2017 Media Predictions

my predictions for 2017:


lots of celebrities will die, that will be a sure thing as we seen celebrity deaths every year since being famous was a thing, but let's hope we don't see a lot of them in 2017 unlike this past year.

Hope you are right but unfortunately as the days come and go not only do we get older but so do the celebrities as well plus we currently have several of them in their 80s and 90s and beyond now too. Even the kids who were on TV back in the 50s are in their 70s today. I do wonder and this goes back to "fake news" which celebrity in 2017 will be the victim of a death hoax though ?? Some years back I do remember seeing on the news about the "death" of Beverly Archer who played Iola Boylen on Mama's Family. Anyway that was a hoax as Beverly herself would put out a video saying that not only was she not dead but gave thanks to her fans for at least thinking of her anyway. I think the same thing happened to Larry Storch as well.

More smaller cable channels such as Pop will close.

Which will be sad because of its previous incarnations as a 24-hour EPG channel.
 
Pop won't close. There will be enough of an audience for Big Brother After Dark, and the same-day reruns of Y&R/Bold and the Beautiful.

Thanks I forgot about him. Same with Zsa Zsa Garbor. For years it was reported that she had "died" but today she finally did.

Another prediction...sometime in 2017 I see a sex scandal involving interns at a station in a top 50 market. Last night a friend of mine on Facebook had received a friend request from a guy who is an intern for one of Denver's religious broadcasters. He in turns tells me to check out this guy's personal website. Wish I didn't as on the website were several photos of him popping balloons in his backyard with his pipe...oh he was nude too. Makes me wonder if TV and radio stations today makes their employees sign moral clauses as part of their contract that is if they sign any contract at all ??

WWE will induct Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson into it's Hall of Fame, but not in the Celebrity wing for his famous work in Hollywood but instead for his career in the WWE that preceded his acting career.

There will always be celebrity deaths, but hopefully very few younger ones dying.

The WWE HOF induction for The Rock is overdue IMO, as he was extremely over during the peak of his WWE run. I wouldn't rule out a Daniel Bryan induction as well.
 
K-Mart will completely shut down. Heck, they shut down MY local store about a week ago (Yakima). Sears will hang by a thread (at least there are enough people still buying Kenmore products).

My local K-Mart finally shut down last week. It managed to hang on years longer than K-Marts in nearby cities of similar size (most of them lost their K-Mart during the early 2000s bankruptcy)

The bad news about K Mart and Sears is they were once huge advertisers. With their financial difficulties, they've cut their ad budget, so there are fewer ads for radio and TV.
 
To bring this "somewhat" back on topic, The tallest building in Chicago was known as The Sears Tower. Of course, that name didn't last. As most know, it now known as the Willis Tower. It also harbors many local media antennas. OK, there is the radio/tv connection. Bingo.

So to continue outside of that, I remember going to my northend Seattle Sears in the 60's and will forever associate it with the smell of popcorn. Yep, they popped fresh popcorn constantly and when us kids went for back to school shopping, that is was we smelled. It is amazing how smells can be as powerful as other memories as we get older. Seriously.

I remember the same smell from Woolworths a decade earlier.
 
Every AM station in America will have a translator, somewhere on the FM dial, mucking up the band some more. Unless they are in the top 25 biggest markets.

The spectrum auction will take at least 10-15% of full-powered TV stations off the air completely. Secondary PBS stations, Spanish networks (outside high Hispanic areas like Los Angeles and Houston), some TBN/Daystar stations and some My Network TV/CW stations might go off completely, or in the case of MNTV/CW, turn into DT2 or 3 subchannels on Big 4 stations.
With the FCC planning on taking out channels 31-50 for DTV use, more DTV stations will take over low-VHF (channels 2-6), thus allowing for more DX/E-skip opportunities.
DTV America will continue building little digital LPTVs with 10 different subchannels throughout the country.

The K-Mart store in east Spokane on Sprague Ave has boomed the entire 12 years that I have lived here. I'm guessing it is the location.
 
- Commercials that look and sound like news stories for windows, alarm systems, law firms, etc. will continue to creep into the commercial breaks of midday newscasts from coast to coast.
 
From the commercials seeming more like news, I am impressed with, I think, WFAA, doing an hour on weekdays with anchor styled set where they feature products and businesses in an interview style. Obviously it is 'sold' but seems in presentation to be more like a feature story. There is not 'selling' on the program but it might conclude with a phone number or website given given at the end of an interview segment. I think this is a clever idea to do a 60 minute program of this type. Nobody is buying 'frequency' to have their segment aired several times in a month, for instance, but more of a one time thing. From a business standpoint, it is interesting to watch and saves the station affiliation fees for a syndicated program that might or might not generate more cash, plus with locally produced, they can sell all the commercial units they want in the hour.

Maybe this is being done elsewhere. If not, it might be a good idea. It seems most interviews are small businesses. A segment might be a new dental procedure that makes what was once a painful ordeal no big deal. They might discuss this with a dentist from the company and offer a phone number or website to learn more. Then a commercial break and the next interview.

Trying to monetize small business in a "news" format is nothing new, but seems to be increasing. Another example is radio morning shows that bill themselves as "newsradio" or "news/talk", but have segments from certain businesses. They usually start with newsy segments, and end with the inevitable "and what is your phone number and website for more info?". One step from an infomercial, except with your trusted local morning hosts.
 
...The auction stands at 84 MHz right now, meaning that if it closes at this stage, the TV band will be 2-36. If it fails, the next attempt will have the TV band at 2-38.

If indeed the auction doesn't close at 84 MHz, perhaps instead of the TV band running from 2 to 38, the FCC might decide that 7 to 38 will be sufficient for broadcast TV, then grandfathering existing ops on channels 2 - 4. Channels 5 and 6 will become the eventual replacement for the 540 - 1700 kHz band. odds?: < 5%

Option two of above would only have channel 6 used for the replacement for the old AM band odds?: < 10%

Another LPFM window will open in 2017. Odds?: < -33.33%

I'm not that optimistic. There is absolutely no talk at all at the FCC or Congress about replacing the old AM band. For there to be ANY chance, it needs to at least be a talking point, and it isn't.
