what happened to W292DV-FM 106.3?

Translator W292DV 106.3 has been off the air for months. It last broadcast WVOX 1460 AM. An odd choice for a NYC translator given the potential formats.
WVOX is still on WVIP-HD3.
Wondering what happened to this translator which covered a good amount of Manhattan, Queens and northern Brooklyn.

W292DV FM Coverage Map

I last got that translator in late March inside Queens, NY playing music on 106.3. But when I went to The Bronx, I heard 106.3 from Mount Kisco, NY instead. Not sure why the translator is offline...

That coverage map is inaccurate. It’s not on the Empire State Building anymore due to interference complaints from WKMK in NJ in 2012. I remember when that translator launched, I could hear it as far as Edison, interfering with Thunder 106.3. They reduced power but because the ESB is so high, it still interfered, so it was ordered to shut down. At the time, Thunder 106.3 was the only country station listenable in the NYC area so they did have listeners in Manhattan who listened through the static. One of the complaints was from someone who listened from his office at the Empire State Building.
Because of the interference complaints, it reduced the value of the translator significantly. If it signed on now, it probably wouldn’t get as many complaints because most country listeners would listen to 94.7. But the past complaints would preclude it moving back to the Empire State Building, and definitely not to the World Trade Center which is 3 miles closer to Eatontown.

The translator has been broadcasting for years since initial complaints from primarily WKMK itself. It has only been off recently. Nothing to do with WKMK. My question is why the translator is no longer broadcasting. No mention on WVIP site.

I saw this CP for WVIP on 101.5. I'm not sure how this would go with NJ 101.5
It ain’t going to work. NJ 101.5 covers Bergen, Hudson, Essex and Union counties extensively despite the weak signal. You hear traffic reports for the bridges and tunnels every 15 minutes. They will get the translator shut down.
WPDH will also have something to say about its signal in Westchester county.
They're better off just serving Brooklyn and Queens. Stay out of Westchester and NJ.

Only a piece of Union gets a protected 60 dbu from WKXW. In the rest of the areas you name, there is no required protection.

However, if the licensee of WKXW cares about those areas, they can try to find listeners who will state that they listen to the station and want to continue listening. If the FCC gets the new requirement number of complaints, they can prevent the CP from being licensed.

Again, I defer to Scott Fybush for further clarification.

Agreed, I think plenty of people in the NJ suburbs of NYC have this station on a preset because it's the only station focused on NJ issues. Haven't seen the numbers but I'll bet the station's audience goes beyond David Eduardo's usual 65dB signal strength standard because of its unique content.

The proposed translator would wipe it out and listeners would not be happy. And honestly no one in NYC is served by these stupid translators airing brokered and religious programming with signals that won't last through your commute. All they do is jam the already overcrowded radio dial with unwelcome noise.

Because WKXW is a class B, it's protected from incoming interference all the way to its 54 dBu, which encompasses all of Union and decent chunks of Hudson and Essex counties as well.

As you correctly note, Townsquare could, if it chose, go through the somewhat complex process of filing a complaint about incoming interference anywhere in WKXW's 45 dBu contour, which goes all the way into Manhattan. But it's not an easy process, and the number of complaints needed depends on the total population the primary station covers, which is a substantial number for a station like WKXW that operates in a densely-populated area. Each complaint needs its own interference calculations and maps to be drawn up. Whether it's worth the trouble or not is a decision only Townsquare can make.

According to the FCC database, the translator owner's request for it to remain silent for 180 days has been granted. The application cited a need to find a new location for it, due to a lease not being renewed.
STA Request

We'd be getting close to the 180 days. Not that it's big news but seems like they've yet to find a new site since they're still off the air

Moved to 107.9 FM now own by Mediaco. WBLS HD2. Both silent now
New call letters are W300EI. And it’s good to know that the translator is silent again. They recently resumed operations to reset the clock because they were silent for 11 months.

They’ve had a history of being silent 11 months out of the year with an STA and being silent without an STA

They must have a plan..
