YSP Classic Rock

yes, something actually happened. now we can all judge the heck out of it.

i think they might be on to something. the 80s is certainly the next logical era of nostalgia, if history is any indicator, and it usually is. could be the move of the year as long as they don't ruin it with a schlocky morning show.

and best of all, they managed to keep it under wraps until 6 a.m. today. seems like maybe there's a tight ship over there all of the sudden. i haven't been surprised by the radio in years, and this morning was certainly unexpected, given the loose lips this city is notorious for.

well done, YSP. now don't get cocky!

Now playing: Green Day "Welcome To Paradise".

I had no idea Green Day qualified as "classic rock"...

Oh, my bad - it's "the rock you grew up with".

In other words, it's the WOGL of rock n' roll.

At some point, classic rock has to evolve into something other that Elton John and Crosby Stills And Nash. Might be a good move for them. Gives listeners another option besides WMGK, for those who like a little more edge to their classic rock but aren't in to the whole screaming in your face active rock scene. My only concern would be that the 'Classic Rock That Rocks' format is very hit or miss. In some cities, it thrives and in other cities it crashes and burns.

It seems to me they are more aggressive than safe MGK, whilst focusing on 90's alt.rock to punk out the older demo of Radio 104.5. Time will tell but, so far, it might be a winner. Let's see what happens once they settle in. This might be just an attention-grabber.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I have not tuned them in yet, now I will, are they playing any 80's hair bands and 80's metal, 70's punk, industrial and 90's grunge, if so they have a winner. I did notice last week MGK playing some heavier tunes so they must of new, heck we all did....

This doesn't really sound like much of a change from where they are now. Blooms quote was that he wanted to "rip the heart out of WMMR". I don't think changing a couple dozen songs on a station's playlist will even rip out a finger nail, let alone the heart!

As far as what is missing in Classic Rock in Philly, I don't hear new songs from Springsteen or Mudcrutch (Tom Petty) on MMR or MGK. There are other "classic rock" bands that put new stuff out that pretty much gets ignored in Philly (sometimes for good reason). Just one example - I have heard new songs from Def Leppard on rock and classic rock stations in Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut while traveling this summer. Springsteen's "Radio Nowhere" did well on Billboard's Clasic Rock chart when it was released earlier in the year too. If it wasn't for satellite radio and VH-1 classic, I would never have heard it.

I'm not sure if new songs by classic rock bands should be played on active rock stations or classic rock stations. It's a gray area.

Wonder if they ever heard of this obscure guy named Paul Rodgers? He's got more talent in his little finger than the sum total of everything I've heard them play thus far.

Bad Company? Those guys are the godfathers of regressive forklift-driver rock. "Feel Like Makin' Love"? "Rock N' Roll Fantasy"? I never got all the excitement over that band, and I guess I never will.

WYSP has been awful ever since they returned, and turning into "The Rock You Grew Up With" represents the last nail in the coffin for them as far as I'm concerned. At least they were good enough for a preset both as a somewhat tame Active Rocker and a Hot Talk station, but ever since they came back with this "Classic Rock That Rocks" sound (which they have been since they came back - they just made it official with the new branding) they've been worthless in my eyes.

Try as I might, I can't get my head around CBS's line of thinking - giving the people more of the same old thing isn't working for them in NYC with K-Rock, and it's had them bringing up the rear in Philly behind WMMR, WMGK and Radio 104.5. With practically nothing that makes them stand out in the market (oooooh, they're playing moldy old fossil rock and cornball hair metal - awesome!) and a boring music intensive morning show (don't get me wrong, Frank Lario's cool ... he helped to create the classic WDOX sound with Tom McNally ... but if the powers that be won't allow him to summon that station's adventurous spirit with the music, the morning show will make you hit the snooze button), it's a very safe bet that there's nowhere for WYSP to go but down. This is such a bad move that I'm actually hoping for it to bomb.

Bad Company is a great band. but i still say 1057 the hawk 100% of the way

Rip the heart out of WMMR? By playing Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water" at the beginning of the PM rush hour on the first day with their "new" format?

Rip their heart out?

With Deep Purple at 5:00?

Bahahahahahahaha!!! That's freakin' hilarious.

From the philly.com article: (WYSP) Station manager Jim Loftus said: "When you come out with a new hamburger, people are going to compare you to McDonald's or Burger King."

Sadly, WYSP went with a McFormat.

philly.com article: The format signed on at 6 a.m. with "Paradise City" from Guns N Roses.

Wow. Loftus said this format is different (exactly how, I'm not quite sure).

WYSP is now a "hits of the (decade)s and (decade)s" station. Sad. Apparently, no one over there has ever heard the saying, "you can't lead if you keep following."
