XHMORE 98.9 FM Is Stunning

Well, something must be up. Maybe they're planning something else, and with Labor Day around the corner we could be in for a possible surprise.

We have way too many Spanish-languaged stations here.

The Tijuana / San Diego market is 4.9 million, with 1.9 million being in Tijuana, as well as 950,000 Hispanics in San Diego.

So the total population of the metro is nearly 60% Hispanic.

So... define "too many" again in this context.

David is right. Anglos moved in; but Hispanics and American Indians were here first. Are there too many Spanish-language stations (and Spanish is a language, not a format ....)
With the highest English broadcast bumping 6 percent ... probably a yes.

Last weekend, I had lunch with some folks who had 12 plus shares -- and at one time, a solid 60. Impossible? Not then. Perhaps now ....

Let the marketplace decide.

13 to answer your question.

If I counted correctly, there are 62 stations in San Diego County and the Municipalities of Tijuana and Rosarito.

60% of the market is Hispanic. On the Tijuana side, essentially 100% are Spanish primary speakers, and of the over 900,000 in SD County, about 60% are Spanish primary and an additional 20% are bilingual.

So that means that half the market is Spanish speaking. That means there should be around 30 stations in Spanish...

Should be?

All you're looking at is demographics. How about you look at ratings.

While it is tough, we can combine the mixed methodologies of INRA with Arbitron and get an idea of the usage of Spanish language vs. English language stations. And that would indicate about half of the stations should be in Spanish.

Interesting stunting on the station, they're going to various locations in Tijuana and finding everyone they can to record their own 30 second shoutout. And when I mean shoutout, people are saying stuff like "I'm giving away my gym equipment, just email me and it's yours" and "Good luck 98.9 in returning to the airwaves. I sell tacos in the Zona Rio". If I heard correctly, musical programming will commence on September 30th. So that's one entire month of just shoutouts. Fans on their Facebook page are already complaining saying "QUEREMOS ROCK!", translated into English as "WE WANT ROCK!"

8 of the Top 10 stations in the market are English speaking??

If I have the 98.9 signal, I come back in an English format...and right at KMYI, KHTS or XHRM !!

You are only looking at the San Diego ratings... if we are evaluating what is appropriate for a Mexican licensed station in Mexico's 6th largest market, the choices require looking at the Tijuana ratings, too.

KMYI is a grandfathered superpower station that was once KFSD. XHMOR does not have the signal to compete in the San Diego County market. 77 kw at about 700 feet vs. 50 kw at 233 feet HAAT... no contest there.

I was looking at Wikipedia website. Is MORE-FM 98.9 going to be Spanish News/Talk instead of Rock en Espanol?

September 1 has come and gone.

DE-

So, Ad buyers are buying for the Tijuana market too? If so, didn't know that?

And if that's the case, why isn't that done in the L.A/IE markets...as most of the Mt. Wilson signals cover most of the IE?
