You're on the power line with Brother John

I remember this show years ago and I was wondering if someone can tell me when the show came about and ended, and who in Indiana ran the show?
Is Brother John still with us today?

The former WGLM in Lafayette ran it for a few years back in the late 90s/early 00s. WKHY ran it before GLM picked it up.

John Rivers is still with us. Up until recently, he and his wife did morning drive on K-Love and is supposed to be coming back to the network soon. He's also the host of a nationally-syndicated CCM countdown show...I can't remember the name of the show. As for Powerline, I'm not sure if its still in production.

At one time seemingly every top 40 ran it. I remember hearing it on WMEE at 3am and 9am, IIRC. The Southern Baptist Convention originated the show (who would have thunk) but I don't believe they are connected with it anymore.

QMIX ran the show on Sunday mornings for many years. Right up to the end, which was December 2007.
They stopped sending it out on CD as a cost-cutting measure, but it wasn't enough. I guess there weren't enough stations willing to snag it from an FTP site.
Powerline was produced/distributed by the broadcast division of the Southern Baptist Convention right up to the end.
John and Sherry Rivers also do/did the morning show on K-Love, and have for years, although the rumor mill is that they are off the air and there is a hint of scandal.
By the way, it anyone wants a copy of Powerline from 2005-2007, let me know. I have a stack of them headed for the trash.

Wow, great to see this thread - I was just telling a friend how I ran this show between our public affairs show and AT40 back in the day at the start of my "career." I loved it because it was a self-containted 30 minutes and I was free to get "stuff" done for half an hour, which I would follow with a song of my choosing, usually one not on our playlist (hey, what... I was a kid!) We had to run a song between the shows cause we only had the one turntable. Ah, the good ol' days.

Not all Southern Baptist (in fact about 75% of Southern Baptist have been CCM promoters over the last twenty years).... Stereotyping has never been favorable to the SBC's... The Radio-Television Commission developed and produced the show from their offices in Fort Worth... Jon was hand-picked to host the show using secular pop to pinpoint issues relevant to teens and college aged persons... It was the baby brother program to "Country Crossroads" and "Master Control", and was the big brother of their CCM show "On Track".... THE SBC Radio-TV Commission closed in late 2007 and early 2008...

Begun as the Radio Commission in 1941 by Baptist pioneer Samuel Lowe, the Fort Worth-based ministry later became the Radio and Television Commission when TV programming was added. The RTVC was dissolved and combined into the new North American Mission Board during the SBC's restructuring of its agencies in the 1990s. The television ministry, still based in Fort Worth, was spun off as FamilyNet after a merger with Jerry Falwell's cable TV ministry. But the radio programs, which once numbered almost a dozen, remained separate and administered by NAMB, which is based in suburban Atlanta.

The remaining five 30-minute radio programs, in addition to "Strength for Living," are "MasterControl," a newsmagazine aired on about 350 stations; "Country Crossroads," a country-music show aired on about more than 400 stations; "Powerline," adult contemporary music, about 400 stations; and "On Track," contemporary Christian music, about 225 stations.

About 1,250 total radio stations air NAMB programs, since many stations carry more than one. All except "On Track" are more than 35 years old. The Media Technology Group also produces radio spots, likewise distributed free.

The first host on Powerline was Lee Randall. Lee left the show to become Program Director of KTSA in San Antonio and later, a successful radio consultant. Both Lee and John Rivers had been deejays at KILT in Houston, prior to taking over Powerline.

JIMBO.. I'll pay to have them shipped.... The Southern Baptist Covention did away with the Radio-TV Commission and that put an end to the production.. Jon is a long time aquaintance, and much deep prayer is needed... The K-Love folks are like any other Biblical Based group.. They want to restore and we do not know all of the details, and really don't need to know.. "20 The Countdown Maganize" is the countdown show he does with the top twenty Contemporary AC hits.....

Jon and Sheri are still off Powerline and "20". The Rivers' released a statement about what happened, it was to get Jon help for addiction to painkillers.

Unfortunately, when I made my post earlier in this thread, I had forgotten that all of my radio memorabilia was in my den in the basement, Including hundreds of airchecks, jingle packages (one of the favorite parts of my collection-I love jingles), plus T Shirts, a few awards and year-end countdowns from Casey Kasem for 1972-1981 (and my entire family photo collection and 20 years of home video). I lost "Wolfman Jack for Today's Army", "Robert Morgan for today's Air force", many copies of Programmer's Digest (airchecks send out on Vinyl for PD's to get an idea as to how radio sounded in Tampa, Tucson and/or Portland.
My entire collection of radio stuff went, literally, down the drain.
On June 7th... we all, we all know what happened to Columbus on June 7th.
I lost nearly all of my 35 years of radio stuff, including the 2 or 3 dozen Powerline programs.
So to those of you who emailed me requesting copies of Powerline, please forgive me for not responding, and apologies for not being able to fulfill your requests.
-Jim-

As far as Powerline goes, I don't believe it is on anymore. John and Sheri have gone back to hosting 20. They came back about two months ago. And as far as their morning show on K-Love, I am not sure if they are back on that. WHPZ in South Bend carries 20 on Sunday mornings after Don Moen and Friends.

Although I don't really recall this show, it did run on WIEL in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, as I have a copy of a spot Dick Curtis did for it. I'm guessing it ran anywhere from the mid 70's to mid 80's.

Jon and Sheri have not returned to K-Love. K-Love's new morning show now originates in Indianapolis. The version of 20 that KLove airs is hosted by someone other than Jon Rivers.

John, who really is a super nice guy was the morning jock on the old KFJZ-FM in Fort Worth-Dallas, better known as Z-97. It was a tightly formatted mid 70's top 40 that sounded really good but didn't last but a couple of years. John went to KLVU (now KLUV) after McLendon threw in the towel and sold the original occupant of the 98.7 frequency in Dallas, KNUS. John did morning and was the PD and programed a decent soft rock format in the early 80's. Today KLUV is a very good sounding classic hits station. John also did mornings for several years on Christian AC KLTY in Dallas.

I listened to it in Southern Indiana as a young non-church-goer, probably early 70's. I kind of liked it even though I was an evil heavy metal/acid rock/hard rock sorta dude.

Brother Jon Rivers is very much still with us. He suffered an addiction to painkillers and stepped down from K-Love. There was a Brother John Rydgren who has passed away.

I remembered that I drive by the complex in Fort Worth every day here it was produced (I think).

I'm interested in obtaining copies of Power Line shows; I know it's very hard to find but you never find if you don't ask. I've contacted family life radio, they don't have access anymore from what they told me. If anyone has copies and they're on CD, I'll pay shipping if needed. Thanks!
