WZTI Back On Air?

Title says it all - WZTI is very weak - it appears to be broadcasting WRJN - the signal is quite weak compared to normal.

107.3 FM does appear to be rebroadcasting 99.9 FM (appears to be translator of a translator)

WRJN Racine-Kenosha. And WZTI Greenfield. I wonder if Civic will change the call sign for 1290 once the ownership change is finalized?

So, in the past 2 days I have been all over Kenosha and up to the north side of Racine and not a peep from 1290. 1400 is still IDing it, so if it's on it has to be VERY weak.

One thing I wonder about is the simulcast with WRJN, in particular when it concerns the Brewers and Packers. WRJN holds the Racine/Kenosha rights. However, WTMJ and WRNW hold the Milwaukee rights, respectively. Now, WZTI is obviously a Milwaukee market station. Not that anyone in the immediate Milwaukee area is going to listen to the games on WZTI, but that could be an issue if they fully simulcast WRJN.

I'm guessing WZTI will stick with oldies during those events.

Even if 1290 is only a small fraction of normal power, that qualifies enough to be able to restart the 107.3 translator...so maybe that was the more immediate concern? Who knows I guess.

Likely WZTI is operating on reduced power until a full repair is complete. Or, they will operate long-term at reduced power. Someone could check the FCC filings if interested.

Simulcasts often change for sports coverage. WBBM 780/105.9 is a closeby example.

Not right now you cant

Yesterday before the shutdown there were no additional applications for WZTI since the approval from the commission to remain silent. I was in the area on Monday and it was dark.

They might turn it on occasionally, or running a long wire, while they get things fixed.

On a side note, I noticed a Facebook post a week ago from Civic Media about one of their recent acquisitions, the WELY stations in Ely, MN. They proudly posted pics of the new FM transmitter being delivered and installed. Good for Civic Media for rescuing a small, well-loved rural operation that had seen quite a bit of turmoil over the years. They've seen plenty of owners over the years, even including the late Charles Kuralt, up to the most recent owners, the local Ojibwe tribal reservation, who took the stations dark and put them on the selling block. Sage Weil, the owner of Civic Media, obviously has deep pockets and an impressive desire to make small town radio work, and I absolutely respect that.

Civic is also a public benefit corporation, which is different from a straight up commercial LLC/Inc, remember that

WZTI is back on the air, simulcasting WRJN. Power does seem low, as it broke up a bit in West Allis, which is not very far away.
I just listened to Don Rosen and they've been talking about the new frequencies. They're going to fix up WZTI as it got damaged in the recent flood. No word on the Brewers or Packers games though.

I had the opportunity to work for Don in Milwaukee more years ago than I want to remember. 🙂 A true professional and a great guy.

For those looking for an answer...

WRJN and its two translators (98.1 and 99.9) aired the Packers game, while WZTI and its 107.3 translator played oldies.
