WXEL Is Now WPBI

Thanks for posting/reporting.
We will report when their HD2 stream switches from the generic Classical 24 feed to the local station (should be soon).

Thanks for the link to the Post story, DtotheJ.

It's been 15 years, back when 'XEL was teetering on the brink of "financial insolvency," as the story put it, and I still haven't recovered from the nightmare of working on the FM side. One poster called the GM at the time "the czarina." I hadn't heard that nickname but it sure fits, and she wasn't the only know-nothing miscreant in management at that time. (I could vomit when I see one of their former minions show up on TV pledge shows all these years later.)

Most of my 30-plus years were in commercial radio and TV. I thought the back-stabbing was bad in some of those stations, but nothing compares to the utter insanity in that phase of the station's existence. My brief tenure jocking Classical music there was far from the respite I had expected.

I'm delighted to see the call letters change. But did they have to pick WPBF, er, WPBR, um, WPBT, no wait--WPBI?

WPBI's 70db goes as far southeast as WAFG's goes northwest which in turn goes as far south southwest as WKCP's goes north northeast. I will Email the managements of both organizations, suggesting that the time has arrived for their Washington attorneys to discuss power/height adjustments and mutual short spacings. Also, WRMB could be involved. We hope WLRN will keep their noses out of this.

Any thoughts before I go ahead and embarrass myself?

Well, I chose not to wait, and sent the following to dolores@ and devans@

Dear Sir, Madam:

Classical South Florida's recent aquisition of WXEL, now WPBI, might open an opportunity for three stations to increase their signals.
WKCP's 70dbu contour goes as far north northeast as WAFG's goes south southwest, which in turn goes as far northwest as WPBI's goes southeast.
The Washington attourneys for the stations should explore the feasability of all three stations allowing short spacing and accepting second and third adjacent channel interferrence. This interferrence would be on paper only, as the FCC has shown that modern receivers would not actually suffer degraded reception. WRMB might also be involved.

WAFG's coverage could benefit most, extending well into both adjacent counties.
WKCP and WPBI could both become much stronger throughout Broward County.

Thanks for your time reading this

My understanding is that WXEL-FM (now WPBI) will re-broadcast programming from WKCP-FM 89.7 Miami, becoming a part of Classical South Florida, eliminating a need for a seperate studio and programming staff in West Palm Beach. Can anyone confirm this to be correct?

Also does anyone know the current status of WXEL-TV? My understanding is Barry University is also interested in selling the TV station.

CSF fully denies that they will do that and 42 is for sale at much less than 90.7 was.

"On [Wednesday] June 1st between 9 AM - 4 PM and again during intermittent periods on [Thursday] June 2nd...[W270AD]...the translator at 101.9 in West Palm Beach will be off air. This work is being done to replace the antenna and to prepare the translator for a power increase. 89.7 & 90.7 will be unaffected by these upgrades. Thank you for your patience during this upgrade."
They are increasing from 19w ERP to 250w ERP, about 12db up.

I’m still at a loss as to why Classical South Florida purchased the former WXEL. WKCP’s repeater at 101.9 comes in clearly in and around West Palm Beach. I can also pick up 89.7 as far north as Lake Worth. The Classical 24 network is well done, perhaps the best classical programming I’ve ever heard, and their product is repeated on WXEL overnight.

The change at 90.7 sounds awkward to this listener. It wouldn’t be so bad if they just changed the call letters, but they bill themselves (except at the top of the hour) as Classical South Florida even during news blocks. They also shut down their Internet stream. It took me a few days to figure out why I was walking up to a harsh alarm instead of the 5:30 news.

Here’s hoping they figure things out. WLRN and WQCS are fine stations, but 90.7 carries local news and information…at least for now.

WPBI FM and HD1 will continue carrying the major NPR, Florida, and local programs.
WPBI HD2 is expected to switch from the generic Classical 24 to the WKCP feed.
W270AD will still carry WKCP fulltime.

I hope you're not including the old WTMI-FM in your assessment criteria, because that would be damn right disrespectful.

Been nearly a week and niether of them have responded.

I will be very surprised if you receive a reply at all. I have learned many years ago that large and small corporations, including not-for-profits organizations such as American Public Media, rarely reply to any unsolicited suggestions or inquiries although there is still some time that someone may be cordial enough to acknowledge you took the time to contact them expressing an interest in the organization. Keep us updated.

I didn't realize what was on the link at first, expecting to find something related to American Public Media. I just about fell on the floor since I was laughing so hard once I realized what you had actually posted...

Glad you enjoyed my silly humor!
BTW...Delores@ is the Madam of "Dear sir, madam", GM at Grace FM's WAFG.
They, as I pointed out, could stand the most to gain.

I'm interested in knowing how WAFG will benefit from your plan... Exactly what are you proposing? Does your plan involve various tower moves and power increases?

The 70dbu contours of 90.3 and 90.7 almost touch, as do the 70dbu contours of 90.3 and 89.7.
I believe that the three station could all agree to up their signals the same amount.
In the. Case of 90.7, a reduction of their directional null, 89.7 could go higher on their tower, and 90.3 could increase power or move to a high rooftop in Fort Lauderdale. 89.3 could also be involved if WKCP moved north.
