Your 2010 Wish List?

I want to hear from all of you what you want to try to get this year. I've got some 35 states to go (most of East Coast, which will be hard, my farthest has been Ohio or Texas) and eastern Canada (Manitoba is my farthest) and other provinces in Mexico (I've only gotten to Baja California North).

The good ones on my wish list would maybe try to get
530 Cuba
570 Radio Reloj
630 Anything good if I just had a better nuller!
650 WSM
660 WFAN (have gotten to KTNN once, need to have patience)
670 WSCR (have heard KBOI, KMZQ and some Toyota commercial around 6PM at night, but need to hear an ID!
700 WLW (I WISH I got WLW!)
710 WOR New York
720 WGN
730 XEX
750 WSB
760 WJR
770 WABC
810 WGY/WHB (will be really hard :))
840 WHAS
880 Come on, where's WCBS!?!
890: WLS
1000: WMVP, but will be really, really hard since it has a null to our area
1010: CFRB/WINS
1020: KDKA
1110: I've gotten KFAB, but what about WBT?
1100: WTAM
1130: KWKH/WBBR
1170: KFAQ Tulsa needed!!!
1200: WOAI
1210: WPHT
1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450, 1490: needs a LOT of patience, but I want to get something really far out (250 miles+)
1520: KOKC
1570: XERF, sadly I can't get it however some people in the NW have got it
1630: KCJJ Iowa City, IA
1640: Anything other than KDZR, KDIA and the spanish from SLC
1650: KCNZ Iowa
1690: WVON/WMLB/WPTX
1700: KKLF would be nice, but I've gotten KVNS and XEPE

So, what's on your wish list?

From Coldwater, MI

AM:
640- KFI
680- KNBR
690- CBU
720- KDWN
740- KCBS
780- KKOH
810- KGO
840- KXNT
890- KDXU
1000- KOMO
1010- CBR? (Calgary)
1030- KTWO
1070- KNX
1130- CKWX

FM:
Not really much to wish for here. I confirmed my first 2x Es and my first translator Es. I also ID'ed several distant (80-100 miles) translators I previously thought were impossible to ID in '09. Didn't cover much ground as far as new states, but I did get Quebec via shortish Es.

I guess if there's one thing i'd like to accomplish in '10, it would be to get at least one new state (preferably Idaho or Arizona) and get my 1,500th new log. I'm at 1,362 right now.

Wow, Lawppy - you're certainly ambitious! Some of those western catches would require incredible propagation conditions combined with the daytime pattern left on. Nonetheless, your list is basically the same as mine - except that I would drop KNX, having already snagged them.

To that, I would add ANYTHING trans-Atlantic (MW or LW). I have never had the good fortune of picking up anything from across the pond....not even when I lived on the east coast.

Off topic, but about DXing

I had a dream last night where there was a great E-skip opening. I remember getting stuff as far away as Mexico City and Kansas. I also remember getting a Mexican on Ch. 5 clear as a bell! I remember that my first log was a Mexican on either 88.1 or 88.3, and KIGN Burns WY on 101.9. Soon, I logged every Es logging before waking up. :D :D ;D :D
I wish there was REALLY a great Es opening like in my dream!

Also, another to add to the wish list: 880 KRVN Lexington, NE.

-crainbebo

I do not have any station on my wish list, but my main wish is living in the Midwest or the Great Plains in the vast open land to hear DX on both AM and FM.

To go on a "DXpedition" (a location as far as possible from any nearby transmitters, probably somewhere in the Rockies). When it gets warmer, of course!

For 2010 I wish the FCC would come to its senses and BAN IBOC on the AM dial. It sure messes up audio quality for local listeners and severely hampers DX listening to the clear channels at night. Here in Central KY, there are times will WLW is unlistenable at night (80 miles away) because WOR's IBOC trash is creaming the WLW signal... I am know there are other cases of this sort of interference for analog listeners.

I'm surprised you haven't heard KRVN as I've received it many times on the west coast. Of course you do have an 880 in the Seattle area. Do they ever sign off for maintenance?

From Tampa, I'd still like to get KCBS. According to their nighttime pattern map, their signal also goes in this direction and is not in their null.

From here, 740 isn't that crowded with only WYGM and KTRH with sometimes some weaker station in the background. Could that be it? I'll sure need an official ID.

680 is WAY too jammed here to get KNBR.

Also, I'd like to say I heard a station from Canada down here. That would be cool!

Any suggestions on what stations might have a chance?

Oh, me too! The first one I'd want to go on would be the east coast of Newfoundland. That would be excellent!

Count me as a bit surprised too. I've gotten KRVN as far west as Reno and it comes in very well in UT and ID. There was a semi-local station on 880 that was from the Salinas, CA area which made me unable to get KRVN from the Bay Area though. Farther north or south and I might have.

The 880 in the Seattle market supposedly nulls to the SE and NW with the main lobe SW - not sure whether crainbebo can null it.

If I null it (which is rare) I get KWIP Dallas, OR (Regional Mexican), KJJR Whitefish, MT (News/Talk) and another News/Talk, probably KCMX Phoenix, OR in the background. No WCBS or KRVN.

Anything west coast on AM, plus WFLF and WOKV (doubtful with WLW hash). Anything else from FL. FM, a good eSkip opening, and I think we're overdue for a super tropo opening. Better equipment and antennas would be nice too.

I have heard both WFLF and WOKV here in Lexington. WFLF is sometimes heard in the "wee" hours mixing with WAUK. WLW's inexcusable IBOC Trash does make 690 a problem, but I have heard WOKV around Sunrise and Sunset on daytime pattern. In SW Ohio, you have both WKRC and WLW to deal with making both of these stations tough to hear.

I can't let the cat out of the bag, because as the nights get shorter (already!) the catch will be less likely.

BTW, I'm getting het on 1566...ooops, did I say too much? ;D

Also, just for the sake of nostalgia, I've been trying to bag BBC WS on 648, with no luck so far.

From Eastern Pennsylvania

My 2010 Wish List woud be:

640 KFI
660 KTNN
730 CHMJ -I usually get CKAC and a mix of other stations.
770 KKOB
810 WHB
880 KRVN
1030 KTWO
1070 KNX
1110 KFAB -I get nothing but WBT here.
1130 CKWX
1160 KSL -I only get WCCS, WOBM, and WYLL here.
1540 ZNS-1 -A mix of CHIN, KXEL, and sometimes WDCD is what I get.
1650 KCNZ -Usually only CINA, CJRS, and WHKT.
1660 KXOL -Mainly WBCN, WCNZ, and WWRU.
1660 KXTR

Do you think I can get any of these?

You might try for KFAB about an hour BEFORE sunrise. I have heard it very clearly here in Central KY around 6:30-7:00 AM. They apparently are going to their day pattern early....or something. Yesterday, I heard KRVN about a half hour AFTER my sunset BEFORE they switched to the night pattern which throws almost all the signal Westward. WHB has been heard here around Sunrise and Sunset hours. The others are quite rare to me and I have NEVER heard KKOB here...

I *FINALLY* knocked KNX off of my wish list last night. I heard them with their infamous traffic sounder, local highway mentions AND the all-important KNX call letter mentions. They are 1,890 miles from my location, which is a new distance record for AM AND FM. Also my first California station.

I took a look at the actual nighttime patterns of some of the stations on my wish list and a lot of them are very unlikely in my area. KDWN, KXNT and KOMO throw their power away from Chicago (and S. Michigan for that matter) and most of them just plain do not favor me.

I have narrowed it down to two stations that I have a more realistic shot of hearing..

690- CBU- Vancouver, BC- 1,894 miles
680- KNBR- San Francisco, CA- 1,987 miles

690 may be difficult with Montreal and WLW I-BLOC and 680 may be hindered by WSCR I-BLOC. 680 is pretty much an open freq. at night with only weak signals from Toronto and Raleigh, so KNBR is probably my best one. Montreal's 690 is prone to open carriers at times, so MAYBE one of these nights I can sniff out a faint CBC mention or possibly hear the famous CBC news sounder during one of those open carrier periods.

I know this is 3 weeks after New Year's but I'll go ahead and spell out my wishlist.

From East Moline, Illinois (Quad Cities USA), this is my 2010 (and beyond) wishlist:

640- KFI Los Angeles, CA
*660- KTNN Window Rock, AZ
*670- KBOI Boise, ID
680- KNBR San Francisco, CA
700- KALL North Salt Lake City, UT
710- KIRO Seattle, WA and KSPN Los Angeles, CA
*720- KDWN Las Vegas, NV (also, KFIR Sweet Home, OR, WRZN Hernando, FL, and several daytimers on 720 in the eastern U.S. would do)
740- KCBS San Francisco, CA
760- KFMB San Diego, CA
*770- KKOB Albuquerque, NM
*780- KKOH Reno, NV
790- KABC Los Angeles, CA (highly unlikely as it's only 5 kW and there are plenty of other stations closer by creating a "regional mess" although KABC does use the same 5 kW ND pattern unlimited time (both day and night))
810- KGO San Francisco, CA (I often hear WHB K.C. during SR and SS skip while it's on daytime power and pattern and WGY Schenectady, NY is a regular here almost every night)
830- KLAA- Orange, CA (Los Angeles)
840- KXNT- Las Vegas, NV
850- WKNR Cleveland, OH, WTAR Norfolk, VA, WEEI Boston, MA, and WREF Ridgefield, CT (the last one is daytime only to protect the nighttime groundwave coverage of the other three stations and the nighttime skywave coverage of KOA Denver, Co; however, WREF and the others are well outside the 750 mile raius of KOA's protected skywave service area)
870- KPRM Park Rapids, MN (my best bet on this one would have to be SR or SS skip while it's still on its 25 kW daytime signal; its nighttime signal is only 1 kW and probably nulled in this direction to protect WWL New Orleans, LA.)
*890- KDXU St. George, UT
910- KWDZ Salt Lake City, UT (probably asking for a bit much as this is a regional channel and well over 1000 miles away)
950- WNTD Chicago, IL, WWJ Detroit, MI, WNZZ Montgomery, AL, WTLN Orlando, FL, and KJR Seattle, WA.
970- WFLA Tampa, FL (WFLA has a respectable amount of power, 25 kW day and 11 kW night)
980- KFWB Los Angeles, CA (probably won't happen from here)
1000- KOMO Seattle, WA
1010- WINS New York, NY
*1020- KCKN Roswell, NM
*1030- KTWO Casper, WY
1040- WYSL Avon, NY
1050- WEPN New York, NY
1070- KNX Los Angeles, CA (sounds like I at least have a shot at this one after several people on this board catching it from the east coast)
1080- KRLD Dallas, TX, WTIC Hartford, CT, and KFXX Portland, OR
1090- WBAL Baltimore, MD
*1100- KNZZ Grand Junction, CO and KFAX San Francisco, CA
1110- WBT Charlotte, NC
*1120- KPNW Eugene, OR
1130- KFAN Minneapolis, MN, WISN Milwaukee, WI, WDFN Detroit, MI, and KSDO San Diego, CA
1170- KCBQ San Diego, CA, KLOK San Jose, CA, and KPUG Bellingham, WA (those are all difficult as KJOC Davenport, IA on 1170 is a local here and the three afforementioned pacific coast 1170's would have to be on daytime pattern and/or power at night (only one at a time), combined with the absence of interference from I-B clears KFAQ Tulsa, OK, and WWVA Wheeling, WV, and KJOC itself would quite possibly have to be off the air as well in order to accomplish any of the afforementioned pacific coast 1170's from here)
*1180- KOFI Kalispell, MT
1190- KEX Portland, OR
*1210- KGYN Guymon, OK
1230- WJBC Bloomington, IL and/or KFJB Marshalltown, IA (both would be quite possible if it weren't for local WFXN Moline, IL as well as the graveyard mess on this channel at night)
1240- KBIZ Ottumwa, IA (would be possible if it weren't for graveyard mess, adjacent channel splatter from WFXN, and other possible factors)
1270- WWCA Gary, IN, WXYT Detroit, MI, KWEB Rochester, MN, and WWWI Baxter, MN (Brainerd) (note that as I have stated in the past on the "AM Band" boards I started in December 2009, I do have a local on this channel; WKBF Rock Island, IL, which has its towers near my location, and WKBF would need to be on either super-reduced power or off-the-air in order to hear anything else on the 1270 kHz channel)
1340- WJOL Joliet, IL, WSOY Decatur, IL, WXFN Muncie, IN, and KROC Rochester, MN (this is another local ("graveyard") channel and nearby KROS Clinton, IA, which has a reasonably good signal during the day, often gets buried in the graveyard mess at night, but is sometimes just on top of the graveyard mess. The others listed above are possible under the "Right" conditions but are tough catches as they are all usually buried in the graveyard mess)
1400- KADR Elkader, IA (normally all I hear is WGIL Galesburg, IL in the day and GY mess at night; however, I just know KADR is possible under the "right" conditions, at night or SR or SS skip (Elkader is only a little over 100 air miles northwest of my location))
1450- KATE Albert Lea, MN, KFIZ Fon Du Lac, WI; anything other than nearby WKEI Kewanee, IL and KMRY Cedar Rapids, IA for a change would be acceptable
1490- WGEZ Beloit, WI, WPNA Oak Park, IL (Chicago), KXLQ Indianola, IA, KRIB Mason City, IA, WDAN Danville, IL, and WZOE Princeton, IL.
1500- WFED Washington, D.C.
1510- KGA Spokane, WA
1520- WWKB Buffalo, NY (this one will probably be difficult as theirr directional pattern nulling the west is the same during the day as at night. Will need a good opening on the frequency and awesome conditions that favor WWKB. Has anybody else in the midwest, plains, or the western states ever picked up WWKB (formerly WKBW)?)
1530- KFBK Sacramento, CA
1540- WDCD Albany, NY (perhaps this is what sometimes interferes with KXEL at night??)
1560- KNZR Bakersfield, CA
1620- KOZN Bellevue, NE, WDND South Bend, IN, WNRP Pensacola, FL, KSMH West Sacramento, CA (Sacramento), and WTAW College Station, TX
1630- CHYW Ottawa, ON, KKGM Fort Worth, TX, KRND Fox Farm, WY, and WRDW Augusta, GA
1640- KBJA Sandy, UT, KDIA Vallejo, CA, KDZR Lake Oswego, OR, KFXY Enid, OK, and WTNI Biloxi, MS (I have already heard WKSH Sussex/Milwaukee, WI)
1650- KFOX Torrance, CA (Los Angeles), KBJD Denver, CO, KSVE El Paso, TX, WHKT Portsmouth, VA, CJRS Montreal, QC, and CINA Mississauga, ON
1660- KRZI Waco, TX, KTIQ Merced, CA, KXOL Brigham City, UT, KXTR Kansas City, KS, WBCN Charlotte, NC, WCNZ Marco Island, FL, WGIT Canovanas, PR, and WWRU Jersey City, NJ
1670- KHPY Moreno Valley, CA, KNRO Redding, CA, and WFSM Dry Branch, GA (the other one, WTDY Madison, WI, is obviously the closest and most likely from my location)
1680- This one will be difficult with the new local TIS that is now on the air on this channel. Any of the six existing broadcast stations in the continental U.S.A. will do.
1690- Anything in the US and Canada other than nearby WVON Berwyn, IL (Chicago)
1700- WEUP Huntsville, AL, KVNS Brownsville, TX, KKLF Richardson, TX, and XEPE Tecate, BC (Mexico)

*Indicates a Class II-A ("breakdown") clear-channel station in the west which protects a Class I-A clear-channel counterpart in the east. So far, the only one I've heard in KRVN Lexington, NE on 880 kHz. I just know it would be possible to hear 1210 KGYN, 770 KKOB, 1020 KCKN, and 1030 KTWO during SR or SS skip (or even nighttime if switch isn't flipped) while they're still on daytime pattern, and under the right conditions. Those stations aren't all that much further away than KRVN (the closest II-A station to me). Also, I understand that people on this board from the Chicago and Memphis areas have heard KTNN from Window Rock, AZ on 660 kHz.

KGO will be extremely tough, as it has a north-south pattern, protecting WGY.
