KROI' New Morning Show

That is an interesting move. The show survived it's host and still is a major player in Dallas/Fort Worth. I would say it might mean an uptick for KROI regardless of the less than stellar signal. Given the many marketing tactics used that accent an independent feel of Texans, this Texas morning show might be just what is needed. It sure isn't a bad decision.

As I mentioned in the ratings thread, this probably ends any chance of a format flip on 92.1, at least for another two or three years. Guess those wanting something new will wait to see if Salem is really going to unload KNTH and KKHT, triggering flips on those stations. I don’t see anything else changing in the near future, other than the usual churn on the various translators and brokered outlets. It appears Houston radio has reached a point of stasis.

Probably should remind that the Kraddick show previously aired here (on KHMX) but lasted less than two years before getting the ax. But that was when it’s namesake was still alive.

Few folks spent time listening to KROI before this change, and I suspect the station's ratings will continue to remain in the toilet.

Why listen to KROI when one can listen to Mix 96.5 or KRBE instead?

Urban One has difficulty programming any format outside of its wheelhouse, it seems. I'm stunned they have not sold this station to a Christian broadcaster by now.

You might have caught in the case of EMF's latest major market purchase (WAAF), the local programming team was planning a complete relaunch of the station, until corporate made the decision to sell the station when the right offer came by. Those in programming might not have complete transparency on Urban One's plans for 92.1; in the meantime, the Kraddick show at least gives more of a draw to 92.1 Mornings than does running a Spotify playlist loaded with ads.

From the nitpicky file, has 92.1 ever run HD? In my car, I get detailed output from all HD stations with the station's logo, current song, current artist, the occasional promo, and such. 92.1 does not run HD and seems to show LAWBOSS and nothing more on the RDS when I scan past. Not blaming their ratings on not running HD, but the visual output looks just sloppy compared to most other Houston stations -- and thinking about 92.1's competition, especially the appearance of an app like Spotify or Pandora.

Wouldn't really matter to anyone, not very many people get the concept of HD radio, nor know how to utilize it. If KROI is running HD, their signal isn't strong enough for it to get out far for many to recieve it

KROI ran HD when it was Gospel. Locked in great where I live in Mo City, and cleared the multipath I get from them now. They turned off the HD when they flipped it to mono as News 92 and they've never turned the HD back on after that.

I agree that the concept isn't well known, but I'm not talking about adding HD-2 channels. Thinking purely in terms of the user experience -- when I tune to 104.1 KRBE, I get the station logo, the currently playing song, the artist, the occasional ad or promo, the name of the host/show on-air. When I use Spotify, I get the song, artist, and cover art. When I turn to KROI, I get "92.1 - LAWBOSS". Especially when this station isn't very well marketed or known, turning on the HD could do a better job of getting its name out there.

RDS take care of that issue. My guess is there are more radios out there with RDS than there are with HD anyways.

You talk about "the user experience," and it's my understanding that the HD Radio channel allows more visual content in the RDS, similar to what you describe with Spotify.

Indeed. With RDS, you're typically looking at a few words of text -- hence, "LAWBOSS". Here's an example of what in-car HD looks like on a newer receiver: https://www.radioworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/fca_1_grand_cherokee_digital_fm_wiht_CMYK.jpg.

By no means do I have 92.1's magic bullet here, but being as they're going after a younger tech-friendly audience, and they're paying for the HD licensing... why not turn it on? Even 97.1 is running HD.

I don't believe they're paying for it (or at least they shouldn't be). The rules and rates have changed a bit since launch, so maybe someone can give us the actual costs run down. Iirc, there was a percentage involved for the subchannels.

Well, don't they have a CP to move a bit closer to Houston (more power for less height)? Seems redundant to turn it on if you're supposed to move soon.

No excuse for any commercial station in a top 10 market to not run HD.

Their RDS has been broken for a while, "LAWBOSS" has been the only thing displayed for weeks. The other Urban One stations are indeed running HD, and sending proper RDS data when I turned HD off on the radio in my car.

To the best of my knowledge, KROI is the only commercial station in the Houston market NOT running HD.
