Zakk on vacation again or... one blip fills in for another

Zakk Tyler is on vacation again, I guess after a grueling three weeks of sniffing Braves reliever Will Ohman's jock earned Zakk another week off. Instead of an Atlanta radio legend filing in it's former WGST mid day host Denny Shaefer. (Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn). Thankfully, Yvonne Monet is also filling in to make Denny sound listenable. Dayton loss is out horrible week.

I've been listening for the past few hours and it's so much better than the usual. Monet has some chops. And I've never really heard Denny do his stuff...he's not making me crazy. A good sign! It will be interesting to see the overall changes afoot at DAVE.

Big day in Georgia radio history. The glorious returns of DennyRadio and KrokTalk.

Great marketing strategy. Tune in every Monday to see if Zakk is on vacation.

Some future weeks will include:

Kimmer and Yvonne in the morning.
Shotgun Sean and Yvonne in the morning.
Tom Hughes and Yvonne in the morning.
Dr. Buff and Yvonne in the morning.
Barnes and Yvonne in the morning.
Moby and Yvonne in the morning.
Rhubarb and Yvonne in the morning.

Neil, I wish you'd hurry up and take over Dave. I don't know how many more of these brilliant moves I can handle from Wheeler before I asplode.

Okay, so it's obvious at this point that management is trying out new show ideas. That said, there is NO WAY they could really think Denny Schaefer is right for the Dave audience. He's a right wing Hanni-baugh wannabe. And I'm not even saying that he's bad at it, but completely miscast at Dave FM.

I found out on Saturday that Yvonne would be filling in with a former Atlanta radio personality. I called intrepid radio reporter (for now) Rodney Ho and we were racking our brains trying to figure out who was filling in and neither of us named Denny. I caught a half-hour of the show and it was basically Denny commenting on news stories and trying hard not to be a “right wing Hanni-baugh wannabe.”

My take is Zakk told Rick Caffey, the handsomest in radio, that Jimmy Baron was too popular and he wanted someone less popular to handle this vacation. Rick thought of the least known person in Atlanta radio and come up with Denny, a man who drew about 25 people to a protest of CNN. Of the 25, 23 were homeless.

Today, Denny scored these huge guests: Sister Hazel and Jeff Van Note. Tomorrow he has Rodney Ho lined up to talk American Idol. Way to know the demo Denny.

If Rick wants to pull the trigger, I am ready to serve. I can be at Colony Square in under an hour.

Obvious that Caffey doesn't know sh*t about the rock side of radio... He lets Michelle go on WAY too long, then brings in Wheeler, who had NEVER programmed a rock station until landing at CC Atlanta. Good thing V103 is keeping the suits off Caffey's rear end for his Dave blunders or else he'd be looking for a gig.

Ridiculous!

Wheeler will look like a genius after the first book for the Denny, Jimmy and Jane in the Morning show.

Zakk will move into the afternoon slot. He was big afternoons in Chicago so why not try him there here. Sully is a good guy and all but I am not sure he brings a whole lot to the table either.

I guess Sister Hazel no longer appears exclusively on Q100. ;D

Demo familiarity AND impeccable timing to boot.

Not too many warm and fuzzy comments about this fill-in. But I've got to say, this show/trio kept me listening this week. Yes, Sister Hazel-blah. American Idol-blah. But the rest was good. I think Yvonne balanced Denny out...and Densil maintains goodness every day. For the 1st time I actually listened to what the callers were saying, it seemed like at the end of the day, they hit the target market. Keep them.

Wow, I thought it was an absolutely terrible fit. Denny Shaeffer could not be more wrong for that station. He's perfect for AM talk radio.....loud, rambling, pompous, ultra-conservative, and self-amused. I found him to be the kind of guy who - if I was sitting next to him at a bar - I'd want to move to the other side where I didn't have to listen to him pontificate. Anyone thinking this is a jump ball between Denny and Jimmy?

Pull up a stool coz I'd be right there with ya.

Even at 5'4" Jimmy wins the "jump ball." It won't be long now. In an earlier post someone wrote that they thought Zakk would move to afternoons. I see that happening too.

To be honest I was never a Denny Shaeffer fan. I'm not a fan of hate radio left, or right. But to be completely honest. I didn't think the show this week was all that bad. The combination of Yvonne, and Denny had a lot of potential. The combination of Yvonne, and Jimmy had a lot of potential. The common denominator here is Yvonne Monet. She is a treasure. Always has been. Great paired with someone, or on her own. CBS should give her a payday, and lock her down like they did Mara. Mara & Monet in the morning would be a good paring. But with a kid I can't seeing Mara wanting to work those hours. Why should she? But who knows?? No, I haven't forgotten Denzil. He's solid, reliable, and funny. He adds a lot to the show.

Dave has a talented on-air staff in Yvonne, Denzil, Mara, Sully,Renee, Margot, and Orff. Let's hope they figure out the morning show question.

Well said radio k! The common denominator (Yvonne) has been a great add to the Dave staff. I've caught her a few times on the weekends and she holds her own quite well...Mara and Monet would be the dream team of morning radio in my book!

If only they'd give the Rev. Andy more chances. He knows nothing about sports and yet I'm sure he'd sound better than Zakk would on the pre-game show. Who the heck are the Fellcuns anyway?

I was on vacation and missed this, but I think it's kind of cheap to knock Shaeffer for his guests. It's not like he's the producer or has any clout to book decent people as a fill-in. Just my .02.

Then we should blame Zakk's producer for his guests right? Oh that's right, he's the producer. I can't wait to hear how Will Ohman is doing? Do you think Zakk will book a 19th string Falcon player this week?

What about Jimmy Baron? He got A-level guests for his one week. Do you think Wheeler (Wachs, me) said, "Yo Jimmy, ease it back a bit"?

Wheeler(Wachs, I)...... not Wheeler,(Wachs, me.)
Keep making mistakes like that and people will think you're a member of the unwashed. (Babtist)
I think Zakk has done well on the Falcons broadcasts. He seems to be in his element when doing sports.

Forgive my deplorable grammar, I am a victim of the Chicago Public School.

BTW, what is a "Babtist"?
