YSP To Classic Rock

DToTheJ said:
Confirmed: The rock is back - classic rock, that is... From Dan Gross in today's Daily News:
http://www.philly.com/dailynews/features/gossip/20080806_Dan_Gross___YSP_wants__MGK_listeners.html

Yes, it's confirmed: Dan Gross is reading the radio-info board, which i'll bet is where his "sources" came from for that story.

Also confirmed: the agent of the failing O&A show is trying to create a buzz by taking advantage of an uncertain YSP future and probable hiring of a new PD by talking about O&A on the O&A show. seems more like a desparate move by a hack agent.

i look forward to seeing what actually happens.

Gross was the first to reveal YSP was dumping th talk format, so I would think it's pretty credibel. He probably has a mole on the inside who is feeding him this info.

I know If I am Spike, Gordon and Jennifer I am not feeling real good right now.

they are never going to go anywhere if they keep changing every year

they should have stuck with talk alittle longer

This isn't so drastic a change that they'll blow out the airstaff, I don't think.

Also, note that the Gross article says they're going with "hits of the 70s and 80s." That's about 5-10 years newer than what MGK plays. Good move there, going after people in their 30s and 40s while MGK goes after people in their 40s and 50s and MMR and RFF go after people in their 20s. If this sounds like XM's Big Tracks, I'll be listening more.

If O&A don't come on board, does that mean the return of Barsky in the Morning? :)

I love MGK's Deep Trax HD-2 channel, which I've sampled online. If they had that playlist on the main channel, along with MGK's jock lineup, I'd never stop listening!

what you need my friend is 105.7

Note to YSP: Copy off of 105.7, you will do well. the only reason they are not beating wmgk right now, is because they only cover lower bucks and NE Philly crystal clear. with another 10-20 miles to the NW, they would have it all.

Hopefully with any breed of an active rocker out of the picture, 104.5 will have an excuse to go somewhat harder than they are now and broaden up their playlist.

Does MMR not count?

good point, MMR is an Active Rocker. even though some people say they are not.

OH YES
STAY TUNED

Assuming the O&A and classic rock rumors are both correct, why would CBS put an 18-34 demo morning show on a 25-54 demo music format? It doesn't work. And it won't work.

For example, the O&A show will end and roll right into "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple?

WYSP had the classic rock market cornered years ago, then they defined what an active rock station should sound like. Stern went away and they should have just stuck with the active rock format. But no, they went Free FM and now they can't get ratings as a rock station with a ratings service that benefits rock stations.

Whatever they do, WYSP will still be the "4th rock station" in the market.

whats wrong with some zeppelin? some different songs yea, but no one can get rid of the best band ever made. how bout achilles last stand, carouselambra, in the evening, nobodys fault but mine, etc

There is nothing wrong with some zeppelin, and Aerosmith. I just don't want to hear a format change and hear Black Dog, and Stairway over and over. I am all for the songs you mentioned.

If they are going Classic Rock then for heavens sake play the non-urban/rock oldies of the 60's, example, Animals, DC5, Zombies, Them, Beatles, Stones, Steppenwolf, the same for the 70's, the hair bands of the 80's Wasp, Cinderella, Y&T, Warrant, Tesla, Twisted, and the Grundge sound of the 90's, Classic rock from 64 to 94...the real years of Classic Rock. In a nutshell, do what sister OGL does not do play, the non urbanic stuff. On the same note, why is someone targeting the good performing MGK to grab some listeners BUT BUT BUT no-one will go after OGL, they are on top for the simple reason only game in town. We all know if 97.5 flips to real classic oldies ala WMID they would clean up, I dont buy the audiance age is stopping a real oldies station from coming on board. I would also include the B but in reality they do have competition from JBR which has a city grade signal in the area. NJO took a chunk of OGL's audiance when they were oldies and this was with a limited signal, check the ratings the periods when NJO was oldies OGL was down, when NJO flipped OGL came up....its in the books...the truth is there.

Actually, WMMR is a Rock (or Mainstream Rock) station that reports as Active, just like sister stations WRAT and WDHA in New Jersey. I mean, they just played Creed, a band whose domain is pretty much exclusively "Mix" stations these days. Safe soccer mom dreck.

Also, Active Rock stations play bands like Korn, System Of A Down, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Static-X, etc. These bands are nowhere to be found on WMMR's log, as they are too busy playing tired Van Halen, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith tracks ad nauseum. Still, they're better and slightly more interesting musically than WYSP, but of course that isn't saying much. Philly deserves better choices than what they have now.

Even though they're played to death on many stations in the market, I suppose there's nothing wrong with the less worn-out titles from these bands - that is, whatever ones remain. WYSP could have done so much better had they just grown a spine and gone edgier with a sound like 93.5 The Beach. This is exactly what the market is lacking and they could have performed really well if they went with it. I think that CBS is being run by a bunch of stodgy old farts that aren't making decisions that will benefit their company - they should step down.

WYSP should be more like Rock 102 in Fargo, ND. If they were to simulcast Scotch, Dui, & Ginger in mornings, the ratings would be through the ROOF by now!

And, if they're going classic rock, they should take a page right out of the Z101 Helena MT book! www.kzmt.com

A morning show with co-hosts named "Scotch" and "DUI"? Riveting.

I'd rather have 16-hour tape-delayed "Free Beer & Hot Wings".
