Youngstown's New Talk Station

Does anybody know what's going on with this station? the afternoon show that was on all last week has not been on, it's been a mix of car shows cooking show and smooth jazz shows and the station has been off the air after 7pm. The web stream isn't working either.

I got the webstream to work at home last week, but havent tried this week.

Cant access the website at work....blocked by IT and labeled as "suspicious" Hahahaha

Station goes off the air at sundown, which should explain your nighttime problem.

I'm sure someone actually *in* Youngstown could give more authoritative answers though.

The site http://www.talk1540wycl/ redirects to a free web host provider. Mr. Cato is getting what he (isn't) paying for. He should have paid Chris to put up a basic site for him similar to Chris' Office Live pages.

Chris' original sites are pretty basic, but MUCH more professional than what Mr. Cato has up.

Thank you for the link and info!

R-I's Tom Taylor picked up on this thread and had that story this morning.

But he didn't see my item posted Tuesday, which in a "Quick Note" at the end notes that Louie is no longer on WGFT. They are now running the 3rd hour of Laura Ingraham at 11, and the previously missing hour of Dave Ramsey at noon.

I presume Louie's now on WYCL (noon-3), and have heard that he is, but I'm having the same problem with their web stream as everyone else. Can anyone in the market double check this afternoon? I won't be anywhere near WYCL's signal...

A LOT of info on Louie Free in this pre-sentencing story in the Vindy:

http://www.vindy.com/news/2010/jun/10/letters-to-magistrate-keep-radio8217s-fr/

Free, the self-employed host of “Brainfood from the Heartland” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday on WGFT-AM 1330, has pleaded guilty to failure to file for 2004, 2005 and 2006, when he earned $74,150, $46,810 and $17,945, respectively.

Indeed, he does broker the time, and presumably sells spots (I haven't heard the show in a while) to make back his money (and then some?).

The internet feed was down due to a storm. AT&T replaced the lines. Working again, if the folks will leave it alone.

No other comments on the stations format etc. from me.

You slay me.

The question mark is there for a reason. :D

One assumes it is now his only income, as the story calls him "the self-employed host of..." and there's no indication of other income from other sources being brought up in his court proceedings.

His unreported income did dip pretty dramatically in year three.

seems like much ado about nothing

Oh, not really. I just like to have a little fun with Louie Free. He's an oddity radio-wise, and we've mentioned him before. His station (WGFT until this week) has a puny share, but he hangs in there somehow.

I wonder how much WGFT charged him, and maybe he's getting a better rate from Mr. Cato. And subtract that from whatever he sells...can he make money?

I was getting 1570 pretty good most of the day when I was having trouble with 1540. Couldn't get either earlier today, but I tried in late morning I think (or maybe even yesterday). 1540 is apparently not programming the post-sunset hours on the stream, which you did with "The Farm".

1570 still sounds good, BTW. Don't know what Jim has added yet, but it's night and day vs. 1540...at least, the last time I heard it.

1540's stream is working fine this morning, and formatically, it sounds like an actual radio station.

It doesn't sound like a talk station this morning.

Playing in the 10-noon slot listed for operator Philip Cato is a Massachusetts based syndicated jazz show called "Jazz Variations with Tonia King".

http://www.jazzvariations.com/

The show has a handful of over air affiliates...WYCL apparently being the first AM.

Looks like the 10-noon slot is really "whatever Philip wants to put on the air". He's selling brokered shows...there were promos for at least two of them in the short time I heard the station, including one airing 10-noon one day (a week?).
