Likelihood of The View cancellation?

So a good part of this season is up. Sherri Shepherd has opined ratings are down, essentially jealousy essentially that her contract was not renewed in favor of Rosie O'Donnell who is likely getting paid much more, and ratings aren't up. Sherri voiced her opinions on Fox/Elisabeth Hasselback interview.

What would be the likelihood of ABC cancelling it by January or so?

Whoopi and Rosie O' are two heavyweights and not easily replaceable (for younger women) by ABC at this point, and ageism would be very present. It might be easier and cheaper cancelling it, although it would leave ABC even more devoid in it's daytime. ABC is banking on Tyra Banks for next season with just a syndicated distributed from ABC, but that just affects one hour, but maybe it could be a 11am replacement.

I have a couple of questions on ABC Daytime:
1. ABC O&Os are the primary clearance carrier of 'Rachael Ray' but her show is distributed by CBS. I don't know if Rachael is indefinitely locked with that arrangement, but wouldn't it make sense to eliminate one middle man, for ABC to relaunch a new Rachael Ray show through ABC Domestic Distribution?
2. Moving 'Live with Kelly and Michael': Any possiblity this could be moved to 10am Eastern for ABC to clear a second hour of GMA? This way ABC wouldn't lose a network hour.
3. Natalie Morales. It was reported that Natalie Morales might want out of Today show. Any room for her on ABC somewhere?

4. If the ABC O&Os are content on picking up 'Rachael Ray' from CBS distribution, what if it also chose to pick up 'The Doctors'? In New York, the only clearance is WLNY. In Philly, KYW clears it at 9am. I'm sure CBS would be happy if WPVI cleared it at 2pm (for example) as that would be an upgrade moving. the ABC O&Os might benefit in that it would blend with it's daytime lineup as a Dr.Oz like show and not be very costly.

Not very...they just shifted management of the show from ABC Entertainment to ABC News. I expect a reformatting of the show by January, but they haven't even begun running the show yet. Contracts are in place through the rest of the season.

Not an uncommon situation. The CBS distribution came with their purchase years ago of King World. CBS distribution shouldn't be confused with the CBS TV network. Not the same thing. From the ABC station perspective, the primary goal is to carry top-rated shows, not show ownership. If Rachel Ray gets great ratings, or access to other top-rated shows, then it doesn't matter what company handles distribution.

Although she is likeable (and I like her show over other daytime options), ratings of her show aren't hot. I know there are few FOX O&Os that carry 'Live with Kelly and Michael' but in the latter, that show has stronger ratings and it affects fewer FOX owned stations. Other than that, I don't see FOX carrying NBC produced daytime shows, and the other majors carrying shows produced from other big 4 network competitors.

ABC just upped 'Rachael Ray' clearances to WLS and the west coast ABC O&O stations.

There is obviously some profit increases if it was a direct ABC network show or a distributed through ABC domestic distribution. Otherwise, why would ABC be in the daytime business at all? Since she has the likeability, that's why I wonder if ABC could produce a show for her directly, since ABC likes her enough to atleast clear her show on more O&Os.

I suppose they will try ABC News direction out to March, see if there is any increases in ratings. I just question if they can rehaul the anchor situation so quickly again.

Big companies don't always work that way. Carrying Rachel's show gets them access to some other shows, and keeps them away from the competition, and that's what matters to the stations. I'm sure ABC corporate would prefer it to be in-house, but the stations are the ones selling the time here. As long as all the ABC shows get cleared too, there is no conflict.

The sooner the better. One restaurant I go to usually has "The View" on, though sometimes it's "The Price Is Right" and I'd rather have that. Could be worse; last time it was some country music video channel.

Where I get my hair cut Rachael Ray used to be on at the time I usually went. It was a CBS affiliate, but now I wouldn't know where it was. The last time I saw it was when I ate at a retaurant I don't go to often, and I couldn't say what channel it was on.

Now there's one of these fluff programs sort of like the "Today" show, followed by a home improvement program. And it turns out it's on the CBS affiliate.

Some days my barber is on CNN.

I'd like to see The View be cancelled and replaced with game shows, but I don't know how well that would hold up against TPIR. Even a talk show along the lines of Kelly and Michael would be better.

In our market (Atlanta), currently The View gets four times the ratings of The Price Is Right. How game shows would do against Price today, were ABC to cancel The View, would be quite a question. When Price moved to 11 AM Eastern in 1979, ABC had Family Feud, All-Star Blitz, Double Talk, Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak and Bargain Hunters go against it (all other shows were either sitcoms or magazine shows). The latter four did not last long at all.

In 2012, WLS-TV outbidded WGN-TV for Live With Kelly & Michael, because the station manager that's there now wanted that show on at 9am, rather than have Windy City Live & Live With Kelly & Michael competing with each other. For that, it worked in WLS-TV's favor, as the audience moved from WGN-TV to WLS-TV for the 9am timeslot. Meanwhile, Windy City Live at 11am has not done as well since moving out of the 9am timeslot (it wasn't doing as well at 9am, but better than at 11am when compared to Oprah at 9am). Had Emily Barr stayed at WLS-TV, Live with Kelly & Michael would still be on WGN-TV, as she was committed to Windy City Live. Since Rachael Ray moved to WLS-TV at 1pm, from WGN-TV at 10am, I hear ratings are mixed. The same station manager also wanted Rachael Ray for the same reason he wanted Live With Kelly & Michael, have some of the same shows that other ABC O&O stations carry. WBBM-TV carried her show for a while, but dropped it, due to low ratings in the afternoon, & couldn't pre-empt network programming in the morning hours to try it there. When WGN-TV took it over, & put her show on in the 10am slot, it did well for them. I wonder if Rachael Ray works best in the morning hours in Chicago. If The View gets cancelled, maybe WLS-TV could move Rachael Ray to 10am, & put that new talk show The FAB on at 1pm. I just wish they'd bring back the 11am news.

I could eventually see ABC adding another hour of GMA and either making the 11 AM ET slot local (Where Kelly and Michael could go) or starting a new talk show in place of The View. Although I'd like to see game shows I doubt if that would happen.

The View isn't going to be canceled without a fight, and if one more reset occurs, it will happen. Going back to 1997 when Carolyn & Marilyn: Real Friends was the epoch of failure for ABC's late mornings after Home and Mike & Maty made those shows SNL-worthy laughingstocks, The View was the last chance for ABC to keep the 11am slot as more stations shoved the shows in the slots to overnights or didn't carry them at all. It worked, and ABC is not about to give up on the show lest their affiliates get another opening after the flop of Katie put 3pm up for grabs for them. In many markets though, it's Wendy Williams who has taken advantage of The View's woes and is topping it where the shows compete in the same slot among women 18-49.

The View isn't going to be canceled without a fight,

I agree. The show has become a victim of its own success, with imitators becoming its greatest adversaries. So to cancel it would be just giving up to the new competition.

The problem isn't the show, but the execution. It needs to be reinvented in a way that will help it revive its place in the minds of viewers.

Anyone know how 'The Real' is doing nationally? In the Jackson, Miss. market, it runs on Fox 40 at 9 a.m. opposite Kelly & Michael on ABC 16, Rachael Ray on CBS 12 and America's Court on MyTV 35.

"The Talk" seems to be much more entertaining.

I was stuck in a doctor's waiting room that had the TV tuned to "The View". After a few minutes, I put my earbuds in and turned my MP3 player up load enough to drown it out and picked up a magazine. And saying that "The Talk" is more entertaining than "The View" is like saying Moe was the smartest Stooge.

Although I care nothing about seeing them, I'd rather see shows like The View or The Talk than the trash talk like Springer and Maury, courtroom shows, or infomercials. But with those choices I'd rather be watching cable or Netflix :p

Keep in mind that these daytime talk shows are primarily aiming at women.

More specifically, they are aimed at stupid women.

And there's yet another example of saying Moe was the smartest Stooge!

But he was. At least on screen. Maybe in real life it was different.
