Z-730

Well, if it hasn't happened yet, it will in days. They are dumping the music for Fox Sports. I thought Lanny would at least give it till the end of the year. Just totally pathetic. No business being involved in radio.

I was really pulling for them, I was hoping to see a successful AM music station. If management wasn't willing to give it at least a year, I don't know why they even bothered with the attempt.

 Another NON-RADIO person calling the shots...they should just go and concentrate on selling beer, cigars and gas in their primary business. Did the paint even dry on the flippin' studio before switching formats? The make good meds for A.D.D.....they should try them!!!

Biting tongue...biting tongue...biting tongue...

Trying to refrain from the condiscending phrases...maybe others here are more brave. Why oh why, will Lanny not exercise patience with the formats on his "new" stations? I was really pulling for him and hoping he'd learned from the "format wheel" he created at 1350 in Black Mtn. Now, here he goes again. I think this is what should NOT have happened:

-AM 730 moving from Shelby; the remaining 1390 has a weaker signal, especially at night.

And while not Lanny's station, 1220 should've remained as WKMT in Kings Mtn.

Rant mode, off...for now.

Hopefully this will put an end to any new sports talk on WAVO. I just hope THEY don't try oldies. WAVO is the best standards station there is.

Well that’s another radio preset deleted. Fox Sports…give me a freaking break!
Hey Ken, Liz & GT; I enjoyed each of your shows and the oldies, even though it was a short run. Maybe one day the idiots running Charlotte radio will give us a local oldies station…but I won’t be holding my breath.
:(

I feel bad for Ken, Liz and the rest of the staff. It's been a bumpy ride for those folks the past few years.

As for Z-730 outside of the radio nuts (us) who even know this station exists? I agree with whoever said to move it back to Shelby and move 1220 back to Kings Mountain. The trouble is ad revenue is probably hard to come by in these small towns.

Charlotte has enough radio stations, some might even say too many.

Mike, ad revenue is hard to come by in pretty much any town, Charlotte included, when you're not the one big, long-time AM leader in the market.

What amazes me is that guys like Fontana, Lanny, Kevin (the guy who went to jail), and probably others, keep pouring money and effort into these dogs thinking they have the "magic" answer. No pun intended!

The fact of the matter is - if you're call letters aren't WBT in this town, you don't stand a chance as an AM station - no matter what the format.

Save your money and don't bother!

A postscript...

The Spring 2010 ratings show just three AM stations with any 12+ shares at all - they are WBT (4.9), WFNZ (1.4) and WGIV (.7). A total of 7.0 share points.
All the rest of listening in the Charlotte metro is to FM stations.

Now, do all of these folks really believe that their programming is so interesting, unique, entertaining and compelling that they're actually going to pull people back to the AM band? Not going to happen - get real!

Lanny had no clue what he was doing. Hate to cast stones but he had offeres of help and refused to take it. There was zero business on the radio and think lots of it had to do with the Sales Manager who had Urban experience as a seller but no sales management experience and less than zero experience with oldies. There were lots of opportunities but nobody was home. Guess this gives Dave at the Ride another change to wake up and smell the roses.

From what I hear the problem is the owner, old man Boyd. Wants fast money. Does not work that way. He should stick with running his oil/gas company.

The days of AM being a viable medium for music ended a long time ago, no matter how those of us who have spent years in radio wish they could return. Technology has evolved. No matter how it is dressed up or promoted, it's still AM, with all its noise, limited frequency response, and lack of signal penetration in areas where the signal needs to go to be competitive. I am in total agreement with a previous post. If you have an AM station in the Charlotte market and your call letters are not "WBT", game over. The engineering expense required to make a frequency like 1220 or 730 even remotely competitive to a 50,000 signal could never be recovered short term, and these owners who have no clue about broadcasting think that radio is a sure path to fast money. When they see the bank balance start running low, that's when they get nervous and pull the plug, so for oldies on 730, the end wasn't so much a matter of "if" as it was "when". When a reliable, cost effective method to deliver mobile broadband to a moving vehicle becomes the next step in the evolution of technology, what happens to FM?

I think some of us just get caught up in wanting the old days back...
"Those days are gone forever, over a long time ago...oh yeah..." From Pretzel Logic, Steely Dan...

Well, maybe the mgmt. of WZGV know exactly what they're doing.

As they saw the ratings on Z730 weren't that great, they decided to flip & compete head-on with the only other AM station in Charlotte they could - SportsRadio610 - The Fan - WFNZ.

As a previous poster posted, you can't compete w/WBT.

As 730WZGV is twice as powerful as 610WFNZ (10kw as compared to 5kw) it's only a matter of time until we see their ratings improve.

'FNZ has been around for years, & it's about time they had some competition.

Who do you think does a better job: Fox or CBS Sports?

What kind of contracts & syndication will the new station have?

Will they be the exclusive Panthers & Bobcats station?

It would be nice if Adult Standards 1150WAVO could receive a CP to boost their ERP.

Charlotte is the largest city between DC & Atlanta.

If we've got two AM stations competing with sports programming, we've got to at least have an FM outlet (even an LPFM, such as 90.3WRBK/Richburg SC) programming Adult Standards/Oldies!
