WYSP To Flip To WIP Simulcast "By Labor Day"

I hope 610 doesn't end up as Family Radio. I can hear 610 AM underneath semi-local WSNG 610 out of Torrington, Connecticut at Night when I'm listening to Dr. Joy. I can tolerate hearing sports-talk underneath, but I can't tolerate hearing Family Radio and their end of the world nonsense.

It doesn't sound or look like Family Radio wants a trade. They just want to unload the big class B signals to raise some easy cash.

Unless CBS is told to sell off 610, it's staying put.

My only issue if CBS gets 106.9 is that I thought Family Radio was selling off both 106.9 and their Annapolis outlet as a two-fer. CBS getting both stations is impossible unless they planned to spin off the Annapolis station (which would count against, IIRC, BOTH their DC and Baltimore caps).

YDNRC.

WFSI can be "home" to only one market, and thus count against ownership caps only in that market. (The exception to that would be if it were "home" to a nested market such as Nassau-Suffolk within NYC.)

In any event, CBS is not at the cap in either DC or Baltimore. In Baltimore, it has just three FMs and one AM, giving it room for at least one more FM even given its ownership of WJZ-TV. In Washington, it has four FMs and one AM, giving it room for one more FM within the cap.

Duly noted! Thanks for the clarification. :)

You should see how small and unimpressive WPHT's transmitter is on Church Rd. in Cinnaminson, NJ. I drive right past it picking my daughter up from summer camp.

There was a time......http://hylitradio.com/wcau_dx WCAU Short Wave http://hylitradio.com/W3XAU

Where in Newtown Square was the transmitter and when did they move to NJ? I live in Willistown, PA now, next town over. In 1978, I moved to Cherry Hill when I was 9. Back when my parents had a POTS phone, once in awhile we could hear 1210 in the background since they live so close to the transmitter. Now they have FiOS, no 1210. I also remember having a crystal radio and 1210 was the station that it picked up.

let me ask this question

what becomes of the WKDN translator @ 92.3 in ocean city once 106.9 gets sold do they just simulcast family radio off the bird or do they shut that down ?

Maybe GM could buy it and simulcast WMMR.

Old WCAU Newtown Square Transmitter Site

Where in Newtown Square was the transmitter and when did they move to NJ?

I'm pretty sure it was moved from Newtown Square to the present location around 1940. It's my understanding the site was along West Chester Pike, a few miles west of where the Country Squire is these days. I recall once being told the current transmitter site, pre-NARBA, was actually "cut" for 1170 k.c.-- and is still that way today. I believe Newtown Square remained in use exclusively for shortwave about a year or two longer, before SW activities stopped altogether (the Federal Government purchased the equipment for war use). The person who gave me lots of good information about the old 'CAU site sadly is no longer with us. I wish I'd paid closer attention.

There are some on this forum who know a lot more about this than me. Corrections are welcome and encouraged.

I'm puzzled about the simulcast rule. Initially, the FCC decreed that AM-FM combos in big markets had to program separately a certain number of hours per day. Naturally, there are ways around regulations which are almost tradition at this point, but was the spirit of that rule rusted out by the first de-regulation wave? ......

Exactly. The FCC wanted FM to become a service independent of AM, so they limited simulcasting in cities of over 100,000 people to 50% of an FM station's air time around 1967 and to 25% about ten years later. By the 1980s FM listening had surpassed AM, so the rule was repealed.

I don't think they will simulcast very long. I think 94 retains the WYSP calls (note the sp) for sports and does a whole lot of personnel changes to boot to skew younger.

How about they also retain the 610 WIP calls and at some point (after football season) revert to some kind of modern-day version of the old WIP format, now that WHAT and WPEN are gone, they'd have that market to themselves.

Of course, the reason WPEN and WHAT are gone might have something to do with there being no market to speak of. It's great to corner the market on nothing. :)

It would stay with whomever bought the WKDN license, unless the buyer decided to sell it in a separate deal.

this was on Facebook from Gashouse Radio:

Is WYSP gone? Anyone hear this or any updates? Also, 311 Pow Wow Festival special continues. Playing all songs from bands playing the festival all weekend, excellent playlist
94.1 WYSP Changing Formats?

On Tuesday, Dan Gross of the Philadelphia Daily News wrote: “STRONG RUMORS around the local CBS Radio cluster suggest that 94 WYSP will become the FM home of Sportsradio 610 WIP and drop its longtime rock format around Labor Day.”

I like that last idea. Swap 610 for 106.9. Put WIP on 94.1 FM and put WYSP on 106.9. WIP gets the stronger signal on 94.1FM, WYSP stays, and moves to 106.9. Overflow sports conflicts could still be heard on WYSP. Family Radio stays, moves to 610AM and Family Radio gest $$$ for 106.9 from CBS. Move the Phillies over to WIP-FM too.

Danny doesn't move to an FM WIP. The morning show on WIP kills Danny in the ratings. CBS won't touch WIP's morning show, just move it with the station.

Where do you get ratings for individual shows and time slots? is it possible that you could provide link or cut + paste the latest ratings?

Personally its my belief that WIP's morning show is horrendously bad to the point where its unlistenable. cataldi, rhea hughes I just dont see any talent or reason to listen. Yet I have heard they bring in very good ratings.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but if this happens, will there be any point to keep WIP as sports? No one will want to listen on the marginal, scratchy AM signal when they'll be a beautiful, clear FM signal that covers the same if not more territory. I say bring music back to 610 AM. Rumor has it that the Broadcast Architecture smooth jazz network is looking for AM affiliates for it's smooth jazz network to bring that format back to cities that have lost their FM smooth jazz station. "Smooth Jazz 610 AM" would be fun!
I like the idea, but might I suggest that should WIP revert to a music format, that it be similar to Timeless Cool. Maybe some of the 'elements' form the old 1340 could become part of the new 610. I for one wouldn't mind seeing a blend of pop standards/jazz/big band. Something to remember is that 610 has (or at least used to have) a pretty damned good signal that covers a good portion of Philadelphia's outlying areas.

It's actually Church Street, in Moorestown ;) (It is pretty close to the Cinnaminson Township line, though.)

Agreed on how small it looks up close, it looks much taller from Haddonfield Road near Routes 90 and 130

Ya think the simulcast would begin as early as this Thurs (8/11) to coincide with 1st pre-season Eagles game???

that would be nice i could put 94.1 back in my preset back agian

If the simulcast happens, it won't be a surprise; they will promote it. Maybe a stunt between, but they would promote a change that big.

WYSP: With OVER double the Cume and almost twice the ratings points 12+...and on top of all that, stronger in the target demos than WIP...

It's only logical that the radio pros here and the decision makers at cbs would dump WYSP and simulcast WIP...

;)
