2016 Rio Olympics on NBC

This article makes clearer that NBC's stream will be delayed as well. Which sounds stupid, but remember that NBC is owned by Comcast and they have little interest in hastening video's move to the Internet...
EXCEPT there's still NBCSN where the opening ceremonies can be aired live (What is IT doing on that day ??)

Cheers & 73 :)

They have to insert commercials, but I wonder if airing the Opening Ceremonies live will interfere with local news on their affiliates in the Eastern and Central time zones, and NBC doesn't want to do that? Rio is one hour ahead of New York, the same time zone as the Maritime Provinces of Canada. I believe the ceremonies begin at 8 PM in Rio, which is 7 PM in NYC, 6 PM in Chicago, and 4 PM in LA (delayed even further in the Mountain and Pacific time zones?).
A 5:00 PM start would be nothing new (Nor any big deal) for KUSA 9 as they can run news @ 4:00 PM on 9 followed by NBC Nightly News live @ 4:30 PM & then the Olympics @ 5:00 PM

KUSA 9 can run the 5:00 PM news on sister station KTVD 20 during the Olympics as well

Of course, not every NBC affiliate has options like KUSA does but in those situations, there's always their website & app

Cheers & 73 :)

NBC wants change at Rio opening ceremony to get better ratings

In an attempt to boost ratings, NBC has reportedly asked the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee to change the order of the countries in the Parade of Nations.

Because the United States starts with an E in Portuguese (it’s known as the Estados Unidos), the U.S. is scheduled to walk early in the ceremony, causing NBC to worry about its audience for the Aug. 5 Opening Ceremonies.

According to Brazilian newspaper Agora São Paulo, NBC is concerned that the US being presented so early in the ceremony, scheduled to take place at the Maracanã Stadium on August 5, will result in reduced television audiences.

The American broadcaster has therefore submitted a request for the US to be moved to the end of the parade with countries being introduced in accordance with the English language.

One can hardly blame them. Considering NBC pays more than all of the other broadcasters combined for their rights, the Rio Organizing Committee might be well served to listen to their concerns.

Where I live at least "Jeopardy" will air. Alex pointed out that even though these will be reruns, he hoped people watching the show on stations airing the Olympics would search and find the show and keep watching.

Given that the Olympic Village isn't even completed, including the rail system, maybe that extra hour is really for editing out the litter, trash and general disaster that is Rio.

This is why I was so disappointed that NBC signed a long term agreement with the IOC. I hate the way NBC broadcasts the olympics. No reason for them to not have a live clean feed of the opening ceremonies. They own 20 networks. Put it on one of them commercial free and them show the edited family friendly version on the network.

NBC is inserting commercials during Olympic soccer matches

The Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics haven’t even started yet and NBC’s coverage of the Games has already left a bad taste in some people’s mouths. Over the first two days of the women’s and men’s Olympic soccer tournaments, NBC has been inserting commercials while matches are taking place.

NBC isn’t doing this in every match but they have periodically inserted a commercial on certain matches. Wednesday, among other matches, a commercial was shown during the Zimbabwe vs. Germany women’s match on the USA network. Thursday, in the first day of the men’s tournament, the Fiji vs. South Korea match was interrupted with a commercial in the first half.

Normally, when someone watches soccer on ESPN, NBC, Fox, beIN or any other sports network in the United States, it’s largely been accepted that you do not show a commercial during the actual match. Soccer does not have natural breaks for commercials and therefore there is a risk of missing a big moment or even a goal while in commercial even if that means going over 45 minutes at a time without showing a commercial. Over two days, NBC hasn’t missed any big moments or goals but if some are already pissed off that NBC is doing this, imagine the anger if NBC misses a goal.

If they're in commercial during a goal, they'll show it when they return. This actually happens in golf all the time. Quite often live coverage misses a hole in one or some other big play, especially in the early rounds when there are more golfers. Same thing with soccer. Who cares about Zimbabwe or Fiji? Let me know if NBC misses a Team USA goal. Otherwise, I don't care.

Just a thought. Are these soccer matches delayed by one hour due to the time
zone difference??? Perhaps NBC is showing on a few minutes delay if not a full
hour. That way they can insert commercials avoiding goals or other times of
more intense interest....

And this is why I wish I still had the CBC to watch...

Major team sports are almost always shown live in all time zones (especially Team USA games)

There is so little scoring action in soccer that you are really at government lottery odds to miss seeing one BUT when soccer was broadcast in year's past they did air some games with split screen similar to what NASCAR does. Purists are going to complain about it but at least you won't miss that once-in-a-game goal or that Wounded Duck Takeoff the scorer emulates.

Then people would complain that they're not seeing the goals scored live.

In no country where soccer is a major sport (and that is over 100 countries) do they interrupt play with commercials. Full commercials are done in post and pre-game shows and at half-time. During play, they use crawls, bugs and such on TV and 5" live reads on radio.

Just imagine if Maradona's break-away run from mid-field to score in the "Goal of the Century" in the '86 World Cup! That goal was played so quickly that there was no way to know that he would take the ball and run through the whole UK defense to score. That is the nature of the game and its appeal; running spots during play would generate enormous ill-will among fans.

Funny you should mention that...I went into a pizza place where they were all watching an Italian team, and the screen was pretty heavily cluttered with ads and content along the bottom and side. The only thing similar might be Bloomberg or CNBC.

NBC wants change at Rio opening ceremony to get better ratings

BTW NBC refuted this story, and the IOC didn't change the order of countries. Team USA came out with the "E" s as expected. Right after a commercial break. The ceremonies were on a 1 hour delay, and it was after 10PM ET/7PM PT when Team USA came out.

Thankfully this isn't an issue on some cable systems; NBC is offering soccer and basketball-only networks featuring only promo loops after each half, which I'm enjoying. NBCSN is showing all the matches live, but there are definitely ways to watch everything with few ads.

The problem with the Olympics though is that the usual soccer ad arrangements in American sports w/MLS and the Premier League where an advertiser can be pasted on the top left-hand corner ('this 9 minutes of soccer action is brought to you by Budweiser') to cover the cost of the match, along with the sideboard advertising is impossible thanks to the IOC. So it's literally NBC having to make the best of a situation it cannot control.

The NBC Olympic Facebook Page is almost wall to wall complaints about commercials. I think the complaints are ridiculous. The IOC charged NBC a LOT of money for the rights. Certainly far more than any other broadcaster and perhaps nearly as much as all of the other countries broadcast partners combined. That has to be paid for somehow. NBC really is offering wall to wall coverage. If one has a cable subscription, there is literally no event you have to miss. I, for one, find the coverage to be pretty impressive.

I thought the Opening Ceremony was overlong. The Brazil Committee could've made it shorter and still had a wonderful presentation. In any case, the production was impressive and a very compelling showcase of Brazilian culture.
