WXGL

WXGL 107.3 plays a rock-leaning version of classic hits from the 70'S and 80'S right. Well with the stations already playing 70's and 80's why not add even more 80's and even add 90's material. I mean I get Cox's point to not fix whats not broken. However the only reason The Eagle has been successful thus far is no Classic Rocker is in this market. WHPT's music is too hard and modern for the Classic Rock Demo and a poor signal north of Tampa/ St.Pete Proper. Not to mention even with its stripped playlist the format WPOI "Point" did well in Tampa

Seeing as Q105 and sometimes Mix 100.7 are the only stations playing music from the 80's. Oh and Mix 100.7 being the only station playing 90's.

Either WXGL could go in a Adult Hits direction or a Hot AC/ Adult Hits hybrid. Or just Hot AC with 1970's.

Pretty much the idea is to still play a core 1970s and 1980's classic hits playlist. However add Rhythmic, Dance, R&B and anything Cox wouldn't normally touch. (Notice the very White oriented play-lists their stations have.) Then add 90's and 2000's on Top. Fuse the Playlist of "The Eagle" with the former "Point". Then add music that pertains to Top 40 Radio from the 1970's til Today. I hope Cox isn't just giving up on former "Point" listeners.

Anyone have hypothetical sample hours of what the hypothetical 107.3 should play as an Adult Hits or Hot AC.

90's music doesn't research well in a lot of cases, particularly for the male audience, which is why you don't hear much of it on the radio anywhere.

What about 80's music. Add some New Order, INXS and the music WPOI used to play. No stations play that stuff anymore. Would keep some some of "The Points" former audience content. (Which looking online their not content.) It mixes in well with what XGL already plays

To me, it sounds like you're describing WWRZ Max 98.3's current format.

That was exactly what I'm talking about.

When I programmed Star 107.9 in Columbus...we went through an awful period with the numbers. Finally, after much begging and pleading, I got management to agree to let us test our music on the internet. Six weeks in, I began to see a trend in the research. Know what it was?

All of the dance, urban, rhythmic and most of your alternative product was at the bottom of all of the weekly tests (with the sole exception of a couple of Prince and Madonna songs). The rock product was all at the top. And it continued in tests for several more weeks.

We cut every single song that did not test (relegating them to weekend club shows and specialty shows) and leaned rock and pop/rock as far as we could.

Numbers went from a 1.6 to a 3.4. 12 plus on a rimshot Class A.

Urban and dance product does not drive this type of format. And most of your 90's product tests even worse.

I'm not aware of any station that has succeeded mixing the different genres...other than for an "at the beginning" curiosity bump.

Given their current success, I doubt Cox will change anything (including the well-worn 300 song playlist) at WXGL. A testament that folks in their target demo like familiarity, I suppose.

I could see CBS flipping "Play" to a Classic Rock or Rock/Variety format to shave a few listeners from The Eagle, which could help Q105.

Max added an afternoon guy and claims that are more to the point than the point.

They are a better station than The Point. Just too bad I live in Citrus County and can only listen online. Just heard "Misses Robinson" by the Lemon Heads last night.

Except that it would also take listeners from Q105.

Probably far fewer than it would from WXGL, as Q105 leans far more in a "pop" direction. As long as there is little overlap, which can be done, as Q105 plays very little traditional Classic Rock, few 80's tunes, and nothing recorded after 1989, it could work.

...or they could just simulcast 1010 Sports WQYK on 98.7 and see if that sticks.

I like this idea much better for a variety of reasons: 1) Talk programming, including sports, is migrating to the FM band to attact "new" listeners; 2) the target sports programing demo base is greatly reduced below the 55+ adult demo; 3) there is little or no overhead in operating a simulcast operation as opposed to operating two seperately programmed stations; 4) there are no music license fees; and, 5) the gaines of a sports simulcast potentially far outweigh any losses as a result of "blowing up" the current music format.

When CBS does FM sports formats they are 100% live and local. They would have to do something way better than the current 1010 product, especially given 98.7's signal issues.

Agreed; the sports programming on 1010 would need in improve considerably or the addition of the 98.7 signal would be a complete waste.

Even though the 98.7 signal is not good in much of the metro area, 1010's signal is nearly non-existent from around the Dunedin/Palm Harbor border north at night and even though the radio locator map show's 1010 coverage to be good at night in south Pinellas, it's not all the great.

If the sports programming were worth listening to, then the 98.7 signal would give people from Holmes Beach* to south Pinellas Beaches and as well to give the people in Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Holiday and New Port Richey(as well as West Chase, Oldsmar and n.w. Hillsborough county) another sports option at night.

* - I realize that as far as the PPM ratings, Holmes Beach, Ana Maria and Palmetto don't count, but I don't think the people in those communities would complain about having another sports option.

That should not a problem at all for CBS Radio since WQYK-AM and WSJT-FM are both CBS owned-and-operated stations.

I heard The Beatles With a little help from my friends last night on the eagle. I found that to be interesting. Are they trying to go a bit older now or was that just a weekend thing?

I like the idea on Jack FM in Tampa, but CBS never put Jack FM on in Tampa in part (I suspect) because both classic hits and Hot AC were well-represented there, and Variety Hits is at its essence a hybrid classic hits/Hot AC station with a deep playlist. Clear Channel has only dabbled with the format in a few markets, Cox hasn't had one anywhere, and the guy at CBS who reportedly pushed for it from headquarters (Joel Hollander) has been out from there for some time now.

But us radio renegades listen to Max 98.3. It puts a great signal into Hillsborough even on house radios. I wish they would do more aggressive marketing. I think it is much better than the Eagle. I wish they would hire Corey Dylan too. Hall is live 24/7 on 97.5 and why not on 98.3. in that case I'd pour cement over 107.3 on all my radios.

I was quite surprised to hear Metallica's "The Unforgiven" today while listening to Max 98.3 at work (I was asked to change it but resisted). I had to do a double take to make sure I didn't have it on The Bone or 98 Rock.

Now if they would only replace "The Unforgiven" with some true 60s classics (Good Vibrations, Hey Jude, Where Did Our Love Go) or add a little more 70s gold and/or 80s upbeat pop (Freeway of Love, Everything She Wants, Looking For A New Love)...

Their newer, slightly harder edge takes away from the Five Decades of Music style of earlier this year, even though they're still announcing it in their promo spots.
