Shakira is a Colombian of Lebanese heritage on her father's side. Her dance movements have Arab influences and have been part of her public performances ever since her first big hit back over 25 years ago ("Estoy Aqui"). Her official theme song for the 2010 World Cup had similar dance routines and was played everywhere in the world that has soccer as a sport.
And I'll bet Michael Jackson did not do his signature dance movements when he was recording his hits. And Garth Brooks does not record songs while sliding down ramps and running several miles during the session as he does in a stage show, either.
Oh, and Shakira has performed for even bigger crowds than the Superbowl many times... I forget the exact number who saw her at the 2010 World Cup kick-off, but it was in the hundreds of millions.
I think that some of the observations about Shakira and Jennifer Lopez come from residual Puritanical views; I found the half-time show absolutely amazing, with great choreography and, of course, the obligatory SuperBowl fireworks. It was several times better than the show last year, which was pretty dull and un-exciting.
Does Shakira typically badly lipsync in her non-Superbowl concerts?

Cultural differences. All a matter of perception. Mexico still has bullfights. Cockfighting is legal in Puerto Rico, but nowhere in the 50 states. I can understand our "puritan" sensibilities causing outrage over those, but a Colombian dancing at a sporting event? Why?

Have you ever seen the marching bands from Grambling or Southern University?
They are fantastic. They would put on a heckuva show.
Gee, to me there was not much difference between the two main artist's appearance of that show and the June Taylor Dancers on the Jackie Gleason show in the 50's or or the Radio City Rockettes. Well, there was one difference... they were better, and one of them is one of the ten best-selling record artists in history.
With "American" meaning more than Northwestern Europeans today, this was a magnificent display of the cultural fusion that has formed the country for several centuries.
That doesn’t make it the right fit for the Super Bowl.
And not a female family member or acquaintance of mine has expressed anything but admiration for their performance. No one muttering about a striptease. No pearl-clutching “but what about the children” a la Helen Lovejoy. And none of them of Hispanic descent or particularly devoted fans of J-Lo or Shakira. Just impressed.
In New Orleans, but not in Miami. The Superdome would practically be a home field for Southern's band.
and remember that the “pole dancing” employed by Jennifer comes from her recent movie... and the pole is ultra-common in exercising today.
So a simulated sex display IS appropriate for a football game?
Are men charging into each other violently and suffering injuries, perhaps permanent brain damage, appropriate for programming containing a song-and-dance act?
This was an American sport which was taking place in America (although some might disagree) and it deserved to adhere to basic family entertainment as a large part of the audience was undoubtedly under 18 years of age. Those performers attract kids, especially underage girls, and their raw display was well outside that which we usually call family entertainment. Nobody better at lowering the bar than Fox.
Like bull fighting and cockfighting (which is animal cruelty by any measure), outlawed here for a reason. This is not Spain nor is it Puerto Rico and dogs are not food as they are elsewhere in the world. Use of the word "puritan" is a major disservice to those of us who vehemently oppose animal cruelty and the sexual exploitation of women. I spent four years in the navy. I know all the words and have seen much more than the average adult male yet this, to me, is a disgusting display of all the things we, as a culture, should abhor. It is not entertainment any more than the woman and donkey shows of Tijuana. It is nothing more than titillation.
You are going WAY out on a limb to compare that halftime show with the June Taylor dancers or the Rockettes. Both of these shows displayed summitry and kaleidoscope-type images as central points of their dances. I do not recall a single instance of butt shaking in either group. Neither did those dances attempt to simulate six moves on stage. There is no comparison.
Which has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation. No one, to my knowledge, is criticizing a singer here (although the audio was so low I could not tell whether they were singing or not - and really didn't care).
IMHO this was an ugly, vulgar display which belongs in the adult clubs of Las Vegas and not part of broadcast TV. There is good reason America doesn't look like Brazil et al.
Pole dancing is part of very popular aerobic excerciseprograms among younger generations today. If I tried it I would probably be hospitalized, but it is used extensively with Millennials and even Gen Xerox.
The club at my housing area has had poles for exercise since the built a new facility a few years ago... and this area is about 99% non-Hispanic white.
You are objecting to something only very old non-ethnic find objectionable because they are unaware of how the concept has changed.

Of course, Brazil is a totally different culture from New York (J-lo) or Spain (where Shakira lives now). It does not even have a common language.
Let's take America back to her northwest European roots for Super Bowl LV and have a halftime salute to Beethoven, whose 250th birthday is this coming December! You think this guy's band might be available?

She did not lip sync as far as I could tell. I have seen her many times in concert since 1995; she is absolutely amazingly skilled.
