Your Radio Heros...Who Are They?

My radio heros are as follows I have always lived in the southeastern Alabama . My hereos include Late DJ'S Bill Smith, of Wkyd, Charlie Gilmore , WTVY radio, Others who are liveing include WBAM AND WLWI Don Day, Jeff Jackson of WKYD, Roy Fox who has been around being a dj at near about all country stations in wiregrass. These men here are true dj's not ones today to me that are just waiting to get paid .

Well this is gonna be cheesy since I've never been in radio... But there are two folks who've helped me keep an interest in radio after I began to sour on the quality of the people behind the mike. So forgive me if my guys aren't legends...

First and foremost, Don Geronimo (of WAVA and later Don and Mike show fame in DC). He was my first taste of a guy who truly loved the medium and fought the fight to have fun right up till he retired.

And second but not least, Richard Dixon (of WZRR morning show and later WAPI afternoons, then mornings again). His afternoon show at WAPI was proof that intelligent and funny could work together on talk radio.

An honorable mention should go to Coyote J Calhoun, the first guy I ever heard on the radio who didn't seem to be reading from liner notes. I think I first heard him doing oldies (?) on Cool 102 out of Jasper/Tuscaloosa.

Before i got into radio:

Bill "Birdman" Thomas
Larry Stevens
Rusty Aldridge
John Garrett

After:
Al connors
Rusty aldridge
Greg Budell
Rick Peters
Randy "Bubba" Culpepper
Mike Allen

Lets see before I got into radio

All the Q Jocks as in the when 103.7 was Q104 in Gadsden. The jocks made it fun to listen to the radio.

After getting into radio:

John Houston - One of the most talented production directors I ever had the pleasure of working with.

Dave Gilligan- Another great air talent

Bob DeCalro- I worked with him in Panama City. Great PD

Mickey Johnson- One of the best PD's I ever worked for. I am still learning from him about the business.

Mary K- Also a great PD she really takes the time to help upcoming talent grow in the business.

ok I admit maybe their not Legends like Rick Dee or Shadow Steven or WolfMan Jack but they influenced me

and I look forward to working with them again one day

The Shady Nation

Dave Hood at KGW - Portland was a big influence. These days, Farid Suleman is my inspiration---to get OUT of the business.

I guess it would be sad to say I didn't have any before I got into radio.

The person who 'wowed' me the most after I got into radio was Hawk Harrison
at WPAP. I used to sit in the studio with him several times a week just to watch
him do phones. I think that's one of the hardest things to do really well and he was
a master. I learned a lot from him.

Of course I have taken bits and pieces from a lot of people along the way.

listened to two guys in orlando growing up that made me want to get into radio....

john lander, now in boston
scott walker, was at the eagle in philly, last i heard was working in detroit.

they both sounded like they were having a blast.....they were both on WLOF am950 in the 70s and 80s.

  • As a listener . . .
    • Larry Stevens / Leslie Bailey / Rusty Aldridge (WHHY Waking Crew from the '80s)
    • Joe Marcus (he hosted Don Markwell's show while Don was PD at WLWI, and I had never heard 'liberal' talk radio)
    • Bill "Birdman" Thomas (Y102. 'nuff said)
    • Windle "Skipper" Jayroe (mostly on the Fox - made me proud to be a rock n' roll record nerd because he made listeners feel like it meant something)
    • John Garrett (various locations but had one of the best morning shows Montgomery ever had - it was "must listen" radio when he was on)

and who could forget Casey Kasem and Rick Dees? Legends of the top 40.

    After working in the business on a part-time full-time basis . . .
    • Dave "Doc" Kirby (my PD at WTBF, first one who gave me a chance after another DJ let me play records for the hour prior to sign-off one night)
    • Greg Budell (best jock on the air, period)
    • Mike Alan (with his pipes, anything can sound exciting)
    • Jim Roling (owner of WTBF, has kept a mom & pop station in the 'family' for over 60 years, who gave quality advice: "the only person who thinks you're funny is you, so stop laughing at inside jokes on the air")
    • Ralph Black (founded Troy Sports Network and called games for 25 years, but had high standards for quality on the air - I will never forget when he nearly destroyed a cart machine and reel-to-reel deck because someone had made a mistake on a spot that was supposed to air)
    • Russell Wells (now PD at WSVH in Savannah, but was once a co-worker; a huge influence on my personal musical tastes)

It goes without saying that Rick Peters and Terry Barber are heroes to us all at Bluewater Broadcasting!

Ron Clay
Shawn Roberts
Michael Lee Webb
John Barry
Future Bob
Duke
Wolfman
The Grease Man
& there are so many others.

Mike Cutchall (Wasnt on the air but an owner and one of the classiest people in this business.
