Z100 30th anniversary?

Theres a cool 12 page writeup about Z in this weeks 8/03 billboard magazine.

It said they actually fell to 18th place in the mid 90s during the ugly alternative era but the top 40 comeback brought them back to life.

You mean the ugly alternative era that won Station of the Year numerous times in Rolling Stone magazine? The one that millions of baby boomer's kids listened to?

Milllions only got them 18th so what was #1 getting 98,000,000.

& Rolling stone awards -- what was the al-qaeda station ineligible ?

As I tuned past 102.1 this morning and heard Elvis Duran there too, it reminded me
of another reason not to do a 30th anniversary special - the morning show is on stations
in several markets. Anything from "Philadelphia wouldn't care" to "it would be too confusing"
to suddenly be talking about Scott Shannon and Mr. Leonard, Hollywood Hamilton and "Maniac"
even for a morning.

Perhaps a one or two hour retrospective over the weekend might be applicable. Think about
when TV stations have anniversaries, they don't stop their programming to bring back all their
news casters for the whole weekend. They might have a special show. But then TV is different.

Is it this weekend? I wonder why, in 2003, they did a flashback weekend in January then celebrating 20 years? That's what initially prompted me to start this thread, because I have an aircheck from that weekend.

A thought - what if Lite FM incorporated Z's 30th into their usual "Best of the 80's" weekends, inviting some of the old DJ's to do shifts, and sprinkling in some old Z100 jingles and airchecks here and there? A lot of their audience probably grew up with the early days of Z100. Would that click with the audience? Or would create confusion and/or go too far against their usual "less talk" approach?

Of course, CBS-FM would be the ideal outlet for an 80's Z100 tribute, but somehow I doubt that would fly with either CBS or Clear Channel. Then again, it's not like CBS-FM and modern-day Z100 are really going after the same audience.

CBS owns 92.3 Now that wouldn't work well. Another reason why Z wouldn't want others to know it's their 30th because of Now.

That would be more accurate if anyone was listening to NOW or was passionate about it

Z100 did in fact do something to commemorate the 30 year anniversary. Hollywood Hamilton called in to blow the 5 O'Clock Whistle and throughout the 5pm hour, they played a ton of throwback songs. The first throwback being "Eye Of The Tiger" of course.

Just listened to the aircheck from the first day in '83. MAN those songs were pitched/sped up to hell! "I'm Still Standing" by Billy Joel sounded almost Alvin and the Chipmunkish! I mean I know it's CHR and it gets pitched/sped up to "brighten" the programming but...damn! Great songs though

Gosh way to make a gal feel old. Loved Z100 when growing up. We would crank it up before we would go out and in the car. Great memories and good times!

Nice aircheck from the first day of Z100 back in 1983. It is a scoped aircheck, but I decide to put the music back where it belongs to have it as a restored aircheck. I have all the music on my files, so I decided to put the music back in. And as for the rest of he airchecks in 3-parts, the music was way to high due to what it was called Time Compressing. So I decided to pitch it down to -3 using Audacity to do the work. I will work on posting the restored aircheck of Z100's first day on the air soon. Stay tuned!
