You know you have been working in radio too long when...

you call somebody and they say that they can't hear you. And your first response is "check, check...1, 2, 1, 2". They finally do hear you and they ask you what in the hell you are doing.

I'm just saying.

You long for the days when you had turntables, reel-to-reel production with splicing tape and razor blades (with white residue on them for some reason), and an owner that was actually in the building...

You know you have been working in radio too long when....you can use the bathroom in three minutes or less!

...during a commercial break in the TV show you get up and look at the phone to see if it's ringing. Yes, Im guilty!

...you long for the Glory Days of New Orleans Radio thirty years ago...oh wait...that's almost everyone on this board.

...you know that WRNO actually meant something instead of insipid talk from people who got fired and couldn't make it in other markets and who, after over a year, still can't pronounce names properly.

...you remember when the signal at 92.3 actually had some ratings.

...you remember when 690 was really MIGHTY and not the charade it is now.

when you realize that working in radio is not any fun anymore and go work for Kroger and make more money than you ever did in 25 years of radio.
But hey, we got free t-shirts and free movie passes.
I'm just saying, it aint never gonna be like it was.

Hey Carmentor I take offense to your coments about WRNO. I take great pride in my work as I have perfected my " idiotic and empty brainless presentation " into an art form. I entertain my vast audience ;D with brillant wit and serious debate. I can't help it if my genius is sprinlked with a touch of madness. I demand an " I'm sorry". We explore all issues on my weekend gig.

I was floored by your comments and hurt very badly. You swine ! Embrace the Gerry V Show for what it is......a desperate cry for help !!!

Gerry V - I'm Sorry. I had a senior moment. I would never consider lumping you in with the swill that is John Osterlind and Castner & Wallensky.

Please, please, please, I humbly beg your forgiveness.

...when the song on the radio or jukebox starts to fade, and you clear your throat. :-[
Actually, Jack Parnell told me Shirley busted him for that when they were on a driving vacation. And he told me that when we were at WHBQ. And that was more than (Drake Q-15 tymp, establish, then fade) Forty years ago...today. :D

Carmentor ! The pain is just to much . I'm ruined. You ripped the joy from doing TalkRadio. The happiness i found behind the mic was joyous. Now I am merely a wasted human being waundering the French Quarter holding the talk making believe i'm taking calls on the air.
Live with the guilt. ;D ( Camera pulls back with wide overhead shot showing the V man walking alone...mumbling to himself as people simply walk by and whisper.." He used to be somebody ") oh the shame of it all !!

PS you've been in radio to long when you walk around the mall talking to yourself.." lets go to the phones " and you do a talk show doing all the voices.

You've been in radio too long when you are listening to a radio station in the car, an "oldie" comes on, and you can still see the type of cart it was on, wheel spinning, in your mind... or you can see the label spinning, for those who couldn't afford the music-length carts!

I can tell you when equipment has been around too long when the WGSO board came out of Causeway and W. Esplanade, and other stuff! Made the move to Heritage Plaza, then to Slidell. OUCH!!

You can't pay your car note or electricity but you have free food from Outback twice a week.

You balk at having to pay a cover.

(Note: mindless jibbers of a previous 20 year career)

You have been out of the business and still don't miss it for over five years.

The cart carousel goes nuts and there is no eng on duty ( ... while your working on the FM station (Nite shift) and the AM is on the fritz; during the last puff on a cig; while your standing out the back door realizing it's closing and you forgot the new code.).

Re-Indexing the (darn, can't remember the automation system's name ... ducell ... duret ... it was French) system at midnight and totally screwing it up. (dalet)

You actually take a date with a regular caller.

You enjoy the company of the remote groupies.

Saturday's lunch is being brought by the LATE sales rep.

You left the business, started your own (other biz) and still ain't makin' money! But it still pays better and it still makes you happy!

This might be the first time, in 5 years, I (might) miss RADIO.

Good Luck to all of you, see ya' soon.

I have been out of radio for 19 years now. But still to this day canot listen to my ipod without cringing at the long fades and momentary silence between songs. It reminds me of those terrible old automation systems that for some inexplicable reason would freeze. I got in trouble more than once when the boss caught me kicking those damned cart carousels. Another thing that comes to mind when I hear those long fades is "oh, oh...sounds like that dude has his girlfriend in the control room" ;D

Amen to that!
