XEWW (Mighty 690) Rosarito Cross Border Controversy

WAPA Ponce PR *had* a syncro in Aguadilla WI3XSO but the FCC pulled the experimental license for it.
That was one of Blanco Pi's multiple synchros mentioned earlier.

Seems XEWW ceased the Chinese programming lease early Jan. 2023. Cross-border stations progammed for "other country" require 325(c) FCC permits. (I believe there is an equiv. Mexico permit needed as well.) In any case, interesting on Jan. 19, 2023 FCC received 325-STA dismissing GLR Southern CA LLC cross-border permit. (The Chinese Company; lease no doubt ended.)
Report 325-00240. File 20200728-00003.

XEWW now is simply running soft AC English songs as filler until new program leasee is obtained.
These high power border AMs are finding it difficult to find lessees. 1090 is a case in point, took them a year or two to find the present English sports program lessee that is provided via IP from NY.

An earlier post mentioned KKOB Albuquerque has or had one.

CKLW had one in the tunnel between Detroit and Windsor.

If you use a UK based SDR, you might be able to catch some Absolut Radio translators on 1215 kHz. But time may be or may have run out on that.

Speaking of SDR's, I'm tuning into XEWW now. So, does anyone know who is behind what is being played right now and what the future plans actually are?
At one time KKOB 770 in Albuquerque had one which operated post sunset only with 1 kW in Santa Fe, as KKOB's nighttime directional null runs pretty much through Santa Fe. I don't know if it is still in operation.

But what interest can the PRISA group have in a station like XEWW, if its main interest is Spain and some South American capitals?

@Los 40, AM
Its main interest are in 1) Colombia where it runs five or six dominant national networks, each with about 20 or so station. 2) Chile, where its 6 national networks control nearly half of all listening, 3) other investments of similar proportion in Costa Rica 4) a major station with national repeaters in Argentina 5) Stations in France and Portugal 6) Stations in Brazil 7) Many others, includiing Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, with a total of 1250 radio stations. 8) The leading newspaper in Spain and interests in other nations as well.

From them:

"PRISA is the world’s leading business group for the creation and distribution of education, news and and entertainment content in the Spanish-speaking markets. Present in 23 countries, PRISA reaches millions of people through its global brands: Santillana, EL PAÍS, LOS40, W Radio and AS. It has become one of the most important education and media groups in the Spanish-speaking world thanks to its high-quality content, as well as its innovative spirit and its eagerness to embrace the digital economy through the connectivity and the continuous improvement of increasingly personalized products and services. The Group’s presence in Brazil and Portugal, and among the growing Hispanic community in the US, opens up a global market of 700 million people."

From their own public financials, just the first 9 months of this year had income of EUR 587,000,000.

"PRISA’s Board of Directors, meeting this Tuesday, has approved the results from the first nine months of the year, during which the company reported revenues of EUR 587 million, an increase of 21% compared to the same period of the previous year. Despite macroeconomic uncertainties, the third quarter has continued to trend positive, with an 11% increase in revenue for a total of EUR 199 million."

And here are their Mexican interests (several are national networks):

Expanding on XEWW owner PRISA:

Spanish-language radio group PRISA Media is expanding its U.S. presence via a partnership with iHeartMedia. Under the agreement, the streaming services of PRISA’s spoken-word radio networks will be integrated into the iHeartRadio catalog.

(Inside Radio May 12, 2022)

Further:

PRISA Radio has a presence in thirteen countries, including Spain, Colombia and Chile. It operates in the U.S. via its Grupo Latino de Radio- GLR subsidiary, which owns or operates “Caracol 1260” WSUA Miami and “W Radio 690” XEWW Tijuana-San Diego (690). The deal with iHeart greatly expands its U.S. footprint.

Carlos Núñez, Executive Chair of PRISA Media, said the agreement “allows us to make a significant leap forward in the group's commitment to the Spanish-language market in the United States, solidifying our position as a media leader in the Spanish-speaking world, while scaling up our content and opening new lines of busin
ess.”

Not sure what's happening with 690- love reading about what you think. I found out what they were airing on Tuesday. "F" Bombs and "S" bombs...even in the softer Urban songs. Thursday morning there was non-stop hip hop. More "F" bombs and "N" words even. By the afternoon they were back to the softer A/C -and today -"Just A Girl" by No Doubt. I was thinking maybe they were taking a cue from XHPRS.. ("Willy FM") - -but if another group is going to lease XEWW, it doesn't appear that it's happened yet. The AC music is on the air now (Saturday morning 12:50am)...The days of Mexican radio (except for the LMA stations in San Diego) seem to be numbered. Back in the day, Clear Channel had to divest itself of the LMA stations. 4 Mexican FMs and 690. Right now they're playing "Build A B*tch" - -uncensored. Would be easier to understand the words if the bandwidth were opened up a little. It was followed by "Montero" - uncensored again. Interesting.

I can’t understand all the cuss words because the audio is so muffled

In Boise Idaho.
Bad conditions tonight but when they do fade up the audio's really pretty good.
You are right, days ago I listened listening via SDR in Santa Clarita, California (http://kj6eo.com:8901/) without problems and clear during the day, I think the CFE electric bill got a little high. I would not doubt that they are operating with a lower power
