KNLY 91.1 FM

Does anyone have information on KNLY 91.1 FM in The Woodlands? They are posting job openings on Indeed, but no other board. They say they can't pay salaries at this time, but are offering talent an opportunity to sell on a commission only basis.

Not a Woodlands station - CoL is New Waverly, and the transmitter is somewhere near Coldspring. Signal does not reach The Woodlands, the 60dBu contour ends north of Willis...

I always laugh when I see a no salary, commission only sales job advertised in radio. The good salespeople are ones you can't afford. A diamond in the rough will give it a good shot if they make a living wage as a base salary. Who on earth would accept a job with no paycheck? Sure I have worked commission only but was given an existing active account list that gave me a base I could live on and they paid mileage or had gas trades and auto repair trades. To not advertise positions on radio oriented sites means you'll likely not find anyone who understands radio, much less underwriting rules.

KNLY is reportedly doing a rather unusual format and serves a very small population area.

Good rule of thumb: if you want a salesperson for commission only, ownership must go out and find the merchants that will buy consistently so they can hire someone and give them an account list that can cover their expenses, at least barely. To manage a salesperson you really need to understand sales and what their day is like.

You can get a weak KNLY in the Woodlands, but it is not a signal that any normal person would pay attention to, and is squeezed between KTSU and KPVU. I don't see any way this is a viable operation in its current form. The owners are probably out of their minds, but I guess denial isn't just a river in Egypt, and delusia isn't just a region of Spain.

The last time I heard KNLY it was playing EDM, pop & country. Interesting mix of music.

I'd have to agree on the music mix. Folks might like several styles of music but rarely do they like very diverse music styles mixed. I wish these folks the best but it seems they have much to learn, sadly the hard way.

I agree. While you may find individual listeners who use all of those different formats, they go to each one as a mood choice, and don't generally want the other styles mixed with it.

In the past, a lot of testing was done when listeners "seemed" to like certain out-of-format songs. Indeed, they liked the songs but "not here". They did not expect them on the particular format, and were not even in the mood to hear them when they listened.

I was driving up to Corrigan earlier yesterday and gave KNLY a listen - definitely a trainwreck. The segues were rather bizarre - Mexican Banda to pop country to opera to classic metal. Not to mention the "underwriting" that was really advertisements on a NCE station... and multiple liners positioning them as "the only radio station in The Woodlands".

What a joke...

The KNLY studio is on Grogans Mill Rd. in The Woodlands which is nowhere near the transmitter in the middle of Sam Houston National Forest between Huntsville and Lake Livingston. The licensee, Northwood Hispanic Community Center, has a puzzling construction permit to reduce power by half while tweaking the directional contour:

KNLY has been on the air for several years, so someone must give money to the cause. The station has a website at “radiotheboss.com” so maybe that’s where most of the listeners contribute.

Finally a resolution for KNLY. It looks like a jury trial for fraud and forgery has been set for October. Case is on Harris County District Clerk website. 201837760

This station awhile ago had sent me a message on Facebook asking if I wanted free renascence festival tickets. I had heard them promoting it on the station so I said sure. I went to the studios at the time they told me and nobody was there. I sent a message and waited for probably like 20 minutes before I left. They still never sent me another message about that.

Who's in trouble? KNLY? Can't pull the document up right now.

Ironically, the NW corner of The Woodlands has an old settlement named Egypt. The creek that feeds Lake Woodlands is just south of the town.

The studio probably has a good view of the Nile with the Woodlands Waterway through the township business district and the lake to the west.

Apparently KNLY spews just horrible noise on 91.1... What even is this? LMAO

I've had many sellers on commission only or commission and a travel allowance. But that only worked with a very highly rated station where the seller was given an active account list which pretty much guaranteed an income of $100 to $150 a year on sales of $1.5 to $2 million annually.

That is not going to happen at KNLY.
