A legendary jock has just been let go at YRK. It is so unspeakable to me, that I cannot even mention who it was. You can find out on your own. This guy is one of the most respected broadcasters I have known. A true gentleman, a loyal employee, and audience favorite, and just a good person. The only music format I like is country, and I have not listened to YRK in about 4 years- i listen to everything via Pandora and Itunes. That has got to tell you something about the state of YRK if a P1 in the format has not listened in 4 years! This will only make it worse. The only thing that seperates a music station from new technology is the names we know, and the people we trust. YRK just let one of the best go. It's too bad.

This is one of these funny posts I see on boards a lot. On the one hand, he claims the only reason people listen is for the local personalities, and on the other, he hasn't listened to the station in 4 years. And this is one of the few area stations that has stuck with 100% local talent through several ownership changes and a bankruptcy. So why should an owner keep a full local staff if the audience has already left for Pandora? Certainly no local talent at Pandora. If all your customers are eating burgers, why are you still selling hot dogs?

So will we now see the debut of the new Townsquare syndicated 7-midnight show Taste of Country with Jeremy? WYRK is Townsquare's biggest country market, and the only station not carrying the show.

I think you misunsterstood my point. My point is that presonalities are the only thing that keep radio from Pandora. I am an exception to this - i have already left, but plenty others are still listening. I did not say the ONLY reason people listen is for personalities...stop and read and THINK about what you are reading.

No I didn't. You didn't support WYRK when it was 100% local DJs, yet you want them to continue this practice without you.

Answer my question: If you didn't stay with the station when it had a "legendary jock," why should the station keep him? You already cast your vote against him.

I could care less about a legendary jock, so for multiple reasons, i listen to other forms of media for country music. The people who do listen to YRK, will miss the person. It is just the way that audience is. I do not listen to YRK for lots of reasons....jocks bad (with this exception), too many spots, processing is inferior to my XM, i just want to hear the songs i want to hear, when i want them.

In general, I am speaking, it is not good to lose a BOSS JOCK! It is not a step in a forward direction. They will be voicetracking the show. And even then i would listen, becuase you still have the tune out elements i was talking about!

I see what you were saying originally, but that is not completly what i meant.

I agree with Nick Gerard..
tell us who.... since you brought it up..

it is not like there is a pending format or
you signed a non disclosure statement
did u ???

and it is not like a pending..
decision, you typed let go.
it is not a format change coming,
or a big secret...or is it ???

Hard to take anybody seriously who thinks that XM processing is better than any local radio station.

The jock that WYRK fired was John LaMond, one of THE finest gentlemen that ever sat behind the mic. He was there well over 25 years. Their consultant was blamed for the decision. They wanted to "move in another direction". This is shameful. They have had their best ratings ever with John, so "move in another direction" sounds lame, unless they would like fewer listeners, which is likely with John's exit.

I've heard John and thought he was quite good...wonder if $$ was a factor given his 25-year tenure.

makeradiowaves, did you listen to 'YRK 20 years ago...when Ken Johnson programmed it and it sounded like old phonograph records? They fixed that 'round 1997, my wife noticed it first on a solo trip thru WNY. We both drove thru a few months later and wow...vive la difference. To me it's sounded great ever since. Definitely better than XM. And since Justin Case and Mark Lindow were thru there with CBS/Infinity in the 'late '90's, the presentation has been much more entertaining.

I always look forward to tuning in 'YRK when passing thru.

It should be clear as to what Town Square is up to. WJYE recently changed its long time morning show with Cheryl Hagen & Joe Chile; Joe Russo, the PD of Jack also departed last week and now John LaMond has been shown the door. Thinning the herd. TS management seems to frown on staffers who may be getting a bit long in the tooth and make a good buck. Age appears to be a factor in these decisions, but proving age discrimination is a difficult task. Good luck to LaMond.

So, apparently killer ratings at the #1 station in town doesn't guarantee squat if you're a mid-day guy. That's not the first time it's happened in this town.

January can be a cold month. Best wishes to John.

Without knowing any anecdotal evidence, I recall reading something last year about TS deciding to have a little of what Cumulus and CC are having.

If the Buffalo Country market is anything like my market...where focus group after research study shows the listeners want personality with their music...Townsquare messes with the "secret sauce" at their own peril.

thru this thread, found out about Joe Russo...wow

I will say this...
while I am not shock by John LaMonds departure..
and I dont wish it upon anyone... the few times I have
listened,
* the right answers here* he is a iconic buffalo radio guy
* he is Excellent at what he does ( did) and I mean that..

> but < here it comes > the few times I listened to him
recently - say the work vehicle happen to have it on,
or the family commute while driving, or party ( family / office )
or it just happens to be on, he has soooo bored...at what he did..

a few years ago, I recall the bills game being on another channel
(obviously) and I wanted music, he hada a lot more
passion and energy for his work. a recent listen he was speaking
of upcoming music and acted liked todaaaaaa...( yawn) todays
artist are just entitled to successs...and a few names sound like
he was reading..and didn't seem to interested in...
we ALL know what , err how that sounds or comes off when done at
a chr station... and what happens kids pick up on it, and flip the dial..

thoughts?

now please dont send me negative oh what i have done lately, i have been
very happy...at my non radio job for over a decade.. but read what I wrote
with an objective piece of mind...

If the idea is to be "NEW Country", then it is extremely important to hire a full energy staff of Radio Announcers that can deliver a Country version of CHR radio.

I don't think this station is aiming for that kind of demo. These guys have more of an AC sound. Women in their 30s.

Clues, now on sale, just 3 for 8.99 at the Clue Store. WYRK is a market leading radio station. Top 5, all demos, often #1 in the key demos. It promotes consistently well and makes very few mistakes, although LaMond's firing might be one of them. In all likelihood, Country P1 listeners will miss him. For a few weeks. And then it's business as usual. It also helps that WYRK has no direct competition. Sorry traditionalists, WXRL does not count.

Not a country fan. How did they replace LaMond? Shift the line-up? VT? Syndication? Website is useless, and I don't care enough to listen.

they def. arent new... or nu country
as they played tim mcgraw twice in a
2 hour window...last week

I dont listen either... but
work happen to have it on...
working with quite a mix, and
after the second McGraw song was
time to see what else was on...
