Opinions on WRKO...

Howie was relevant in 2007 (7 years ago, BTW... a lifetime in radio.) Today, you're confusing relevance with "stuck between a rock and a hard place." What else was WRKO going to do? If you stay the course, you don't have to make tough decisions in the short term. However, it doesn't help you in the long term, as evidenced by what's happening today.

If I were the owner of an AM station with no format of value, I'd be looking to unload the station to whoever would buy it and cut my losses, 'cause those stations aren't getting any more valuable. Prices will only continue to decrease. If there were a format of value, I'd work on transitioning it to more relevant delivery platforms (See WEEI.)

Is Howie's sales power the same as it was 8 years ago? I doubt it. He's relevant to "the choir." Those who look, think, and act just like him. He's not relevant to anyone else, and that choir isn't growing. Do you truly believe Howie Carr has the ability to grow? I don't.

You have some good points.Don't know if
Ent. would put RKO up for sale (they could
do same with EEI AM but they get paid to
run ESPN there). Btw Mark W says WCAP
980 picking up Ordway's Big Show, already
on WGAM/WGHM 900/1250 and WSMN
1590.WCAP also running Jeff Santos
7-10 pm Mon-Thu
.In 2007 RKO still had 96.9 for competition
as well as 1200 (Jan 10 till Aug of 12). Now
it's the sole all talk (politics etc)
station in town and they do intend
to stay local on PMD

Howie's chumpline no longer sponsored...
Wonder if he'll buy time to be on a station
like 1510 as Santos did. WCRN will cover
some areas.

what is any AM in this market worth?

IMHO there are only 3 good signals ( and I use the term loosely) in the market, 680, 850, 1030.

The rest are rim shot, signal hampered, dolla a holla stations.

WEEI AM 850, now running ESPN, near zero showing in any book, are they making enough to keep the transmitter on and the tower lights lit? The taxes on the tower location? (are they alone on that farm or is there di-plex going on)

What would you put on that station? I can't think of anything.

WRKO... the station is sinking faster than the Titanic, weekend is all paid shill programming, the best show they will have is Barry Armstrongs Financial Exchange, Kuhner is an idiot, Carr is their bread and butter..and the bread is stale.

They have NOBODY in the wings to replace Howie, the plan for McSreech to be his designated fill in fell apart as soon as it was announced... Feinberg? I don't even know what he is up to these days but it seems WRKO is done with him, and besides he would have to drop 100 IQ points to be able to relate to Howies core audience..assuming they stick around at all.

what's next? ESPN Desportes?

Value? not a lot

WBZ AM, only news/talker in the market, great signal, ranks high in the PPM, high labor costs, facing being the last station of any importance on the AM band in Boston... problem is that the younger demographic is not going to news radio anymore, news is internet based if they care at all, weather on the 3's...we have an app for that... traffic... shows up on my GPS or navigation app, no need to tune in anymore. Still has value... and will stay on AM until 104.1 0r 103.3 completely tank and there is no format to put there....

What do you do with any AM station?

that begets the next question....if you are the NEW owner...what do you do with it. (And how much would you pay to do it?)

That's why Entercom and Howie have come to this current arrangement.

Didn't some national (and out of work) host fill in for him recently? I recall tuning in and hearing some recognizable nationald name doing the show maybe a month ago? ANyone remember who he is/was?

Keep doing what you are doing?.......as long as you can pay the bills?

So is the end of Howie's contract on Halloween? @bostonradio tweets:

>>Howie Carr goes as 'indentured servant' this Friday. The mean and tough streets of Wellesley will never be the same.

Howie's howiecarrshow.com site got a bit of a makeover including this banner

http://howiecarrshow.com/newwebsiteadmin/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/HowieCarrShowBanner.png

As has been said, supposedly 11/17 is launch date and RKO won't be aboard but I'd think the rest of his 15 or so-station network will be. (All in New England except for one
daytimer or 1,000 watt signal or something in Shell Lake, Wisc.)
I think Kuhner is doing election coverage tomorrow night. What's odd is the RKO site mentions the Kuhner election night party at the Hard Rock but under
Tue Nov 4 it lists "Mark Levin" as being on 7-10 pm. Really...? I would think it would be elec coverage, right?
Since it mentions sponsorship, I would think it WOULD be on air.
>>Join Jeff Kuhner on Election Night, from 7pm-11pm, for a party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Faneuil Hall presented by Bill Kelly Financial and brought to you by Perfect Smiles.

Hearing 830 and 1510 will simulcast B Herald Radio at 6 pm tomorrow night and supp. WRKO won't be doing coverage, unless it's a live remote of that Kuhner thing

But now we see WRKO's site lists Avi Nelson doing Election Coverage tonight. Perhaps with cut ins to Kuhner's party at the Hard Rock.

I listened to the open of Avi's coverage, where he thanked everyone who voted for "the good guys" and told those who didn't want to vote for his "good guys" to stay home and forget about it. Sigh... I used to have a grudging respect for Avi back in the day, but he's just another lolbertarian stooge these days.

As I commented to a friend the other day, when Dale Dorman passed, WRKO should have shut down their transmitter out of respect, and now that they've lost Howie, they should just keep it shut down on general principle.

Apparently you don't understand sarcasm when you hear it?

And make a multimillion dollar donation to CBS, Greater Media and Clear Channel would accomplish what?

Seriously...WRKO had a great heyday with Talk in the late 80's (Ted & Janet, Burns, Williams, Brudnoy and Larry King lineup).

There just aren't that many good talk hosts around anymore.

Also the talk format everywhere (not just Boston) is underperforming....a result of the new PPM methodology, aging demos on the AM band and other things.

Back to our age old question for those who criticize. If you owned WRKO, what would you do with it?

(Shutting off the transmitter is the equivalent of throwing a few million dollars out the window of your station wagon while on the turnpike, and is not an option for the sane!) ;-)

See other thread..on the day the Bangor
Daily News says a local man is to
produce Howie's "national" show..that is to
start next Mon but not on RKO, Entercom's
Phil Zachary said Howie was injured
in a car crash today and is in the
hospital for observation..and off air
til he recovers....a ruse? Or misfortune...

Apparently I'm not the only person whose sarcasm-detector is on the blink? :)

I was actually paraphrasing an old Imus line about somebody - it might have been Barnicle? - that having them on-the-air was cheaper then sending an engineer out to turn off the transmitter...

Speaking of Mr. Cribbs, that was a sweet troll he threw out about how Menino's death cost Coakley the election - think he's auditioning to show how edgy he can be? :)

I'm sorry, are you skipping? Do you need to be gently thumped on the side like an old jukebox?

Please note the title of the thread is "Opinions on WRKO". I have offered mine, in a semi-serious fashion.

When you post your own thread on "What would you do if you owned WRKO (besides drinking heavily)?", I'll be certain to give the wide berth it deserves. Now if you're through junior-moderating, I bid you good day.
