Your 2018 general TV predictions (or guesses)

I do think that some of the predictions seen on this thread is what some of these users are dreaming and hoping for.

What to likely expect in 2018 for Television.

4. - In the event that the Disney/Fox deal is completed this year the Fox Network might likely announce a phase out of scripted programming from it's lineup but don't expect any cancellation of The Simpsons which either in 2020 wraps up production or moves to either ABC, A Disney owned cable network or Hulu.

7. - The Cable News Channels will continue on the same direction they are taking right now with Fox News bitching and moaning about the Democrats with CNN and MSNBC bitching and moaning about what Trump is doing (No change from 2017).
8. - MyNetwork TV getting shut down in 2020 will be announced in the event that the Disney/Fox deal is completed this year.

10. - The Major Networks and Cable Channels end up ferociously competing with Amazon (Prime TV), Google (YouTube and YouTube Red), Netflix and Hulu for Viewers.

There's what I can think of but I will add some longer term predictions below.

What to likely expect beyond 2018 for Television.

1. - MyNetwork TV shuts down in 2020.
2. - Disney will make sure that The Simpsons will live on for years to come in the form of merchandising and the rebroadcasts of every episode in existence on Television and Internet Streaming Media.

There's some predictions that will be realistic.

Ion could get the brand "My Network TV" away from Fox Television stations.

More people will get their breaking news from CBSN, Newson and Newsy

--ABC airs a special Christmas movie-length episode of Netflix's "Fuller House"

.

ABC can't do that because by then ABC/Disney will have majority ownership and full control of Hulu once the Fox/Disney deal is approved by the SEC and DOJ. I say more like the Seth MacFarlane shows will team up with Ducktales for a Christmas special on Hulu. Why would ABC air a Netflix show like Full House.

3. - Super Bowl LII will likely have a lower number of total viewers compared to the previous year but it will still be the most watched Television event of the year and don't expect the major advertisers looking to pull out (Unless the bottom falls out of it's ratings or the ratings keep declining every year until 2025 to 2030).

If the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl, I have a feeling that NBC will have second thoughts about its current trajectory of its Boston experiment and attempt to but WFXT from Cox (or make a swap) after complaints from all of Boston’s over-the-air viewers.

Sinclair will start up its own broadcast network similar to MyNetworkTV on the company's main channels. Once the Sinclair/Tribune merger is complete, then the company will displace some of FOX and CW affiliates to another channel so that it will become a new affiliate tor its new broadcast network.

Sinclair looks forward to return to full time radio broadcasting by purchasing iHeartMedia and iHeartRadio. In addition, this would mean that Sinclair will have the rights for iHeartRadio award shows including their music festival that are aired on the CW as well as the exclusive platform for today's emerging artists.(Sinclair already owns several CW stations across the country, including one in NEPA)

After Disney's acquistion of Fox, the next step is to purchase MGM. With this purchase, Disney will own the rights of huge franchises such as Rocky and James Bond. This will be in addition to the properties which was owned by Fox. Imagine James Bond appearing in a Marvel movie?

ESPN's Monday Night Football to be cut to only the last eight weeks of the NFL season due to falling ratings. It will mostly feature teams that have playoff implications. On the other hand, Thursday Night football will stay as is for the whole season.

The upcoming season of American Idol on ABC will have lasted only one season because of falling ratings. Therefore, the show will have the worst ratings season since it was last aired on FOX.

ABC will announce later this year that Grey's Anatomy will be ending after fifteen seasons sometime in the 2018-19 season.

Al Michaels will announce that he will retire after the 2018 NFL season.

Smaller cable networks(such as fyi, Fuse, etc.) will shut down before the end of the year.

Amazon will buy QVC from Liberty Media and relaunch its sister HSN as AmazonTV.

TNT will announce that it will no longer air NBA games after the 2018-19 season, thus making ESPN an exclusive network for all games, including the All Star break.

Harry gets cancelled after only two seasons due to low ratings.

NBC announces the revival of The Apprentice, this time with a new host and also in a regular format. Contestants vying for a spot in a major acting role of an upcoming film from Universal.

So what do you think about my predictions?

Smaller cable networks(such as fyi, Fuse, etc.) will shut down before the end of the year.

My predictions for the networks that will fold will be Great American Country (after Discovery finishes the Scripps Networks deal), Pop, FM, and TheBlaze TV.

As for diginets, ThisTV will be merged into Charge! after losing many of its non Sinclair/Tribune affiliates. Luken Communications will fight for survival for the third time after many LPTV stations shut down because of the repack. Other smaller diginets such as The Country Network, LATV, and Tuff TV will also be endangered.

That's a pretty safe bet....GAC has basically become HGTV-2 in the last two years. I really don't see Discovery keeping the country branding. The channel has been dropped by a lot of major cable companies, including Comcast.

Around Knoxville, we're waiting to find out if the combined Scripps/Discovery will keep their Knoxville facility and employees. Best guess is yes due to lower labor costs and taxes.

While we're on the subject, all of these music-related channels, including the Viacom-owned CMT, MTV, and VH-1 are all struggling with viewership issues. Traditional music programming is simply not much of an attraction on TV, as it was 30 years ago. The new management at Viacom is advocating more reality-based programming on the music channels, but I still don't think it will provide the kind of ROI they need at a company that size. Its stock price hasn't improved at all in 2017.

Retro Television Network (Owned by Luken) has disappeared here in the Pittsburgh area this past October (6 days before Halloween) due to the Low power stations that carried it being shut down with 6 of those being shut down permanently due to the recent spectrum incentive auction and repack. I do see Luken being left with no choice at all except to start shuttering some of it's diginets in an attempt to stay afloat.

So what do you think about my predictions?
Sinclair have stated that they have no intentions of starting a broadcast network to rival the main 5 http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/sir...epshteyn-david-smith-news-1202504687/#respond

Do you think Discovery will shut GAC altogether or rebrand it? Maybe as Fine Living Network or HGTV2? Scripps seemed to be pushing this brand along with Food Network and Travel Channel.

I cant see Pop being shut really. It's only recently getting more investment with original shows and more of a focus? I read somewhere that it is one of the cable channels that is growing year on year.
As for FM, I don't know what that channel is meant to be or why it really exists. It meant to be anothing indie music channel but who really would look at independent musicians music videos. If it had pop/mainstream videos it would make more of an impact. It programming is so niche it would never find any audience. It also has some repeats of Fuse programming that is also very niche. I dont know what they were thinking when they rebranded it? Fuse is gone more mainstream in its programming at least with the programs it acquires with shows like Scrubs, Everybody Hates Chris and Sister Sister.

I'm going to double up on two of your predictions and say that one of the sexual harrassment charges involves either Jerry or Maury (or Steve Wilkos), or their shows' staff members and/or past guests.

Or maybe even Dr. Phil (regarding the sexual harrassment charges), or the charges from last week of drugs and booze on Dr. Phil's set take on more legs and leads to at least the cancellation of the Dr. Phil Show:

Maybe a scandal will mark the end of the Pawn Stars or some other cable reality series.

The only thing Pop has going for it is the Can-con cult show (bleep)’s Creek. That could move to CBS All Access or Hulu. I wonder if CBS brass have given thought of turning Pop into a linear simulcast of CBSN? That would probably trigger clauses in contracts with cable/satellite providers, which is the reason Sinclair isn’t planning on converting WGN America to a right-leaning news outlet.

FM has no reason to exist after the Fuse merger. Basically they’re showing the same trap-rap videos as Viacom’s BET Jams network.

With Discovery buying Scripps could we see some mergers/closures/rebrands of some channels? Still Scripps channels focus more on home improvement/DIY/Food/country living programming which the Discovery networks don't feature really.
They will hardly get rid of the established brands Discovery, ID, Science, TLC, Animal Planet, OWN or Velocity. Could the axe the Spanish networks or sell Discovery Family? American Heroes Channel, Discovery Life and Destination America get first run shows and have their own focus. All their networks have their own focus what is the need to axe any? Excluding the Spanish channels, OWN and Discovery Family (Part owned) Discovery Communications operate 9 cable channels in the US they operate 12 in the UK. Why would the choose to shut any completely? The Scripps networks have a different type of programming
Could the do something to gac (most likey get rid of music videos the other programs on that channel that air in primetime are stuff that Discovey would air). Maybe rebrand/rename to Fine Living Network. Scripps seemed to be pushing this brand worldwide along with Food Network and Travel Channel.
The other channel will problay be kept because it seems like Discovey is interested in all there channel except gac and would do great under the Discovey brandings

I could see Destination America being dropped because a lot of what they have are travel and food shows that would be similar to Food Network and The Travel channel.

I did focus on American culture such as food and travel but now the channel has since increased its focus on reality series devoted to paranormal topics and investigations (But I wonder how long this fad can last?)

Assuming NBC Boston does a good enough job of telling people where to tune OTA, complaints should be at a minimum.

And in the very near future, NBC Boston will have a "whole lotta splaining" to do, as its channel-sharing deal with WMFP comes to an end shortly and a new 25 year channel-sharing agreement begins with WGBX.

Details here:

Fox News Channel will have to deal with a certain number of Pundits leaving the Network for Sinclair and the rivalry between Pro-Trump audiences will heat up.

Fox Sports regional will have a certain number of pundits move to ESPN or have some of their pundits move to Fox Sports national edition.

But ESPN haven't been renewing, or cancelling contracts with several sports pundits/analysts. If they're cutting back on on-air talent, why would you think ESPN would be interested in bringing ones over from FOX?
