WWZN all sports?

Yes I was pretty sure WWZN was located in Waltham; as for Marina Bay renting out space to Santos,
I do know some stations were or are broadcasting from studios around there (1260? Salem stations?)
so maybe he got a studio around there.
Stopped DSL service--OK there's your "technical difficulty" but of course it goes beyond that, as you say
there was a reason for it.

>> so there is no easy way to get anything but Yahoo! Sports on the air on WWZN.

Your theories could well be true, yes.

I have no inside info on what is going on at WWZN, but here is a possible scenario: WWZN's ownership and Revolution Boston (Santos's company) are two different and unrelated corporate and financial entities. Rev Boston was leasing from WWZN the air time for the Progressive talk that was heard on 1510. WWZN owns the transmitter site and towers at 411 Waverly Oaks Rd in Waltham (Belmont line). Rev Boston was leasing the studios at Marina Bay in Quincy from the owners of the Marina Bay complex. WWZN was leasing (from one of the area's many telecomm-service providers) the DSL line that fed the programming from Marina Bay to Waltham.

When Santos failed to make timely payments for the on-air time he had been leasing, WWZN stopped paying for the DSL service, making it impossible for any of the Rev Boston programming (including syndicated shows) to reach Waltham and to be heard over the air on WWZN. Apparently, the dish and other equipment to bring the Yahoo! Sports programming to the Waltham site was intact, allowing WWZN to broadcast Yahoo! Sports. Other than the dish etc, there is no real studio at the Waltham site (and even if there is, Santos can't get inside the building to use it), so there is no easy way to get anything but Yahoo! Sports on the air on WWZN.
What Santos is likely trying to do is to re-establish the DSL connection from Marina Bay to Waltham, but with no access to the inside of the building in Waltham, that doesn't appear very likely to happen.
Please feel free to punch holes in this scenario or to furnish evidence that I am on the right track.

Thanks for posting the detailed scenario but you are wrong. Santos Media and the Management of WWZN share office and studio space at Marina Bay. The issues surrounding Revolution Radio have nothing to do with DSL service between the studio and the transmitter.

Not sure how recent the info is but radio-locator does say the station address is Victory Rd. in Quincy.
The Zone 1510 used to have a sep. website, prob gone now; not sure if that has info as well as to where they are. (1510thezone.com: nothing comes up; WHOIS searches say it's being used but give no info)

How long has WZN been over in Quincy? They had really nice studios when they were the zone and werein Burlington. but that was almost 8-10 years ago.

No idea
btw Donna H has a nice post on boston-radio-interest saying that Jeff was pretty much the only (paid) employee; no promotional budget (i.e. Blackstrap for example wouldn't promote the station); leased time
(others bought in too, like a show on cigars), lack of finances. Shaky finances and Dial Global
perhaps may be shopping the shows around, though not sure to whom.

With all due respect to Donna Halper Santos is not the only paid employee. Santos has a full staff of full time well paid employees.

Some unhappy campers on the 1510/RevolutionBoston facebook but I'll remind those progtalk fans that
I'm pretty sure WZBC 90.3 at BC carries Democracy Now! at noon

WWZN used to have their own site. Rev Boston brokers time from the station itself. (WWZN used to have 1510thezone.com as a site--apparently still registered but wasn't up...promos on station today say they
"stream live at 1510thezone.com". They also apparently stream live at Santos' site, RevolutionBoston.com though he has a separate site with his own content. RevolutionBoston.com apparently carries what's
on 1510 itself--these days, Y!SR.

Is that the case now? I thought one of the major problems making it highly unlikely for 1510 to ever be a thriving going concern is that the station does NOT own the tower site, but instead has a hideously expensive lease on it. If memory serves....the lease was bad enough to convince Eddie Andleman's group of investors to not go through with a purchase of 1510.

As for the present Yahoo! sports programming....I doubt it's on as a result of any purchase or leasing of air time.....I think it's simply the "default format" that runs whenever there are unsold hours.....sort of like how "Timeless Cool" runs during unsold hours on the Providence-market's 1320-WARL.

Indeed. I was wrong when I said that WWZN owns the tower SITE. The station owns only the towers themselves and, AFAIK, the ATU buildings at the tower bases--but NOT the land on which they are built. Also, WWZN must have an easement to cover the RF transmission lines that run from the TX building to each tower base--many, many feet below ground level. I suspect that there is a similar issue with the transmitter building. I suspect that the building is owned by the real-estate outfit that owns the 411 Waverly Oaks Rd Industrial Park, but WWZN owns everything inside the building. Last I looked, there was a large oil tank immediately outside the Tx building. I think the tank contains diesel fuel to run the backup generator, which I think is inside the Tx building. I suppose it's possible that the Industrial Park company owns the tank but WWZN owns the oil (if any) inside the tank;>) Real estate can get quite complex! Betcha WWZN owns the guy wires that support the towers but the real-estate outfit owns the guy anchors, some of which are rather impressive structures designed to raise the actual anchor points maybe 15' above the asphalt in the parking lot so that trucks driving under the guy wires don't snag the guys and take down the towers. An interesting question is who pays for the insurance policy that covers damage to cars in the parking lot that occurs when ice falls or is blown off of the towers and guys during winter storms.

Fybush today:" For now, WWZN is carrying Yahoo! Sports Radio programming while it’s presumably looking for a new leased-time operator." (fybush.com/nerw.html)
Not sure if Santos can make it back but that sounds like it may be doubtful. We'll see what happens and what winds up there (some wonder if DG could put their shows back on with no dealing with Santos). And if Santos can't get his shows back on 1510, where would he wind up?

(1510 could be, depending on who can front the money, prog talk, religious, ethnic, black oriented talk like what WILD had, oldies, etc.)
I was wondering if some of the big companies had considered buying 1510 if for sale. Would they think it coulc be worthwhile? Prob not but who knows. CC, CBS, Ent., Greater, Cumulus...

--Would CC get it to run prog talk or Fox Sports? After spending the money for FNX would they lay out more? And would it be too-much-sports for the area to put on Fox Sports--or Yahoo--
even if they can clear spots and make a slight profit?
--Would not think GM or Ent. would think it worthwhile but who knows. Cumulus? They are working with CBS Sports which might find a home on 98.5...Cumulus does have some talk shows like Geraldo and Huckabee

Most likely a prog talk return or yahoo sports for now

If I'm not mistaken, in a post either here or elsewhere late last week, one of the FOS (Friends of Santos) who took me to task for posting sheer speculation about the fate of WWZN's progressive-talk programming (no argument--my posts on the topic here and elsewhere WERE indeed sheer speculation) claimed that Santos et al would be back on WWZN today. If Santos and the other programs he was running were back on 1510 this morning, I missed them. As of a few minutes ago (9:45AM Monday 7/30/2012) WWZN was still running Yahoo! Sports.

Are you saying Dan, that Santos may have lied?!
Gasp

WITS was desperate back in 1980 to get to 50KW to keep the Red Sox happy and their options were limited - hence the bad deal in Waverly Sq.

It really came down to having one person hearing the games at night and even the move to Waltham failed that. John Harrington (Sox CEO) lived in Westwood and could not get 1510 at night.

However 99.1 came in fine ( they were the WITS FM partner after WWEL ) and Harrington and Haywood Sullivan were drinking pals with the WPLM owner.

The Red Sox wound up evicting WITS/WMRE from 70 Brookline Ave as they needed the space for NESN.

Temp. not in area to hear it but Mark of Bos Radio watch tweets Santos should be back on 1510 today 3-6p

Santos was on yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 7/31/2012), but this morning (Wed 8/1) ~7:00AM Yahoo! Sports was on. However, according to one WWZN schedule I saw recently, Santos AM program is not supposed to begin until 8:00AM, so he may yet be on in that time slot. Still, I wonder. I tuned in to 1510 at around 3:00AM this morning and heard Brother Stair. I did not tune in during any adjacent hours to see whether WWZN was running Roy Masters. (I haven't given up on my idea of the Stair-Masters program.:()

Jeff Santos has decided to focus on his afternoon program, Rebuild America, broadcast weekdays from 3p-7p on AM 1510 and several other stations. I believe he has not renewed his contract to lease the majority of the WWZN broadcast day.
