Z102 Lubbock is now KISS FM!

I don't really see why anyone would waste money to change the call letters from KZII. If you ask me, those are pretty representative already.

Call letters don't matter the way they used to.
KISS FM in Austin is KHFI.
They're legendary calls in the market but nowadays they're only mentioned in the legal ID.

Did anybody record it?

I don’t have the ability to record anything from online, but I did hear the format change on Friday through the online stream. Bucwhyl, let me asure you that it was the most boring format change I’ve ever heard. After Prince’s “Kiss,” all you heard was a male voice (I believe it was Cris Corley) mumble the legal ID, and nothing else, before the first song. Trust me, sir, you didn’t miss a thing, honest!

I just hate that I can't get my flash player to work in order to hear the stream.

I have to be honest... I am some what confused about the excitement regarding the change at Z. I don't see the music changing. I don't see how it could. The music was almost identical to KISS in Dallas. At least it was when I was there. The only difference, when I was there, that we were spinning a few more rock tracks and the rotation on the HOT tracks was not as tight as in Dallas. As for the jock lineup... I read Eathen won't be on air and as for BIG I don't know exactly what's happening there either. So, let's say Eathen is off air but BIG is still on... Now you are one less LIVE JOCK. What's good about that? The only change I can see is the imaging. I don't see how the change is GOOD. Now you simply have another drone station with no individuality.

Also, seeing that Z is now a KISS station... I would like to know how locked in MIX is with KIDD KRADICK? How long is that contract they have with him? Cause, if Z is now a KISS station and GEORGE is reportedly good friends with KIDD.... is there a chance that he could jump over to Z if and when his contract expires/ comes up to renew etc... with MIX?

Hate to burst your bubble Crow, but you're out of your ever-lovin' mind if you think Kidd will ever be on KZII. First of all, I would bet KMMX has right of first refusal at the completion of their current contract. Mix bills an obscene amount with Kidd, and they'd be out of their got dammed mind to not be on top of that.

Secondly, Kidd and Yea Network make a pretty damned big chunk of change from ratings bonuses and incremental contract increases through their eight years in Lubbock. It's one of, if not their best performing affiliates. George could be Kraddick's daddy.. Kidd won't give up that steady flow of income. Money talks.

The ironic part is when it first went syndicated in 2001, the Kidd deal was KZII's to be had. It was only offered to Mix after Z102 turned it down (remember, Clear Channel's Premiere originally syndicated KKITM before Kraddick bought it out).

If Z would have signed it then, things would undoubtedly be a lot different today.

Why the anger in your message? We're just discussing here. Nobody's picking sides. Kidd can be on Mix, or Kiss, doesn't really matter. Only somebody who works for Mix 100 would be offended by the mere suggestion that he might move to 102.5 at some point. I don't know why people can't leave their radio wars on the microphone, and not duke it out on the message board. No need to have this here.

Wasn't mad at all. Just trying to emphatically impart some wisdom. ;D

I've been a lurker for a long time. Glad to have finally posted. ;)

And no, I don't work for Mix 100 or Wilkes.

although I agree with the previous post, I have to say that MIX does not generate that much cash flow from airing Kidd Kraddick. MIX even with the impressive showing of females (if you believe the ARB) fails to do that well in the billing department. MIX generally plays alot of bonus spots that are usually a part of some Triple L 3 for 1 package, and that is the way its always been. I am sure that they are doing better with some national money coming in, but that is probably about it for them. Why would they continue to let people go at MIX if they were making a bunch just because of KK? Plus I do not recall much "radio wars" discussion on this board. I could have missed it.

First off... I wasn't saying that KIDD would flip etc... I was simply throwing that out there. I would imagine that MIX would do anything legal or none legal to keep their money maker on the station. The whole station revolves around KIDD. You take him away they would drop. Probably not very far but they would still drop. Anyone who knows radio knows that MIX benefits greatly from having DFW jock syndicated on their station when you have so many transplants from DFW going to school here. If Z102 actually had a shot at getting KIDD... whomever said no to that deal has got to be the biggest moron within the radio industry.

Oh.. KMMX would drop like a rock without Kidd.

I don't know exactly what the Fa08 dayparted numbers showed, but I know in books previous they had a huge problem retaining listenership throughout the day after KKITM.

This is fascinating...and sad at the same time. Being the radio nerd that I was, Z102 was one of those stations I always tried to pick up way out here in Clovis (back when I was still in their target demo!) and they were always great. In those days, every daypart was filled with a local voice -- they even had an overnighter! It was 100% Lubbock, the first one I'd check whenever in town. I even toured the facility back when it was on the outskirts with KFYO.

I sincerely miss that kind of vibe from radio, and this KISS crap just seems like the final blow.

A friend of mine commented the other day about "the McDonalds of radio" -- every market has a "KISS", every market has a "MIX". It just really isn't that exciting to tune in to "local" radio anymore whenever you travel, since you only ever hear the same 5 jocks and formats.

Back in the day, I could go to Amarillo, and get a feel for the place by listening to Z93 or something. In Lubbock, you'd know you were in Lubbock because of Z102, FMX, 'LLL. But nowadays, what's the point of tuning in at all?

True, "Z" was never really all that original a monikor, and stations have been cloning their formats since the beginning. And I realize there are marketing/budget considerations. But hasn't this gone a bit far?

Nowadays, you have stations with THE EXACT SAME LOGOS/WEBSITES/JOCKS/EVERYTHING! You drive across the country these days, and you expect to hear the same 5 jocks/formats/stations your whole friggin' trip. Needless to say, it's quite lame, and I'm sad to see what's going on everywhere, but especially in Lubbock.

Dear corporate/cheapskate radio, I ask only on favor: PLEASE, for the love of God, leave FMX as "FMX"? Please, PLEASE do not turn it into "EAGLE 94.5" or "EDGE" or some copycat crap? Not that any of you know or give a crap about local history or tradition or, well, anything...but FMX is still a Lubbock institution (much like KLLL). Are you finally finished destroying everything that made radio interesting and cool in the first place?

Crow...I'll give you three gueses as to who your moron is, and the first two guesses don't count.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

And tomorrow.... there will be a change on your morning dial. Not saying what. However, I will say it is ABOUT damn time.

Yeah I heard they're giving up Bob & Tom on FMX to save money. I guess that starts tomorrow? I wonder who they will replace them with. Must suck, having to give up the morning show ranked #1 in males.

Is Bob & Tom's syndicator not being flexible in this economy? It seems that they should if stations everywhere are asking their local personalities to take a cut.

I know that it comes down to cash and I would also imagine that the simple fact that the show SUCKS! As for being #1 in males.... even though I am not for sure how true your statement is or even the one I am about to make... I would be willing to say that it would extremely surprise me IF that was the case.... B&T being #1 in males. I just couldn't see how. Yet, weird things have happend before. I do know they had a very sweet syndication deal. Their monthly payment for running the same old crap and from what I remember they would get a bonus as long as they were in the TOP 3 in their demo... I believe that's how it worked. However, I could be wrong on the specifics. I haven't seen their contract in a long time. I do know that it has been talked about, B&T being removed, for a long time now. And B&T should have been taken off a long time ago. I am glad to hear that its finally happening and I am interested in hearing how the new team will do. Knowing who it will be... I wish them luck and success. It will be interesting.

One thing that nobody has mentioned yet is, will Bob & Tom show up on another station in Lubbock? Or, is their synidcation so steep as is being suggested here, that no other station in this market would have the money or feel that they were worth the expense?
