Z100 tweaking in a rhythmic direction

According to an article in All Access Z100 is pulling a number of CHR rock songs from rotation in order to compete directly with 92.3 NOW which leans rhythmic.

Z100 had the market to themselves for a number of years but it seems that with the tweak they are waking up to the new competition.

If that is what Z100 is truly doing, I think that's a plain dumb move at this point in the game! NOW is barely a month old and already Z100 is reacting??? I don't get it. Z shouldn't be changing ANYTHING just yet for NOW, especially for a station that plays the same music over and over again!! NOW's big mistake so far is that they are truly trying to talk themselves up with all this Z100 bashing, when in fact they SHOULD be letting the music speak for itself (like Pulse 87 does for instance). I sincerely hope NOW isn't serious about thinking they are ever going to beat Z100 in ratings with the current state of their playlist... it's not happening! I'm assuming and HOPING after this boring 10,000 song stunt is over that they start opening up that playlist a lot more. If they want to be a Rhythmic CHR, great! But stop playing the same 20 songs over and over again!!! I don't even listen to it right now at all... I much prefer other stations on the dial at this point. Hopefully in time that changes.

It's under the portion that talks about Citadel and WPLJ in the PPM analysis put out March 30.
It also says WPLJ could easily benefit on the upper end, as it becomes the sole outlet in the NEW YORK market with a decidedly Adult Top 40 focus with emphasis on pop/rock hits from JASON MRAZ, COLDPLAY and NICKELBACK.

Hopefully this isn't too much to get yanked by the mods.

Line From All Access:

"Playlist watchers like us have recently noted the adjustments made at Z100 as a handful of key pop/rock titles have been swept out in favor of increased focus on Rhythmic to defend against the aggressive Rhythmic stance of 92-3 NOW"

Bad move in my opinion Z needs to Stay the course. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

hmm

Z's Playlist doesn't look much different

KELLY CLARKSON My Life Would Suck Without You TW 73 LW 61 Move +12
FRAY You Found Me TW 58 LW 62 Move -4
TAYLOR SWIFT Love Story TW 53 LW 42 Move +11
JESSE MCCARTNEY How Do You Sleep? TW 44 LW 40 Move +4
NEW ADD! KELLY CLARKSON I Do Not Hook Up TW 27 Move +27
JASON MRAZ I'm Yours TW 26 LW 27 Move -1

Still see Bob Sinclair 2 from cascada All American rejects couple from Pink.

They may have shifted the slightest I mean SLIGHTEST toward Rhythmic. but they are Still in my opinion A balanced Top 40.

CBS Knows they Cannot beat Z-100. I don't even think that is in the plans. It may be a move to Knock Z-100 out of the #1 Spot. Which IS do able. anyways this is still WAY Better than K-Rock.

I hope we all realize that even things written as fact aren't always fact. For weeks there have been posts that Z100 wouldn't and shouldn't and hadn't reacted. They are too smart to react right? Then this story comes out and everyone yells "What are they doing?!" "Why are they reacting?" Seems to me, based on the above actual playlist, that it's pretty much business as usual.

The overall strategy of CBS is not to overtake Z100. They know better. It's simply to divide listenership in the market to ultimately create a more equitable revenue share for each respective cluster.

This ain't brain surgery.

Z100 going in a rhythmic direction? That sucks a lot. I HATE HATE HATE RAP. You can't spell Crap without Rap. I don't mind the occasional Kanye West, Akon, Flo Rida, but no Britney spears please. And that horrendous piece of crap Lady Gaga I don't freaking care about your stupid poker face and Rihanna, she's got too many freaking single, stop releasing singles. Now's alright, they need to add rock. I like CHR's with a rock lean like WSTW, 98.5 KRZ. I think that if Z100 adds Shinedown, Offspring, Saving Abel, etc. they'll do well. As for Now, they're gonna get killed by Hot 97 and Power 105.

1. They aren't going Rhythmic
2. Rhythmic doesn't mean Rap. it means Dance leaning. Urban means Rap
3. Those rock songs don't test well with a CHR audience. This is not a rock leaning town anyway.
4. You don't like rap but you name Rap artists you like and then list Rhythmic artists you don't.

So confusing!

Let me break some down on Radaioman here.....
(me in italics)

1. They aren't going Rhythmic
Probably not but too early to say.

2. Rhythmic doesn't mean Rap. it means Dance leaning. Urban means Rap
Here's the confusing part about "rhythmic" (going ahead on your "So confusing!" quote). Rhythmic DOES mean Urban, perhaps one can say "Urban Dance" with that tinge of hip-hop. Some of the artists that Jeffrey mentioned are "rhythmic" but they are not "dance", per se. So in that sense, NOW AND Z aren't dance leaning unless they play a Kim Sozzi or Da Groove Doctors. And quite honestly, I haven't heard them on EITHER station.

3. Those rock songs don't test well with a CHR audience. This is not a rock leaning town anyway.
Spot on.

the millions of CHR fans don't read these alarmist message boards; they're too busy listening to NY's #1, Z100!

Are you on their payroll or something? At least you're not calling for them to play the New York Dolls.

Excellent move on Z100s part. They could only get away with playing those Midwestern sounding pop-rock songs because they had no direct competition.

Yeah and the hour before the 7 o'clock hour they played The Fray, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, and All-American Rejects... and then low and behold, again in the 8 o'clock hour: Kelly Clarkson, The Fray, Taylor Swift and Jason Mraz...

Anyone can search through their logs and the way rotations happen, find the LEAST pop-like hour and say, they're tweaking, but the reality is they are still very much mainstream pop, playing the biggest hits in the land... slight changes in rotation occur regularly as the top songs in all the land change, a Top 40 station has the sound of the top songs in the land.

Pop Rock is not a Midwest only thing. Sorry

yes anyone can log on to Yes.com and check out the logs. If they do they'll see the brunt of songs in rotation at any hour on Z100 are rhythmic.
Doesn't mean there are no non rhythmic songs in the mix. As the article said a handful of pop rock songs were pulled.
