Z 93

That was the phenomenal video played at the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame banquet.

I find it amazing that this major signal hasn't been able to generate big ratings in the past 20 years.

Thanks for sharing this; it brought back some great memories. I think Z-93, Power 99 and 99X are part of the reason we in Atlanta are so passionate about radio; we are used to having great radio in this city.

I sure wish I could hear the segue from CHR Z-93 to Classic Rock Z-93. I wasn't in Atlanta at the time but someone told me about it and I remember being floored. I know it happened in January 1989 but never heard the format flip. Any one have that?

These station's are a complete skeleton of what they use to be. Thanks to CC and other' s who have ruined terrestial radio in Amerika. ??? ::)

I would add both Quixie and 94Q in the 1970s and 96 Rock in the late 1970s into the mid-80s in that group, as well as Z93 (they dropped the hyphen when they went classic rock) in the late 1980s into the early 1990s as well. Z93 always did a much better job with classic AOR than 96 Rock's occasional classic rock format forays.

I'd like to hear Z-93's CHR to classic rock flip as well...but nobody was listening to Z-93 at that point with their stillborn Churban format. Power 99 had killed off a way-past-its-prime Z-93...much as 94Q suffered as Z-93 started hitting its stride in the late 70s.

What was one of the things they called themselves during that time period ... I think it was "Hot New Z93".

Yup. I was a little surprised to see the logo/sticker from that era during the video (it's the one with the pink-ish oval and thin blue stripes with something like "Atlanta's Hit Music Station!" at the bottom), but the main content of the video stops around 1986 - no mention of Randy Miller, for example. (I've got one of those stickers on my desk. I've even got a Six Flags Z-Force t-shirt with that logo on the back - Z-Force opened in 1988.)

As far as the aircheck of the flip - was there an official switch time? I remember that during the two or three weeks prior to the switch (after Miller had already split), they started mixing up the music. I was not completely well-versed in classic rock at the time, but I remember the song selection seeming even more left-field than just your basic classic rock. (I recall hearing something that sounded like a Robert Plant solo track, but one that I could not identify.) I remember that Monday hearing the morning show hype the "new" classic rock Z-93, but it was hard to tell if there was a specific time that the switch actually happened (other than possibly when the morning show went on the air that morning).

What a ton of great memories. I know John Young is on this board from time to time. The honor is well deserved. I was a teenaged radio rookie right during the heart of when this video was talking about, and Z93 certainly shaped how I wanted to do radio, and eventually wound up programming. Your staff indeed had a huge passion, and was very willing to share. Steve Mapel once let me come up to the studios for a look around and talked shop for a while. Not a lot of people would have made time for a young kid just learning the ropes and still a bit star struck. I'll never forget it.

I grew up listening to the MIGHTY Z 93, the over night jock went to our church in Atlanta. Johnny Bee, and he is why i am in radio today, Thanks Johnny. that was my dream job station, never made it but man i could dream ,LOL. thanks for the flash back!

You are right, Caller10, they did refer to themselves as "Hot New Z93". I know that it started somewhere in January 1988. I left Atlanta for a few weeks in January and February 1988; when I came back they were referring to themselves as "Hot New". I also remember the music mix being slightly more rhythmic. I was too young at the time, but I remember hearing a difference in their music but not quite being able to put my finger on it. Years later, I read somewhere that their new format was called "churban" (CHR + Urban).

Years ago, possibly in 1991 or 1992, Billboard was doing a run down of every station of Atlanta. It mentioned that the Jack the Ripper convention was held in Atlanta in August '88 and Z-93 was all the rage. Everyone was raving about it. The sad thing was five months later churban was silenced.

Someone earlier had mentioned that Power 99 basically served Z93 its lunch by the late 80s. How true that statement is. Do you remember that "Situation" by Yaz was broke by Power? I remember looking for this song everywhere on Billboard magazine and being unable to find it (I finally found the CD in an old record store in Athens). Power 99 just decided to play it in Fall 87 since it was a cool song even though it was several years old. Z93 added the song a few months later and you could tell that Z was just mimicking what Power did. It was trailing Power badly and I guess it felt it had to do something drastic in order to compete with PPPPPPower 99.

do you remember when most of the stations in Atlanta had haunted houses during halloween. i rember going to Z93's in the late 70's in Roswell and Ross and Wilson was there, it was the best haunted house out of all the Stations. Yep they had it going on!

Does anyone else have a copy of "Randy Miller - Live at the Varsity" the Randy Miller Morning Show Hits Volume 1? I found it in my Cassette Case when cleaning out the basement today. ;D

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, whoa whoa whoa!!!!

You mean... that song actually DID play there at one point? Who thought I'd discover this - IN 2010?!? There should be a chart somewhere that contains a list of top hits stations (SPECIFIC STATIONS, not just stations in general) played back in the late 80's to early 90's. The reason I wantit to be specific is because just having the top hits list does not tell you WHICH places & stations those songs were or WERE NOT played in...

I am not a CC fan. Has CC ever owned Power 99 of Z93? How can you ruin a station you do not own? Ruin an industry, CC could be guilty as charged. That would be an excellent thread.

WTH? "Situation" came out in 1982. Warm 100/99.7 didn't flip to Power 99 until 1986. Math doesn't work.

I've got a tape of the switch from Hot New Z93 to classic rock 93, in January of 1989. Would GRHOF accept it?
Send me a PM and I will accept it.
