Well after reading this board since the countdown began yesterday, I had to register on this website to give my two cents, for what it's worth:
Personally, I loved Z93. It was there from the beginning of my childhood (with Jeff Wicker and Kim Ferris on "Wicker in the Morning") - I basically grew up with Kim Ferris' kids. Z93 was there throughout high school and college, and even until yesterday, I would count on the Z to be there for daily commutes and to accompany me in daily routine activities. I really always valued Z93 and missed it dearly when I traveled.
I can recall calling in (and even winning!) giveaways - they'd offer concert tickets, CDs, Halloween attraction tickets, tickets to Funny Bone (formerly Joker's), lunch for two, the Z93 "E -Z Money," and lots of other contests and giveaways.
Who will sponsor the annual "Bra Bridge?" How about Penn Station's Athlete of the Month? No more Z93 Night at the Dayton Funny Bone? Z93 did so much for the Miami Valley - its participation in the community and support for public awareness on issues such as breast cancer was outstanding.
With the new "Jack" format and lack of DJs, there will be no more community involvement. I think that those of us who loved Z93 loved it not only for the music, but also for the DJs and the participation and engagement that the station allowed its listeners, as well as the station's support for the Miami Valley. With Sirius, XM Radio, and all the other satellite radio options available from internet and cable providers, fans of Z93 obviously got more out of it than merely the music.
So with still having to sit through commericals, putting up with songs we may not care for, and no DJs to keep us entertained, I think we're better off supporting 94.5, 102.9, or WNCI or another Columbus station (if you can get them) - or better yet, maybe create your own "DJ-free Jack Mix" with mp3s.
I should have known that something was up when WGTZ switched ownership. First clue was that they got Gina to do nights - she's much more "G" rated compared to FryeGuy, but I have to admit that "What's In Frye's Fly" was always entertaining. I should have had suspicions for what was going to come when Gina replaced FryeGuy's night gig. I wish FryeGuy and all the other former DJs the best of luck.
Lastly, did anyone else notice in the countdown that part of the background music included a helicopter noise that ended in what sounded like a firey crash or a bomb? Maybe that was foreshadowing of what this new "Jack Mix" has done - bombed out a great radio station that was a real asset to Dayton. Z93 will be deeply missed.
