They preempted that for this?

Because they dont want to?
So they can show paid programs all afternoon?
The last few weeks I've seen my local CBS, which is owned BY CBS, have paid programs Saturday afternoon for 2 hours until network programming comes on at say 2PM CDT.

WREG in Memphis has been terrible in recent years about filling non-sports times on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with infomercials. They already had infomercials scheduled for the 2 or 3 hours before the golf coverage was supposed to start this weekend. CBS definitely doesn't need to be turning even more time over to the local stations to do nothing but fill it with infomercials.

If it's like it usually is, there will be some weekends between now and when Football starts in the Fall that CBS will have no sports of any kind and guess what a lot of stations like WREG will fill that time with: Infomercials. :p

CBS, NBC, and ABC all need to come up with programing for weekend afternoons when there aren't any major sports events going on. I know it probably happens on all of them at one time or another, but bring back shows like Wide World of Sports, put on movies, repeats of prime time shows, ANYTHING to keep local stations from filling the time with infomercials!!! :p

Oh I agree. My CBS (WCCO) which again is O&O has 2 hours of paid programs tomorrow (noon-2) and 3 hours (11-2) tomorrow before network programming is on. I looked at next Saturday when NBC has the golf (British Open) so CBS has no network programming. So what does CCO put on? 6 HOURS of paid programs! Yup from 11am-5pm its paid programs. I see both KIMT Mason City and KEYC Mankato are showing movies...but since in Minneapolis other stations got the rights to them WCCO is going the paid program route.

Sad thing is all the networks here do that on weekends. Both the Independent (KSTC) and My29 (WFTC) have like 12 hours of paid programs on weekends (3a-3p) with the exception of E/I programming. Heck even KMSP FOX 9 (again an O&O) on non network program days (like most Saturday afternoons) they have paid programs from 11am-3pm then shows syndicated "weekend edition" shows like TMZ and Judge Judy before news.

I checked the schedule for next week, and sure enough, WREG has 5 hours of infomercials on Saturday 7-16. Sunday 7-17 isn't quite as bad since they have LPGA golf, but from 11 AM to 2 PM is still infomercials. Even bringing back Ted Mack's Amateur Hour would be better than this!!! :p

Not inexplicable per se, but with this weekend's Greenbrier Classic golf tournament canceled due to severe flooding in West Virginia, CBS is re-airing 2014's final round on Saturday and last year's final round on Sunday. Hmmm, why won't CBS give back the time slots to the affiliates?

Probably not their call; the PGA holds control over the timeslot and they won't just give it back to CBS without heavy financial penalties, the advertisers would be asking for full refunds, and the idea of pretty much saying "hey West Virginia, sorry you got flooded, but we're giving the time back to the affiliates to air terrible Sony syndicated films" would be a PR nightmare. At least here the advertisers get some attention and the Greenbrier will be able to build tourist momentum for their reopening, even for rerun golf. There's also probably the idea that CBS doesn't want Fox and the LPGA to outrate them this weekend, as horribly sexist (but true) as that may be.

As of now both KTSP and WCCO in Minneapolis are locally preempting network programing due to confirmed large and damaging tornadoes within the viewing are. One of the cities threatened is St Cloud with is a major hub about 75 moles northwest of Minneapolis along Interstate Highway 94

Fixed.

WCCO went until 8
KSTP was on Network programming at 7:10 when I checked

KMSP and the 'king weather terrorist' Eee-on pre-empted TMZ and he pretty much implied that if you were tuning in to watch TMZ screw you I'm staying on the air until as he put it the tornado is gone. However a little thing at 7 o'clock called Network programming over rode them.

These weren't radar indicated tornadoes FWIW. Two F2 tornadoes did touch down in parts of the MSP DMA and apparently did some pretty significant damage to the cities of Watkins and Litchfield which are west of Minneapolis/St. Paul

I live in Suburban Minneapolis so I'm fully aware of the tornadoes ;)
My dad's buddy lives about 3-4 miles outside of Watkins and thank goodness they didn't have any real damage

I know I mentioned that my CBS (WCCO) is doing 6 hours of paid programs tomorrow but I see 2 unique things here
-6 of 7 commercial stations have paid programs from noon-1. The exception is NBC which has golf (I exclude Ion as they are a national feed). Last week all 6 had paid programs from noon-1
-in the guide tomorrow at 12:30PM 5 of the 6 stations (CBS, ABC, FOX, MY, Independent) have the SAME paid program listed (making $$ flipping houses). CW doesn't have that title (it says paid programming)

I meant to post this earlier but this thread fell down the list fast. During the non-sports times on CBS on weekends WBBJ 7.3 in Jackson carries Me TV instead. That's definitely better than infomercials. I don't see why WREG couldn't simulcast Antenna TV during those times, other they think they'll make more money off of infomercials. Never mind that they're getting little or no viewers.

different situation. WBBJ-DT3's secondary affiliation is with MeTV and if I understood correctly unless there is news or network programming MeTV fills the rest of the time.

But looking further I see WREG is Tribune owned so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible for them to do that. But I could see the downside where folks would complain "why can't you show AntennaTV more on WREG?" (for the folks who on satellite don't get AntennaTV)

on a sidenote last weekend I guess our CW (WUCW 23) decided to lay off a few of the paid programs and show Ring of Honor Wrestling (since WUCW is Sincalir owned) FIVE times in 36 hours (the same show)
2PM Saturday
11PM Saturday <----normal time slot
4AM Sunday
5PM Sunday
1AM Monday<---normal repeat slot

Again not really "Inexplicable"...but tomorrow My29 WFTC Minneapolis will be delaying network programming until midnight so they can show the MN United (NASL Soccer) game. They have a contract to show all MN United games live. The "friendlies" (or whatever they call them where you play someone outside of your league) have not been televised.

Again not "inexplicable" but as you know on Friday Big Fox is broadcasting A-Fraud err A Rod's last game. Since the Vikes preseason game is in KMSP FOX 9 the game will be seen on co-owned My29 (WFTC)

Some areas wont see it due to carrying the Vikes game and having no other option the FOX station wanted to utilize (or they just couldn't)...local areas are
Mankato, MN (KEYC-DT2)..no other option. Only station in market and -1 is CBS
Fargo and Eastern ND (KVRR/KBRR/KNRR/KJRR)...didnt want to use AntennaTV sub
Sioux City, IA (KPTH)...has a My sub but not utilizing it
Duluth, MN (KQDS)...actually is showing the Green Bay game (Vikes are on ABC WDIO)...again didnt want to use AntennaTV sub
Western ND (subchannel on NBC North Dakota..KFYR mothership)..no other option (NBC is on -1)

There are somewhere around 20 FOX stations carrying NFL games Friday night...including the six posted above

These FOX affiliates will also be pre-empting A-Roid's last game for football (specifically the Lions):
Cadillac, MI (WFQX)...no other option (sister station and -2 is CBS)
Detroit, MI (WJBK)...has three subchannels but not utilizing any of them
Grand Rapids, MI (WXMI)...will be cleared in GR on WXMI-DT3
Lansing, MI (WSYM)...has two subchannels but not utilizing either

WSMH (Flint) and WBKB-DT2 (Alpena) will clear it as the Lions are on WNEM in Flint and aren't seen on an in-market station in Alpena (WFQX is on cable there)

A-Rod's last game is preempting a lot of programming on KCYU/KFFX tomorrow. The second run of The People's Court, both Mike & Molly's, both Modern Family's and both Two Broke Girls reruns are gone. The game's end time is 7:30, and they are showing an infomercial instead of 2 Broke Girls. They will not be preempted to overnight so they can air their 5 hour block of infomercials during that time (ugh).
