I haven't heard whether or not this particular story is real, but it won't surprise me if it turns out to be fake. As long as news department (and probably sales) suits demand "Live, local, & first" rather than "Live, local, & right," these things will happen.
Same goes for network news operations. Especially network news operations. The most blatant of bad network news coverage, not counting this past Presidential campaign, that I can think of was the Sandy Hook shootings 4 years ago. All speculation at first, with little real news, just so the network common taters could have something to say when they didn't know squat. That wasn't the only one -- even 9/11 had more than its share of that -- but at least to me, that was the worst.
Perhaps this fake news garbage will act as a buffer for real news organizations, and be a good thing in the end. As in, let's make sure we have the correct story. I would be happy to see this.
