John Gambling announces retirement

John Gambling just announced that his last day on WOR will be December 20th. He says the main reason is to change his lifestyle by not having to get up in the middle of the night. He says the decision is entirely his own. He will spend the winter in Florida and then decide what to do next, if anything.

I'll miss the show a lot. Unlike so many other radio hosts he's leaving at the absolute top of his game.

A little arrogance I can take. My fear is that they'll replace Gambling with one of the babbling babes who have filled in for him recently.

Simone would be a good transition, especially since so many other changes will be taking place at WOR almost simultaneously. It would give listeners a sense of stability. I can't imagine that Simone would want to get up in the middle of the night five days a week for very long.

imagine if Randi Rhodes is aired on WOR. (not in mornings). She is carrried by
clear channnel/ Premiere network. She's now on WWRL early evening. She rambles &
often makes no sense.

I doubt clear channnel would team up Simone with Leslie Gold, Hilarie Barsky, etc.
But, it might be entertaining in a perverse way.

the WOR press release says a search willl begin to find the new WOR morning show.

( corporate BS from cheap, queer channel)

Change of Management

I hear Rush ( ugh) and Hannity ( another ugh) moving to Wor 710, so
Im my mind they are going to make a major shakeup all around.

Please dont give the am shift to Simone

Simone is not a good candidate for any regular shift. He is the Luis Sojo of radio. A decent utility man that can come through in a pinch, but not an everyday player, and certainly not a superstar. Pull him off the bench when you need a .250 hitter to single someone over to 3rd. Plug him in when someone's on vacation, and when everyone's tired of his schtick after 2 weeks he goes back on the bench.

And if the goal is to lower the demo from 65 to death at WOR, Simone in the morning, talking about his favorite Milton Berle and Soupy Sales moments isn't the way to do it.

apparently Simone said on WOR today he would not want to get up early to do am---drive.
Could WOR try to re-unite Curtis & Kuby or is clear channnel too cheap to try that?
Could Jodi Applegate be possible? Or is she more into TV ?

Lol, I made that analogy on here a few months ago.

It doesn't really matter who they plug-in to that slot -nothing will reverse the terminal decline of that audience.

And I doubt it really matters. That frequency was bought by C-C when 770 was taken in a package deal by a rival with it's own syndication products.

Recently 710 is #23 (6+). In 3-4 years it won't even register.

Funny I should read this. I used to wake up to "Rambling With Gambling" in the 50's-60's (the father probably). He would occasionally have HIS father on! I haven't heard WOR in over 40 years so I don't know what the current Gambling's show was like. I guess he doesn't have offspring who want to continue the dynasty...

With Gambling's retirement will Mrs. Hamburg be next to leave ? In her late 70s, Joan has been on New York radio for forty years, currently in the Noon slot scheduled for Limbaugh.

someone suggested WOR could re-unite Ross & Wilson. (they were in am--drive on WABC many years ago.)
I'm sure many odd suggestions willl surface in the coming weeks.
Ross Britain is now in am--drive on WOGL Phillly. Brian Wilson does filll--in talk work for various stations I think.

Here's a fresh idea... instead of rehashing an old show from 30 years ago, let's try something new!!! Good grief, everyone moans about radio being stale, and so many of you just vomit up old ideas from 3 decades ago or more.
