Now excuse me, it's time for my Ben-Gay rubdown.

grant, I don't know how to tell you this, but...

‘Mr. Wizard’ is dead. www.nytimes.com/2007/06/13/arts/13herbert.html

I hear that he interned for you once. Too bad, the two of you could really teach them smart alecky kids a thing or two!

Drizzle Drazzle Druzzle Drun...Time for this one to come home.
Thanks, JD, I'll mourn in silence.

Uh oh... Guys last night I had a dream I was attending a NAB Radio convention, where the whole product display department consisted of cart machines and open reel decks. :-[

YIKES!!!

'The Power Of Love' (1985, the same year as 'We Are The World', 'All She Wants To Do Is Dance', St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion) and TONS of other killer tunes) should be a staple on Hot AC and/or AC stations today.

Our AC powerhouse (KOST 103.5 LA) does play it from time to time, and since eighties music has been increasing on oldies stations nationwide (alongside a simultaneous drop in the amount of pre-Beatlemania oldies) hearing 'TPOL' on an oldies station is at least asign that that station is 'evolving'.

I am just loving reading all you guys moaning that sigh of the lederly as you approach 34, 35, 37, 38. I'll be 60 next month and trust me, it truly is all good. I remember when we had no TV. Radio was the main source of everything. My first record was an Elvis Presley record (Heartbreak hotel, I think.....they say that at my age the mind is the second thing to go........I don't remember what the first was). I got started in radio in 1966 and we used turntables to play 45's and edited "tape" with a razor blade........oh yeah, and radio was a lot more fun than what it's become.

I'm nippin' on your butt age-wise, Bob...you neglected to mention that to get to the radio station, we had to walk up hill in 5 feet of snow. Both ways. And we LIKED IT!!!!

And you old radio dinosaurs buried your $1.25 an hour money in
the Mason jar in the backyard, so you could eventually purchase
that asbestos laden dream house with aluminum wiring
didn't you?? ;) :D :D

Admit it....

Wrong Mr Wizard ;) The one you quoted was the cartoon show (oh heck, whats was that character's name?? Some tortise?). Mr Wizard who passed was the live TV star on NBC back in the 50s and 60s

But does KLUV play the "Ron Chop-man" special version of "The Power of Love" sans guitar solo?
Sorry, that still bugs me to this day. >>vent<< I feel better now and will go back to my corner.

Yes, it was Tudor Turtle. I just kept hearing "Help me, Mr. Wizard!"...
and that crystal radio system I described came from the old cub scout handbook...I left out the rubber eraser and safety pin the kit called for.

on the topic: I'm sure the research consultants know better than me, but I think a good song is a good song, no matter when it was recorded, or when the listener was in high school. My kids K-LUV their oldies, cause they hate country, rap, hard rock and most everything else on the radio.

My favorite turtle...Mickey Mud Turtle..Why is there so little info about Mickey and Amanda (KFJZ Channel 11)??

Well, cuz it's been 47 years ago now, and you won't find many folks that even know KTVT was once KFJZ! Paul Camfield (Bill's son) has a website with some old Channel 11 archives on it, plus an Icky Twerp tribute. I've got some generic info on my site as well, but the site's still down for now. I tell ya, you guys ignore me on the board when I suggest a get-together or something, but you'll regret one day when those folks who lived and molded this industry are gone. I hear from old KFJZ/KTVT people every so often, so there's several still around...perhaps it's time to organize a reunion AND invite the fans/viewers/listeners to come as well.

Hey I'm just glad KLUV finally started playing a stereo version of "Fun Fun Fun". Nice to hear it unleashed and alive sounding. Can "I Saw Her Again" be next? Hopefully they toss those awful mono versions of "Get Off My Cloud" and "Satisfaction".

Bruce,
Finally found a stereo "Fun Fun Fun" that doesn't fade 30 seconds early, thanks to a collegue on the west coast. "I Saw Her Again" will stay mono on KLUV until there's a stereo version that's not out of phase on mono radios. "Satisfaction IS stereo....a tighter stereo mix....the guitar is in the center....makes it sound more like the single we all remember. The stereo "Get Off My Cloud" just sounds too different form the single and we couldn't figure a good sounding 'tight mix'. I am a bit conflicted on that one though....I really don't like the mono version either, even though it's from the very lastest 'remastered' Stones collection. It's still distorted.

John,

Get ahold of Rob Drachler at JonesTM. Chances are they have what you need. They've been a wonderful music source for us at KEOM.

And even a good number today wont remember that KFJZ/KTVT was an independant and not CBS affiliated or owned (not to mention that 97.1 was sister to 11 back in the old days...)
