San Diego Signal Scofflaws

Decades ago, long before 1030 was on the air from B. C., the original CP for 1040 in San Diego was for 10 kW directional daytime, but that station was never built.

Tomás, I'm not certain that ever made it to a CP. I found a notice in the June 29, 1964 Broadcasting dismissing an application by a Marvin Bodruf as part of a long list being dismissed due to being proposed for Class I-A frequencies that were "inconsistent with the clear channel decision". And that was for 1kW directional, daytime-only, not 10.

There were a ton of these dismissed all over the country at the same time, and I found nothing to indicate the Bodruf application was ever reconsidered or refiled, so I am inclined to think "not".

Yes, that's right, 3 years and no end in sight. It's an automated jukebox that I've been told is Jaime Bonilla's own personal collection of music with the only ads being for a money exchange business he owns.
I'm in Los Angeles County, beyond the reach of XHPRS-FM's 105.7 signal. Have really enjoyed it when visiting San Diego County. Does anyone know of an online link for where to stream the station? When it was MAX-FM there was a listen online option, but I have not found one for "Willy FM".

I believe the stream ended shortly after the LMA with Bonilla did ... at least, that's what appears to be the case. My guess is that Bonilla doesn't want the expense of providing one, given the lack of revenue.

Yes, I have one. And there's been a definite drop in 760 AM's nighttime signal strength at my location south of the towers.
I have noticed this as well up here in Carlsbad and Oceanside. AM 760’s nighttime signal is prone to fading at night up here which used to never happen. It’s been this way for several months now. Also, I noticed that when I travel back home to Phoenix, AM 760 KGB is now a semi-reliable night-time DX catch in Phoenix whereas before that would never happen with their directional night-time signal. So I would agree - something is wrong with the transmitter as I Heart Radio is not switching to their 50,000 watt night-time pattern and is instead keeping it on their 5,000 watt non-directional pattern 24/7. Only explanation for the night-time signal conditions I and others have experienced recently with KGB.

Updates: KLSD-AM's repeater is finally carrying audio (after months of a dead carrier). And 1040 KURS is apparently back to its nighttime flea power.

If this is true it would be a violation of their license.

Update: looks like AM 760 is back to 50kw nights. Signal strength has returned to former level. However, now the Mightier 1090 signal has been lower. I think someone mentioned in another thread a tower collapsed in Rosarito. Maybe that's the cause? Can anyone confirm?

Indeed 760 is back. 1090 is definitely weaker, they sound as if they might be simply operating non-directional (off of just one tower) so there is no gain to the north.

They are apparently running off the two standing towers, and have a wider pattern rather than the two very narrow lobes to the NNW and SSE.

What caused the tower to collapse? A week ago, we had rain storms roll in over a 3 day period. It was windy,, but we've had worse. Copper theft? Vandalism?

KNSN 1240 Has a stronger signal on the same tower and is very weak in the daytime up in Oceanside.
1240 is basically nonexistent in North County. The real-world signal has always seemed worse than the contour maps. I have a hard time believing there are many listeners north of La Jolla/Del Mar.

Towers are not made of copper, and neither are guy wires. A tower falls due to wind, undetected deterioration, vandalism, a truck hitting a guy wire or one of a variety of other things.

There probably would be co-channel from San Bernardino anyway
KEZY in San Bernardino's 0.5 mV/m does not even get near Temecula. The 0.5 of KNSN gets to Fallbrook and San Clemente... the 0.2 mV/m gets to Oceanside and Escondido... barely.

I think those cities or numbers might be reversed. Regardless, KEZY and KNSN do not have any meaningful overlap. And the KNSN signal is not good north of La Jolla in my listening and basically non-existent in North County in multiple locations I have tried to hear it, including around Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Vista, etc. on a good car radio.

It's even worse than the contour maps show.

No, KEZY is in San Bernardino and KNSN is in San Diego.

It's even worse than the contour maps show.
And the simplified contour maps at Radio-Locator show the only actual signal overlap is indeed in Temecula, out in fringe coverage area:

So it would be even scarier to see Longley-Rice maps of them.
