRE and it as helped a lot. We too are looking for the right deal but sometimes it takes a good while to find something close to what your looking for, never the less good bad or in between it's all radio and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Good perspective, Gate. As much as I would LOVE for radio to start trending more towards the "artistic" side rather than the "scientific"(like it used to be), the sad fact is that it is a business and, as such, has to be treated as one. Though not referring specifically to WWNQ in this case, nowadays "passion" is mistaken for "being different for the sake of being different"...not always a good or profitable course...unless one plans on winning the lottery. Keep fighting the good fight.

It is great to see the Steve and Scott expressing their expertise and support. I do value their insight and are always on the money. I will express my last say on this topic, unless challenged later, on the CRG topic and their local management. I know this guy personally and professionally. The positive views of him are very deceptive. The truth will eventually come out and the shock will follow. Nothing further to say.

89 (Byrdman as he was known) worked for Miller at WOMG and WWNQ and it was Miller who saved his beak from being busted with his puke sound on the air everyone used to laugh all the time at how bad he was yet he still was on. So what happened Byrdie? You two were tight.

LOL Great shot! That pukey sound landed Oldies an 18 share at night when I was on and averaged a 13 on the weekends. You and Tim are tight that is for sure but you are blind....tough luck ;). We were never "tight". I quit CRG because of the weeknesses that were occurring and I was tired of seeing good people getting fired and replaced by third rated individuals...and the remaining list will become apparent. I went to work for WTCB until a sickness required I take a leave of absence. I am awaiting final word that I am to be listed for a liver transplant. After that I will get pukey again. Either way I will be fine...

Wow.... When I started this post all I wanted to do is talk about a possible CHR station (WWNQ)... Instead what has been revealed here is most enlightening and not necessarily in a good way.

With all of these agenda's working against Double-O how could they ever expect to succeed. Maybe you really do need a new CHR just to lighten the mood in Columbia. It's not a happy place is it? 89 I don't know you but I hope you feel better and find health and happiness.

But back to original purpose of the post, If the rumor is true I am personally looking forward to listening to a new local fun station that is not motivated purely by money.

Oh yeah... when I get to office tomorrow I am asking for a transfer back to Minneapolis. Warmer weather is overrated. Good luck to all of you.

Gee, I'm a friend of Tim ya think? I'm tired of the guy who gave me my first job and help mold me and so many others get slammed on these boards by some of these radio "pros" 89 you owe Tim a lot and you know it. I'll find out why you quit or were fired. It's amazing how you bad mouthed WTCB for years and you go back? Walk softly for if I can bribe someone to find an old aircheck of you on WOMG I'll post an mp3 of it and everyone can hear how you sounded. 18 share LOL. I'll find out the truth.
