Local New Year's Eve coverage

KING-5 (NBC) in Seattle is airing New Year's at the Needle once again, at 11:35PM local time. Will also be on NWCN (Northwest Cable News) throughout the northwest. Last year the fireworks were horrible due to nasty fog. This year should be better. And I enjoy watching Pacific time fireworks rather than that 3-hour tape delay they call "Ryan Seacrest Rockin Eve".

KDKA is also doing "First Night Pittsburgh" again, and WBZ airs "First Night" from Boston with fireworks at midnight.
KSNV/KLAS/KTNV all do fireworks from Las Vegas casinos at midnight.

Charlotte's CBS and ABC affiliates used to do the raising of the crown (as opposed to the dropping of the ball) at Independence Center downtown. I don't know if they still do that but my plan is to watch Ryan Seacrest drop the ball. If Charlotte's station won't let me do that--and I haven't heard they won't--I can plug in one of the TVs with an antenna and watch an ABC affiliate doesn't know the meaning of the word pre-empt.

WSB, WAGA and WXIA will split-screen with ABC, Fox and NBC to cover the Big Peach drop at Underground Atlanta along with the ball drop at Times Square. WGCL (CBS) will most likely stay with Letteman on full screen (but they have been known to split-screen to cover local bulletins, so who knows?).

How come they can't have a couple anchors out there at the Peach Drop? Or do they mute the Times Square audio and have anchors counting down to the new year in Atlanta?
I don't see Beale Street's guitar drop on WKNO's schedule this year. A shame.

Except that WAGA will probably live stream the Peach Drop on their YouTube page this year.

Meanwhile, KRON (San Francisco) as always will have "New Year's Live!"; they and KING are the only two West Coast-flavored NYE shows after that dreck KDOC and Jamie Kennedy had a couple years ago!

I checked the Mountain Time stations on Zap2it, and they're all airing ABC and NBC's countdowns at 11:30pm MT, two hours behind. The 10:30-11:30 hour is filled with Christmas specials, sitcom reruns or infomercials. At least most of us here in the Central Time Zone get to see the ball drop live.

From the "Most Inexplicable Network Program Pre-Emption" thread:

re: Central Time zone stations delaying late night shows. There is one less hour for syndicated programming before 7pm in the Central time zone than there are for the Eastern and Pacific time zones due to the fact that network programs start at 7pm there. Stations see the 10:35-11:35pm as their last chance to run syndicated fare before midnight. Any TV stations doing this? Which ones?

Of course, some CT stations are regular late night programming "live", but delay the New Year's Eve specials. As hipman2 said, "Any TV stations doing this? Which ones?"

no local (or even regional CST) New Year's Eve show on any Kansas City station, it's either live from the East coast at 11PM local time or delayed by an hour from the East coast at midnight local time, KCTV did local countdown in the 90s from the Crown Center Hyatt (now a Sheraton), why no syndicated countdown shows for CST stations too cheap for a local countdown show?

Go to Wichita and KSCW will air the "Big D NYE" show from Dallas, fed from WFAA.
Kansas City calls their celebration "NYE Live" for the midnight countdown. From their website:
"Party-goers can look forward to exclusive access to over 10 bars and nightclubs, all-inclusive food and drink packages, live music, great DJ's, NYE-themed party favors, champagne toasts, confetti cannons, and the city's most anticipated countdown to Midnight – complete with a Times Square ball drop and fireworks!"
Now why can't KCTV take that coverage...seriously, they can provide a local celebration with a couple of KCTV news anchors hosting. They do it in Seattle, and San Francisco (on KRON)...

Crainebo, are other northwestern stations airing the show? When I lived in the Yakima Valley they didn't, which stunned me considering the broadcast is well done. For that matter, why hasn't an enterprising network done a West Coast only show?

Every station in Memphis and Jackson, TN is staying with their network's programming except that WMC NBC 5 in Memphis is carrying the Moon Pie Drop in Mobile AL, which is carried by most Raycom owned stations, from 11:30 PM to just after Midnight CT. After that they will carry NBC programming delayed by 30 minutes.

WKNO PBS 10 in Memphis is carrying a delayed broadcast of the University of Memphis vs. Houston basketball game instead of the guitar drop from Beale Street. Perhaps they weren't able to make a deal for this year?

I, too, am bummed by the lack of coverage from Beale Street this year (and last year, too, if memory serves). Seems like it was carried statewide over PBS stations. I know that we have watched it from here in Nashville in the past. Not sure how they handled that coverage in East TN, where they are on eastern time, and thus, an hour ahead of us.

Back in the day, channel 5 had the best Memphis coverage, simulcast over FM 100, if I recall. I guess that New Year's Eve coverage from Memphis has really slipped in recent years.

Meanwhile, here in Nashville, we are getting some national coverage this year, apparently for the first time ever, but lower Broad (judging from last year's footage) is about as crowded as the start line for the Country Music Marathon! (Which also now uses lower Broad as its starting area.)

NWCN (Northwest Cable News) is feeding New Year's at the Needle on cable throughout the Northwest, from Anchorage (north), to Crescent City (south), to eastern Idaho and western Montana (east).
Checking KGW's schedule, they decided to go with that 3-hour-delayed Carson Daly show.

There used to be a syndicated show in the 1990s called "New Year's Live!", which I think originated from San Francisco/KRON. The show is only aired in San Francisco/San Jose today. But they used to show San Diego, Seattle, SF and I believe Los Angeles displays.

The national shows do air Los Angeles stuff, I THINK, but it's all taped in the previous days, or early in the evening. I think the last time Seattle was seen nationwide was probably the start of the millennium. But I feel blessed to live 2 hours away from a local TV celebration. We need more of that!
Yakima has a Sir Mix a Lot New Year's bash tonight, and Tri-Cities has a fireworks display at midnight. KIMA/KEPR could air that instead of the Letterman rerun - it would be more fun to watch as it is almost local, but I'll take the Seattle display over the 3 hour old Ryan Seacrest.

Just watched WFAA's Big D NYE fireworks - they were not bad at all. Lots of people!
KTVB-7 Boise, ID is airing the full Idaho Potato Drop at midnight MT as well - 21 min from when this post was made!

I am truly glad that I don't have a clue what was on local television around midnight. I was in my hometown's central square listening to an outstanding concert, drinking champagne, watching the local symbol rise (we "rise to the occasion" at my hometown), followed by fireworks and more great music.

I feel sorry for anyone who had to stay home and watch the New Year's festivities on TV. What a sad way to greet the New Year!

I believe Channel 5's broadcast with FM 100 usually was from Overton Square and eventually moved to Beale Street when it had been redeveloped. When they dropped the broadcast it moved to Channel 24 and Rock 103. I think when 24 went to ABC they moved the broadcast to channel 30 for a few years, and there was a period when it wasn't broadcast until Channel 10 picked it up in recent years. I don't know what happened this year.

I have compiled a list of which ABC and NBC affiliates in the Central Time Zone will carry their respective networks’ New Year’s celebrations live and which will air them on tape delay. I based my findings on Zap2it listings. If anyone disagrees with these findings, reply to this post. I left out FOX because their show is always delayed in Central Time, although some stations may air it live.

That's too bad. Big D was a good celebration...I streamed it last year thanks to WFAA. It was syndicated in 3 or 4 states in the south, I know KSCW Wichita aired it, as did some station in Shreveport, LA.
Maybe WLS will stream their Chicago fireworks online. Central and Mountain Time need more than just tape-delayed Times Square. Even CNN doesn't air anything live from the Pacific time zone...you have to be the lucky one that gets Northwest Cable News (or can get KING-TV Seattle on cable) and can watch New Year's at the Needle. It's as if Times Square is the only American celebration of the New Year.
