Z93 stunting!

Wow! The music mix looks pretty...well...horrific.

Please tell me the imaging is good enough to counter the musical trainwrecks.

ho hum...think I'll fly off to sleep. Corporate radio doesn't know JACK.

Get the flyswatter or a can of """RAID"""!!!!

Here in Houston Cumulus rocks with Jack. Sounds like I won't have much to look forward to when I'm back in Dayton at X-mas. I feel your pain Dayton.

I am here in Cincinnati and I love it. I think it sounds way better then MAX-FM. I can pick it up with my huge outdoor antenna or in my moms care only. Wish i could pick it up on my portable radio.

Oh, and like Max FM is a great barometer for measuring success. Sure they may be one of the top 2 or 3 stations... in Middletown.
I have only heard one 90's song. They're missing out big time!

It looks like a combination of WMMX/WGRR as I'm watching the playlist on yes.com. WMMX will probably go to a Modern AC now?

I'd expect MIX to completely ignore the fact that FLY even exists...

They blew up a Heritage station for THIS?!? Shameful.

Total cost of the research project?

150,000 DOLLARS

I know a lot of people are laughing and thinking Clear Channel is laughing too, however the company that did the research also happened to build BOB FM Erie and BOB FM Bloomington Il. Liberty too! If anyone should be concerned, look for it to be Clear Channel.

Obviously its sad to see Z93 go away, trust me, i feel your pain. However when research talks, they know what their talking about. Research tells us what listeners truly think of our stations...not what we want them to think.

For the haters of Fly, you must not realize why were in radio. Its our job to serve the listener and what the listener wants!

Research also proves time and time again that it takes a good 2 to 3 years to build a station from scratch, so dont judge this station in the first 4 or even 8 trends or you should be taken away from this business in chains!

Cheers to Mainline for doing something that no one else in the market has been willing to try. Cheers to Mainline for listening to...well...the listeners!

As said earlier, take a close look at Liberty in Richmond. A lot of naysayers there, too...til it came right up.

The demos will be FAR more saleable than Z, even if the 12+ is only the same.

I totally agree with Kentuckymedia. Let's wait this one out. Also, if Mainline listened to the listeners, good for them. I liked the named "The Flight" too...Too bad they didn't use that name instead of "Fly", or what about WING-FM?
Let's also remember that Mainline wants to compete with Lite and Mix. This is the way to do it, like it or not(Some of us like it, some of us not). Z was heritage, yes, but it was only doing a 3 share 12+ and getting almost beat or tying 94.5. I will miss Z more than anyone knows, believe me. However, us that listened to Z at least some of the time didn't have a diary to help Z out.
They're still using the WGTZ calls as of 1 PM...

Oh, I am in no way saying Z shouldn't've gone. It's great that it takes a couple years to build a station. Guess what? investors will not wait 2 or 3 years!
Again, I'm not a bring z back cry baby. I was just expecting something more I guess.

Well after reading this board since the countdown began yesterday, I had to register on this website to give my two cents, for what it's worth:

Personally, I loved Z93. It was there from the beginning of my childhood (with Jeff Wicker and Kim Ferris on "Wicker in the Morning") - I basically grew up with Kim Ferris' kids. Z93 was there throughout high school and college, and even until yesterday, I would count on the Z to be there for daily commutes and to accompany me in daily routine activities. I really always valued Z93 and missed it dearly when I traveled.

I can recall calling in (and even winning!) giveaways - they'd offer concert tickets, CDs, Halloween attraction tickets, tickets to Funny Bone (formerly Joker's), lunch for two, the Z93 "E -Z Money," and lots of other contests and giveaways.

Who will sponsor the annual "Bra Bridge?" How about Penn Station's Athlete of the Month? No more Z93 Night at the Dayton Funny Bone? Z93 did so much for the Miami Valley - its participation in the community and support for public awareness on issues such as breast cancer was outstanding.

With the new "Jack" format and lack of DJs, there will be no more community involvement. I think that those of us who loved Z93 loved it not only for the music, but also for the DJs and the participation and engagement that the station allowed its listeners, as well as the station's support for the Miami Valley. With Sirius, XM Radio, and all the other satellite radio options available from internet and cable providers, fans of Z93 obviously got more out of it than merely the music.

So with still having to sit through commericals, putting up with songs we may not care for, and no DJs to keep us entertained, I think we're better off supporting 94.5, 102.9, or WNCI or another Columbus station (if you can get them) - or better yet, maybe create your own "DJ-free Jack Mix" with mp3s.

I should have known that something was up when WGTZ switched ownership. First clue was that they got Gina to do nights - she's much more "G" rated compared to FryeGuy, but I have to admit that "What's In Frye's Fly" was always entertaining. I should have had suspicions for what was going to come when Gina replaced FryeGuy's night gig. I wish FryeGuy and all the other former DJs the best of luck.

Lastly, did anyone else notice in the countdown that part of the background music included a helicopter noise that ended in what sounded like a firey crash or a bomb? Maybe that was foreshadowing of what this new "Jack Mix" has done - bombed out a great radio station that was a real asset to Dayton. Z93 will be deeply missed.

Some good songs from the 60s and early 70s...but that's about IT! otherwise boorish, jockless and generic.

(elevator music for the pre-apocalypse?)

Would the future buyers of the Dayton CC station up for sale (whichever that one is) would consider a format change to a "Wild 93.9" type of Top 40 sound?

We would surely hope so...glad that Kim Faris left Z when she did.

Would "Hits 105" up in Sidney consider a switch to Top 40 to fill the void left by Z?(despite not being as full powered as 92.9)

It seems like there is a good mix of music on the station. I'm a little surprised that the call letter are still WGTZ seems like if you are going to call yourself Fly 92.9 WING-FM would be a better fit. Fly seems a little too weird. I would think Flyin 92.9 or even as some others have said 92.9 The Flight. At least the name has something to do with Dayton in a way.

Yes, I will miss Z too...At least I taped the hell out of it back in its "glory days". I listened from the days of Dr. Dave and Wild Bill back in '86. I even remember the first song I ever heard on Z was "Obsession" by Animotion. Unfortunately, all things change, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse(That's called the game of life-the real one, not the Milton Bradley board game)...We'll have to wait and see with this new "Fly 929". Life goes on...Sadly, Z-93 is RIP. Sunday, March 15, 1984-Thursday, November 1, 2007. :'(

I understand there are a lot of upset people with the loss of this heritage great, but in the end, give Mainline credit. THEY DID SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE IN RADIO ARE AFRAID TO DO - Listen to the listeners!

Thats right, Mainline asked and paid out the wazoo for it. But the response came in and said..PLAY EVERYTHING!

As for a station turning into something like Wild in Lima, why? The station only banks just enough off its national inventory. No station is going to hold onto their national dollars and wave them in the air like they just dont care. Radio has to make money, and it has to be attractive to buyers. The reason they can have "commercial free hours" is because no one wants to buy commercials on the station.

Chances are when 94.5 gets sold off it will not stay Top 40. However, if it does...the owner will have to have some major financial backing to support it. Top 40 is expensive and doesnt retain much income.

However Fly 92.9 is going to become an instant success in the sagging sales department on East David. It is much more attractive to the "money spending" Women 25-44 demo. It will also take its toll on WMMX and WLQT. Plus it may drag down WTUE just a little bit. Something Z93 did well with was CUME. Something Fly 92.9 will also do well with CUME. Once Dayton becomes a PPM Market, guess what will become one of the top stations.....FLY 92.9

Just got off the phone with my source in Richmond. Dayton's FLY 92.9 will have talent slowly rolling back into the building. It will be about a year before it happens, but it will happen!

Look for them to start with an afternoon driver first, then add someone with a music intensive morning drive. Mainline will also invest in marketing, im talking television and billboards like none other.

Fly is going to be designed by Dayton listeners...so dont worry, it will be okay.

I'll believe it when I hear it...Pray that you are right and that the promise is followed through.
