WYSP To Flip To WIP Simulcast "By Labor Day"

I hope that CBS puts WFAN & WBZ-FM on the 94.1 HD subchannels like they do in Baltimore....would be nice to listen to WBZ-FM without sucking up my smartphones data....

I really thought Jody McDonald would be part of the new line-up. Not too sure the new midday show is going to work. I do like Gargano and Macnow in the afternoons, but five hours is a long shift. I wonder if 94 WIP ( I'll never get used to that) will pick up the Phillies' games in 2012.

They should start simulcasting the Phillies games on 94.1 and 1210 immediately unless there's some contractual reason why they can't.

You know in all this WIP & WYSP talk, last person I figured to get involved in it all would be Howard Stern. Why is he still keeping tabs om ysp?

Anyway, like the afternoon change. Not sure how long Barkann will last. The guy goes on vacation all the time at comcast already.

Someone above mentioned that 94.1 should keep the ysp calls, because that doesn't matter in a ppm world. However WIP is really part of the identity of sportradio 610. If they just moved 94.1 it would be like a new station to many.

Its odd Rob Ellis said football would be on 610 & sometimes 94.1. To me I take that as meaning aslong as no other sporting event (phillies) aren't blocking the game. Now as big as Phillies baseball has become I would think it would be the otherway around. That being eagles would always be on FM, AM too when no phillies game.

If 94 wip is really gonna carry all 4 sports, I wonder if they will do what comcast does, and give later in its season 1st in the peaking order. For example in April comcast will move Phillies games that are on at the same time as flyer/Sixer to TCN, but in September Sixers/flyers/eagles pre & post games are the ones who have to move to TCN.

Oh, and one last thing. Kinda surprised, but happy they will be calling this "94 WIP" instead of 94.1 WIP or 94-1 WIP. I know everything is digital now, but I still hate how stations on the .1's feel the need to include that in their name.

well thats a bit of a downgrade to only have the Eagles on FM "sometimes". I get that the 610 signal is probably stronger, but com'mon!

The Eagles will always be on 94.1. What I believe was being referred to was the syndicated Sunday and Monday Night Football packages. Those will probably be on 610 only unless it's a big matchup.

The only issue I see is that 1210's cume would immediately go into the toilet. There are a lot of people who only tune in 1210 for the Phillies games. Occasionally one of them might be converted into a listener of 1210's talk programming.

I don't know which is more of a priority for CBS- building 94.1's audience or maintaining 1210's. They can't have it both ways. CBS may decide that 94.1 is going to do well enough with the Eagles that they don't need the extra promotional push that Phillies games would bring. Or they may give up on 1210 entirely. We'll see.

Less Eskin(s) on the dial is a good thing. My biggest fear was in the flip there'd be some "genius" who'd think it was a good idea to have a father-son sport show with the Eskins. Thank god this was averted.

Same "genius" who came up with Sports Rock? Was that when WMMR was Westinghouse or CBS?

Stern just got done ranting that WYSP has failed since he left and went to satellite...

And it isn't the only one... There's also the aforementioned K-Rock in New York and WBCN in Boston, plus KUFO in Portland, among others.

I hope this answers Irishfl's question. ;)

I really hope the Phillies are off 1210 when there will be 2 WIPs in town unless the Sixers & Flyers are playing also. Put the Phillies on 610, 94.1 or both. If CBS chooses to put the Phillies on one of the WIP stations, they can leave the sports talk on the other. When it's just Flyers and Sixers, one on WIP-AM & one on WIP-FM?

I'm guessing the priority is:
Eagles
Phillies
Flyers
76ers

When only one of the above is playing, it should be on 94.1 with talk on 610 (play by play gets more benefit from the better fidelity on FM than talk does). Or maybe a simulcast. What makes sense probably depends on the daypart.

When two of the above are playing, the higher of the two should be on 94.1 and the other one on 610. When three are playing, the third one overflows to 1210.

When all 4 are playing, I don't know. When was the last time that happened, and what would they do now?

will radio 104.5 shift to a more active rock direction ?

I see no reason for them to... WMMR still covers the Rock area, and WYSP was Classic Rock -- not exactly an easy jump for Radio 104.5 to start putting Rush and Motley Crue tracks next to Foster The People. Wouldn't be too surprised if WMMR widened their musical lane a little to accommodate some of WYSP's former listeners, but I don't think this will affect Radio 104.5 at all.

I have been reading updates on this thread throughout the day. I took the wife and kids to Ocean City, NJ for dinner and some boardwalk time. We got in the car to come home around 8:00 and I flipped the dial to 94 as we left just to see if anything was going on and to my brief shock the info on the radio read "94.1 ESPN", and baseball was on! Before I could say WTF?? I noticed that "Norfolk" flashed by on the dash as well. Very strange coincidence for sure. A few miles inland I picked up the Eagles feed on YSP and I did hear Merill Reese talk about "94 WIP" coming on September 6th.

Wil,
You were probably hearing some tropo ducting. It's very common on FM and TV during the summer.

Are all of the DJ's at WYSP on long-term contracts with CBS? That's the only reason I can think of them not canning all the jocks and going fully automated between now and Labor Day. A jock with a contract isn't going to ____ where he eats and pull some kind of ridiculous stunt.

But I'll bet any and all of the part-timers were let go this morning.

Considering Bonaduce (whom Marc Rayfield admits was the main obstacle between WIP simulcasting on 94.1 sooner) has a little while left to go on his contract... where will you put him? Maybe he can start checking in on Don Geronimo's morning show in Sacramento... Jennifer Reed? Eagles Radio sideline reporter. Gordon? WPHT update anchor. Spike? I'll get back to you on that one.

BTW - I'd love audio of Stern's WYSP comments from Thursday if anyone has it.

Eagles Radio already has a sideline reporter. :)
