Re: Ballentine, caught a very small bit of it when visiting a friend in Akron/Cleveland area. My friend said he likes it when Ballentine discusses social issues but not politics. That day it appeared he was into politics. Don't know if the bankruptcy talk is a regular feature but the Wikipedia entry on the host says:
"On his show he discusses, analyzes and dissects ideas and issues targeted not just to the African-American audience, but to a wider audience as well. Ballentine has championed the call for action for the Jena 6 and called for the "National Economic Blackout." He currently hosts a three hour radio show each weekday covering political & legal issues, education, religion, social issues and various other topics."
Don't know if Santos and prog talk returns to WWZN. Could be dispute over $ for fees in carrying the shows, could be someone paid more money to have WWZN do Yahoo!Sports Radio.
Again we are looking at 5 syndie sports networks in the near future, for now WEEI having ESPN and
WBZ-FM with Fox Sports. However we wonder if Sports Hub will opt for the new CBS Sports (Cumulus); will WEEI pick up NBC Sports which has the NFL package? And one rumor has WRKO 680 or maybe WEEI's
AM side picking up ESPN full time. (Wonder if they'd flip RKO to ESPN after the election, esp. if Howie leaves?)
Who is more prized by advertisers, 55 year olds who want political talk, or 25-40 yr olds who want sports talk? (Maybe I'm generalizing and there prob. are younger political/"news"-talk listeners, but I'd think it's an aging demo.)Even in a market like Boston that is highly provincial. Yes they want the local hosts but there must be some who want a national perspective. Well if Santos/prog talk is gone, add Yahoo Sports to the mix
via 1510. Many AM stations have gone full time syndie sports (ESPN, Yahoo, Fox) and we wonder if
WRKO and/or WWZN will be, or are, among them. It earns a little bit of $ at least.
Sports talk format is growing and advertisers prize it. Lots of stations switching to it--many of them on
FM. Example: since I'll be going to Va. soon, I noticed this station last year WVSP 94.1 Yorktown...it had the minor league Norfolk Tides etc.
