Actually, Real Mccoy are one of the few Dance acts to have more then one big national hit, and thus are disqualified from being considered one-hit wonders. If you werelistening to CHR radio in the mid 90s you'd remember "Another Night" and "Runaway".
Another Dance act to have two big Dance hits - Snap. They had "The Power" in 1990, and were serious as cancer when they said "Rhythm Is A Dance" :D

I stand corrected. Two-hit wonder. ::)

Runaway was my favorite song back then... but... I'm still shocked to see that B98.5 picked up a dance song like that, in the same city where it used to be like having to pull teeth to get any stations to play dance music. That problem was somewhat solved, now we just need more stations there to act a bit more "normal". Still too many odd things going on in Atl. radio music-wise... with exception to the urban stations, which seem to never miss too many hit songs and always live up fully to their labeled formats.

WBTS is actually sounding like a typical rhythmic hits station. They seem to drift slightly back and fourth between sounding like a true rhythmic and sounding too urban by denying certain rhythmic hits.

Q and Star, well.. you already know the deal. Mostly alternative....

And SPEAKING OF ONE HIT WONDERS (How Ironic!), I'm currently watching the top 100 one Hit Wonders of the 80's on VH1, something I just happened to run into as I was remote viewing (or flipping through channels with the remote). I'm shocked - there are quite a bit of songs that came out that I never even realized were so big! I missed out on quite a bit of hits while living in the ATL! For example, I saw them play Jermaine Stewart as a hit and I was like "huh? I have not heard this once the entire 8 years I lived in ATL, and the same thing with Oran Juice Jones!"

I guess the disappearance of Power 99 was very unfortunate because maybe, just maybe, if they had stuck around, things would've unfolded a bit differently. I could name a bunch more artists that I heard everywhere else I went except for Atlanta. You'd think for the type of city it is and the location, things would be different. Around the time Power 99 was around, playing stuff like "heartbeat, you make me feel so week" and "express yourself" by Madonna, and other stuff from Pebbles, Janet Jackson, and Gilette...etc, I wasn't into radio enough to know about or realize differences in formats, but I do remember back in 3rd grade having debates at the lunch table in the cafeteria about who was better between V-103 and Power 99, and I always used to talk about how I liked Power 99 the most. I never officially noticed their disappearance, but just remembered realizing one day that there was only V-103, until I eventually discovered Star*94 and got hooked in either late 93 or 94. It wasn't anything like what we had here in Phoenix or L.A., or certain other places, but it was the closest I could find. I remember how I used to request Gin Blossom's "hey jealousy" and no matter what, they'd play some other hit from them, but would not play that song. Not even 93.3 / Z93, or whatever it was. Then two years later, around 1995 or 96 or so, SUDDENLY Star*94 decides "well, lets start busting out with the "hey jealousy". I was like "Oh how great! now that I really don't care anymore.." Yes, they were late on many things, but "hey jealousy" was just ridiculously late. I'm seeing Stacey Q now. This was another thing I can't recall hearing in Atlanta. I don't know. Maybe Star played it when I wasn't listening or something. However, if I caught them playing Nikki French two three or four times, then I don't know how I could've missed Stacey.

Wonder what it would've been like if there was a Q100 from the Power 99 days through today? What about 95.5 The Beat? What if Power 99 just never left in the first place? Things would've probably been different... (and a bit more enjoyable for me, music-wise).

Yeah, what if the Beat had stayed on track to today like it did back in September of 1999? As I recall their numbers were outstanding in the beginning. What if they had stayed a mainstream pop station (not adult-leaning)? Would they have done well today?

Can someone explain how this entire Q and Beat thing came about and unfolded? Because I missed the entire thing. Which came first? The Beat going rhythmic or Q changing? I remember connecting flights and hearing The Beat when it was brand new, sounding like what Q sounded like when I came to visit Atlanta about a year later.

If The Beat never changed, I wonder what Q would've done or if it would've even existed? Would anyone have ever opened up a rhythmic to begin with?

95-5 the Beat "segued" (as R&R put it at the time) to CHR/Rhythmic after Q came on the air in January of 2001. The question I have is why did Q pick a mainstream top 40 at the time with two other CHRs in the market already? Did they get a heads up that the Beat was going to go Rhythmic? I do remember the Beat being a Rhythmic leaning pop station like CC's pop stations across the country are today. I recall several CHR stations at the time having an identity crisis and seguing to Rhythmic and some segued to Hot AC. The cities that still today got left without CHR/Pop from those moves were Vegas/Phoenix/San Fran/Denver. Memphis and Tri Cities, WA segued their pop stations away to rhythmic, failed and brought them back to pop. I remember the last CHR identity crisis like this one occurred in the late 80s when pop stations were confused about whether or not to play rap and R&B as that type of music was starting to enter into the top 40 charts at that time - hence the creation of Hot AC. The earlier part of this decade seemed to bring an influx of rap and R&B into the top 40 charts again. It seems to have tapered off lately. The top 40 chart typically has less than 10 R&B songs on it now, wheras half of the chart was filled with R&B around 8 years ago.

I can't believe they play Real McCoy on B98.5! The same station who didn't even know who Stevie B was!

None of our "lite rock" stations here in Az. play anything by Real McCoy.

We have 99.9 which is Adult AC (hears their top 10)
1 Im Yours
Jason Mraz

2 Love Story
Taylor Swift STRIPPED

3 Better In Time
Leona Lewis STRIPPED

4 Viva La Vida
Coldplay

5 What About Now
Daughtry

6 Pocketful of Sunshine
Natasha Bedingfield

7 Crush
David Archuleta

8 Love Remains The Same
Gavin Rossdale STRIPPED

9 Where I Stood
Missy Higgins

10 One Step At A Time
Jordin Sparks

Wow - I just discovered something myself.... but here's the playlist:http://www.kez999.com/iplaylist/playlist.html Lionel Richie was currently playing..

AND THEN, WE HAVE 98.7 The Peak (which used to be K-Lite 98.7 FM)
And NOBODY (that I know of in Phoenix) Beats their "never repeat a song in a day" light rock playlist.

Still no Real McCoy (I tried to request it once, but no. They don't want Real McCoy, Amber, No Mercy, etc...)
But they play a lot of stuff! I guess they call themselves variety hits, but it all seems to sound related to lite rock and alternative in a way;
...well, it's best that I just post a link to all these hits they play - http://www.987thepeak.com/?nid=120

They even play "oh Sheila" by Ready For The World, which is CLEARLY not an Atlanta thing at all.

It's like Mix 96.9 on STEROIDS! 96.9 is similar to what Star*94 would be if they kept some of their hits from 1994 or 1993 (and even before) or so through today, all together. The only reason I care for Mix 96.9 and 98.7 The Peak is because I grew up with a lot of this on Star*94 from 1993 - 1997.

We used to have some good alternative stations, but.... now I'll just say we have a lot of good spanish stations. The country stations have the strongest signals, we lost out Spanish Top 40, but the Latin rhythm is still around, seemingly becoming less bilingual and becoming more on the spanish side.

If you want to hear Nickelback, then 98.7 or 96.9 or the alternative station is the way to go. Nickelback is not top 40 here. Actually, here's what top 40 is in Az, from the station WHO SHOULD HAVE KEPT the "Arizona's #1 Hit music station" slogan to begin with: http://www.yes.com/#KZZP?chart

Craig David is oddly, but surely on there, and even beat Madcon! There seems to be a couple of Pitbull songs missing however because no top 40 or rhythmic in Az doesn't at least seemingly play about 5 or 8 Pitbull songs or more...  As a matter of fact, Pitbull is playing NOW on Power 98.3! Danity Kane "damaged" is still hanging in there on most stations... C-Side is still being played on KZON.

That play list sounds almost identical to our Q-100's (daytime playlist). Q needs to sprinkle a few more of their nighttime (more rythmic hits) into the daytime...THEN, they would sound more like a true CHR/top-40. Just weird that they're really AC/Hot-AC in the daytime and then after 7pm the may play a little more hip-hop.....but even AT NIGHT on Q, you'll STILL hear, Lifehouse "You And Me", Plain White-T's "Hey There Delilah" and all the Matchbox 20 crap they play all day.

Try listening on a Friday night at like 9:50pm when Q comes out of a stopset with ads about Atlanta nightclubs and then, right out of their legal-ID comes, "TAAAKE TIIIMME TO RELIIIIIZE...."...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......... by Colbie Calait! Sorry but Q needs more improvement if they wanna be a solid Top-40. I mean, what CHR/Top-40 station still plays that song??

So it's safe to assume that there is no mix show on Friday Nights. If it were up to me and I ran the white house, I'd pass a law requiring that all top 40 and rhythmic stations should at least have one hour of mixing daily, and more on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday...

I also see that The Beat is really getting some attention with the recent Pitbull songs they've been brave enough to play! I guess it is a blessing to have The Beat in Atlanta because it does "normalize" a few things a bit on the rhythmic side of things there... or maybe Pitbull is just more of a west coast thi.... well no, Miami plays him a bunch, too

I'm a bit disappointed, however, to see our hit music station here in Phoenix is really decreasing the amount of spins the Craig David record is receiving! But at least they played it, when even KIIS didn't touch it... and it's still beating Dj Class in the top 50 list (Dj Class is currently #51..)

And who is this V Factory? Geez! I miss a day or two, I guess I miss a lot! Never heard of V Factory, and apparently they've been playing it for a while because it's #50 in their 100 most plays! I need to start listening to more of our top 40 because they seem to be ahead of the game, even beating many of our rhythmics. How could I never hear V Factory, then tune in to hear "that was #3 in our top 4 at 9...."? I really need to listen to KissFM because they are on top of everything for once (...although they still don't play Utada, which KZON does). KissFM has Kristinia DeBarge in rotation already.... One of our rhythmics are JUST BARELY starting to play "if you seek Amy" by Britney, and KissFM has been doing it for some time.

Just one question; Where did Natasha Beddingfield go? I guess Dj Sammy and Alice Deejay are hotter than Natasha, according to the number of spins in AZ top 40 radio.

(Ah... the number 1 song on the top 4 at 9? Jamie Foxx "blame it". Congrats to Jamie. Unlike his last song(s), this sounds as if it will last a while in top 40)
